My DH wasn’t big on birthdays - the DDs gave up trying to get him interested in mine years ago. They maintained he was able bodied and more than able to buy a card, etc - but he never did, although we always went out for dinner on or around both of our birthdays.
When I was 60, the DDs organised a lunch for me at a local place (Bistro 21, now closed down). I thought it was just the 3 of us, until I saw my friend’s car outside and realised it wasn’t. There were 12 of us, in a private room - it was lovely and DH picked up the bill.
His fishing syndicate fees were always due around his birthday, so he considered paying those from joint funds his birthday gift. He was kind and generous and really didn’t care what I spent - within reason.

(22 Posts)It’s a very long time since I had a husband but he wasn’t known for his generosity. I remember one stand out present..a kitchen clock 😂

We usually have lunch with friends to celebrate. I give my husband a few options for presents as he is hopeless at present buying.
I have been known to print out a page with style and size circled, and leave it on his desk. Last time was for my lovely sheepskin house boots from Celtic, but that was one Christmas, not a birthday.
Saved him traipsing round the town, racking his brains!

Both of us long ago decided to sort our own! Nothing fancy.
Both of us aren’t big on birthdays. But my OH is the kindest person you could meet. He did surprise me one Valentine’s Day.
I got home from work and there was a brand new car with a giant red ribbon tied round it 🥰
!!!
No chance of me getting that!
How lovely for you! Unforgettable.
My birthday is 5 days before my husband's, so we always go out somewhere in-between both days, for a meal with the family. We don't buy each other presents, but get things from our sons and GC

We got married on my birthday so we usually go away for a few days. My DH has tried to make me the centre of attention in the past but I don’t appreciate that and never have. I do not like surprise parties either I just like a nice intimate meal of my own choice.
This is me too.
My husband is keen to spoil me and always sorts out/buys/makes totally unnecessary things for me. Perfume, fancy scarves, meals out, bakes special treats...
I do like a quiet meal out with him though.
Somewhere special.
He apparently booked this year's restaurant last year.
He is very loving and I know how lucky I am. ❤️
I would very happy with a nice wine and a cuddle in front of a decent film on my own sofa!

We are not big on birthday celebrations, although they are recognized. DH usually reminds me well in advance to go and buy myself something nice! Which of course I do...
Actually I just had my birthday when I was sick last week, so did not celebrate at all. My son and grandkids dropped by just yesterday with a small houseplant and a pomegranate! Odd choice, but we had fun and made a mess with it.
I am still recovering, but DH and I will go out for either dinner or lunch soon.
Some of my milestone birthdays have been recognized with jewelry which is precious to me. He is kind and thoughtful.
I've never paid much attention to birthdays and it wouldn't bother me if it went unnoticed. MrA is the opposite and likes to make as much fuss as I allow, which isn't much. We sometimes go to the theatre or for dinner - next year it's Shen Yun again. If MrA is lucky I may remember to get him a card 😐
Not much of a fuss here at all, but dh will buy me a present. Even if I’ve told him I don’t want or need anything there will still be chocs.🙂
For his birthday I nearly always buy him a new jumper - he never buys clothes for himself. He’ll then wear it to death for the whole year, hence the need for a new one.
If we happen to be seeing the Gdcs, for any birthday they love decorating a homemade cake and bringing it in with candles lit, while singing Happy Birthday.
For my last Big birthday I’d firmly said I wanted No Fuss, but dh and dds ignored me, organised a weekend away anyway in a big converted barn with several other family, and I did enjoy (and appreciate) it.

He always asked if there was anything I wanted. I found this difficult as I have expensive tastes and do not like to choose for myself, so showed him cheaper versions and ended up with something that was never used.
When he does put some thought into it I get lovely presents so I have stopped suggesting things. I always get a card some chocolates and a flower arrangement from the florists. We go out as a couple. No surprise parties as both of us would hate them.
I do all the birthday organizing - including my own !!!! My lovely parents did not celebrate their birthdays ( although me and my siblings always had birthday treats and parties) so I am ok about my DH not making an effort!! He does so much more to support and consider me.
When I had a husband, birthdays were barely recognised. I hope he is more generous to his second wife. I have enjoyed my birthdays in the past 37 years! I threw a party for family and friends for my 50th; my family threw one for me on my 70th.
Now I'm the family matriarch, my sons and their AC make a fuss of me . I'm looking at a massive bouquet my DGD gave me when we had a family party on my birthday last Sunday and behind me floating gently up towards the ceiling is the now customary helium balloon. I would have done likewise for either of my dear parents but sadly neither survived their 70s.
I suppose I just like some evidence of his having thought about it. It's obviously wearing off! He did once give me a huge present, something I'd always wanted but never thought I could have. That was years ago though.

My old boy swings from one extreme to the other in the gift department, either absolutely spot on or spectacularly wrong. Only ever organised a party once, for my 60th, as as I said I’d like one. I took nothing to do with it, well apart from suggesting someone to cater, another to make a cake and who I’d like to be there…. ! —
— It was a very happy occasion and I loved every minute of it!

At the beginning lots of surprises, trips away including New York, jewellery, etc. , now I buy myself something and DH gives me the money (or I put it on one of the joint CC’s)
My DH would never have the imagination to organise a party, but once organised a trip to Prague for a special birthday.
He is however very generous with gifts and usually gets it right!
I hate being the centre of attention so often arrange to go away for my birthday but then I get upset if I'm at home and people don't make an effort 😂😂 I'm never happy.
What do other Grans' DHs do for their birthdays? DD's DH pushes the boat out and gives her large presents and parties etc. My DH might give me a box of chocs but that's about it. Any festivities have to be organised by me.
