Many, many people have been badly affected by Boarding School. Just look up Boarding School Syndrome to see the effects it has on people, especially those so very young when they are sent. It affects their self esteem, ability to maintain relationships, ability to parent and many other things.

Well wasn't I lucky with Paw then?
Happy to say he suffered from no deficiencies in any of those respects.

I never went to boarding school, we went to service schools all over the world until I was 12 (which was actually fine as we were all in the same boat). Then I was sent to 'civilian' schools and it was awful. Three different schools by the time I was 16. No long term friends. Different school systems meant that my syllabus changed, plus teachers and teaching methods changed. Plus some truly awful, horrible teachers, something I had never experienced before. I was constantly trying to make new friends and get involved with new groups in and out of school as well as catching up with school work. Despite wanting to go to Uni I left as soon as I was 16.

The man I was engaged to before I met MrA was a public school boy, as were most of his friends and colleagues. Ex's parents lived in the Far East so he and his sister boarded (would have been through the 60s-70s). They joked about school days, and went back to the school for special occasions, and many of their friends were old school friends. They certainly weren't miserable all the time, not were they abused. Most were married or in long term relationships and all the ones I met seemed very nice and stable. No different from any other group of men I knew really. Well, maybe a bit more polite than most.

People have such different experiences in life it's very difficult to generalise.

I spent seven years as a housemaster’s wife in a boys’ public school and vowed not to send my own children away. The majority seemed to cope well enough, and for service and diplomatic children it gave a continuity to their education which was important, but truly a supportive home and a good enough school will serve most children best, especially the less confident and assertive one of either sex.

I was sent to boarding school at 6. My father and grandfather died within months of each other when I was 5. My mother decided I would be better out of the way while she turned our house into a nursing home. I wanted to go but it was not what I had expected. The nun in charge of the juniors was a horrible person, very cruel. I wet my bed and had to take them Dow to the Laundry and wash them myself. It was announced in assembly too! When I caught measles the nun would not let me cough-I remember going down the bed under the covers to cough! In the morning she put me into a hot bath and scrubbed me all over! Much more but that’s enough. Boarding school is not the right thing for young children. Parents are needed to protect them.

I went to a school like that when I was eight. The cruelty extended to the day pupils as well. It wasn’t just meted out to the boarders. My parents took me out of it as soon as they realised.

Years later I boarded for a short time at a lovely school in Yorkshire. I had been a day pupil for a term so had settled in nicely. My friends were still day pupils but that didn’t matter. I had friends in both camps. I didn’t stay long because my father’s posting changed and I was off to a grammar school in Buckinghamshire.

I believe it really does depend on the individual school and not the overall system but if I child is unhappy in any school they should be taken out and not left to suffer.

I have never watched This Morning, but, promted by this thread I switched on the programme to see Sarah Ferguson. That was at 10.15am. No sign of SF. I stuck it out for a couple of minutes, but it was like listening to a gaggle of geese, so I used the off switch. I will not be bothering again.

I think we have similar dislikes when it comes to tv programmes DrWatson.
