cataracts and varifocals

Do they try to correct as well as remove the cataract?

I don't know anything about it but am sure others will.

I wore multi focals before cataract op. I hve one useless eye so depend on just my good eye Since op i need just cheap readers for reading, and computer, otherwise no specs at all. Its wonderfu!

I have distance lenses in my eyes now and wear cheap glasses for reading and close work. (Three pairs of quite smart glasses for £7. Couldn't believe it after years if very expensive ones)

DH had cataracts operated on and still has to wear varifocals even though we paid extra (Private hospital) for lenses that we were told would mean he wouldn’t need glasses at all. If you have macular degeneration the chances are that you will still need glasses. A cataract is like a film over the eye. They grow slowly so you don’t realise that gradually the amount of light reaching your eye is lessening. That’s why people find they need sunglasses for a few days after the op while their eyes get used to the brightness. Or, as DH husband said after the op, I didn’t realise the pattern on the new wallpaper was so bright! If you don’t have cataracts operated on you will eventually lose your sight. Given your condition, you need to take the advice of the team who are going to operate on you.

I have always had short sight and astigmatism.

When I had my cataracts removed I opted for distance lenses so that I would be able to drive without glasses if I broke them.

I already knew that I would still need glasses for reading and because of my high level of astigmatism, which cannot be corrected with cataract surgery. So I now wear varifocals which correct the astigmatism and allow me to read.

I have always worn glasses and was quite happy for that to continue.
