Does Anyone Remember Clackers?

Does anyone remember the toy called Clackers which were popular in the early 70s? I seem to recall there was a bit of a craze on them. I had a set and was really good at them but the balls used to drop and whack you hard on the wrist if you didn't keep the momentum going. One girl at our high school broke her wrist using them and after that they were banned from the playground. Such fun days 🤣🤣🤣

OH yes. I remember bashing my hands silly with them. Also remember some getting tangled around a telephone wire above the road after a friend let go on a rather overenthusiastic up thrust.

I remember arriving by boat to an idyllic little Greek island only to be spoiled by the sound of the Clackers.

I absolutely loved them. Played with them every spare minute - when I wasn't pogo-ing! - then suddenly they disappeared. Thrown away without even a conversation, because someone, somewhere in the world had reputedly lost an eye while playing with them!
Think I moved onto Jacks after that. Much safer for the eyes!

Yes clackers were a thing at our school- probably got banned in the end- cant remember! And then we all got the ball/ankle skip jump thngy.😆

I was just telling my granddaughters about these yesterday. What a coincidence!

Hi don't post very often but always read the comments from you lovely ladies. Mine were orange and had a lot of bruised fingers I remember 😀

JdotJ Sun 26-Nov-23 12:14:01

My knuckles still remember Clackers, unfortunately

Silvertwigs Sun 26-Nov-23 12:15:34

I had a set in 1963!

Yes, they were barred at my secondary school haha

Had them too, and there was an indent in the bottom of the balls where the string was knotted. I made the string shorter and it made it much easier, and could play with them for hours.

But I knew them as ‘ker-nockers.’ Many bruised wrists and hands and had them til they fell down the drain in the street while playing with them. shock

We also had ‘French skipping.’ A round of elastic that went round two peoples ankles, calves, knees or thighs. You had to jump in/out of the elastics without treading on it.

1,2,3,4 out in on out twist off… 🫣😂

The other thing we had was a tennis ball in a stocking! Played it standing with your back to the wall, and swung it so it hit to the left/right of you or above your head, or below your torso (between your knees) I don’t remember the song to that though.

And street skipping. Many a time the Mums in the street would turn a giant skipping rope for 10 or more kids at a time, so we could all jump rope together. They even got involved and had a skip themselves, while all of us kids looked on in awe!

We lived in a cul de sac so everyone knew each other, and there was always someone to play with. We was also on a hill, and before skateboards, we used to get our yearly Christmas Annual and balance it on just one old metal rollerskate. We’d sit on it, knees bent up and feet flat on the book, and zoom down the hill, where we’d wear out our shoes or plimsoles by using them as brakes.

Happy memories right there… smile

Great post .Yes but we called them kerrrknockers😁

Oh, Yes!!! I had an aqua pair. So much fun!!! I also remember having a ring and ball toy that was attached to a string. You would put the ring around your ankle, swing the ball, and jump over it with your other foot. I can't remember what it was called.

AskAlice Sun 26-Nov-23 13:18:53

Oh, the tennis ball in the stocking! There was a big wall at the end of our road and several of us would stand suitably spaced along it bashing the ball to and fro against the wall beside us. My mum got fed up with having her stockings pinched to play this game - they soon wore out into holes with the roughness of the wall!

Dizzyribs Sun 26-Nov-23 16:43:44

Just reading the name makes the back of my hand tense in anticipation of the inevitable bruising 🤣 I loved them!

essjay Sun 26-Nov-23 17:43:45

had a red pair, struggled to master them but carried on despite the bruised wrists

sunglow12 Sun 26-Nov-23 18:09:17

I used to tie my hair with what seemed a mini version of clackers - 2 little plastic balls on elastic - haven’t seen them for years - moved on to invisibobbles now .

Stewpot100 Sun 26-Nov-23 18:30:16

Oh yes, I had a yellow pair. Does anyone remember playing 'Two Balls?' This involved juggling with two soft tennis sized balls up against the school wall and singing some sort of rhymes whilst doing so.

HillyN Sun 26-Nov-23 18:32:24

I had yellow ones in 1963. They weren't the plastic-framed ones with a handle that are sold now; they were two balls on cord with a plastic ring in the middle that you put your middle finger through, so they didn't often hit your wrist. I played with them while the craze lasted, to be replaced by the tennis ball in a stocking in 1964, and jacks in 1965- my first year at secondary school. I recall sitting on the low wall around the tennis courts. It had paving slabs on the top and we played jacks on that.

Mojack26 Sun 26-Nov-23 18:46:22

Yes! 😅🤣

poochwool Sun 26-Nov-23 19:22:13

I still have my set of clackers smile

Granmarderby10 Sun 26-Nov-23 20:06:44

Still got some yellow clackers somewhere- they were always being confiscated in primary school.
The “Skipomatic” - I think 🤔 had one of those too
Two of the great playground crazes of the 70s
Never got a. Chopper though …or any bike🥲 had to make do with a scooter and some roller skates.

tictacnana Sun 26-Nov-23 20:29:14

When I was a very young teacher, these were all the rage but soon banned due to injuries. One of the parents confided to a colleague of mine what she used the clackers for. The colleague told me . I didn’t really understand how this worked - still don’t , not sure if I want to know.

BlueNile57 Sun 26-Nov-23 22:11:48

I've still got mine!

GrammaTaylor Sun 26-Nov-23 23:02:51

Loved them 😁
