Campbells Condensed Soup missing from the shelves

Has anybody else been unable to buy these soups. I tried 5 major supermarkets yesterday and none of them were stocking them any more . I am baffled. I have been using them for some very successful recipes all my married life. I cannot imagine that they have gone out of business. It is SO annoying.

Yes, I too have managed to find the lovely brand in the bargain stores. I've committed the awful crime of stockpiling a few as I fear the writing may be on the wall.

Perhaps soup cans aren't healthy and being withdrawn?

We just saute chopped mushrooms, a bit of onion and garlic, add coconut milk, cornflour to desired thickness, salt and pepper - done.

I had this problem years ago when they did away with Homepride tinned sauces.
We had always had Sweet and sour pork for Saturday evening dinner, the jars of sweet and sour just don’t taste the same.

Kittycat Sun 10-Dec-23 14:50:12

And no cooking my own doesn’t either!

I can get Heinz soup here in Portugal. Small tins too. I’ve not seen condensed soup for years.

I've been puzzling about this too. Campbell's tomato soup has always been a great winter standby here. Hope the new one will be as good.

I make an Italian Cottage pie with the condensed tomato soup, haven't been able to find any for a while...

Lin663 Sun 10-Dec-23 15:45:50

Apparently people are also hoarding them as they think the tins will be worth money in future

Vintagegirl Sun 10-Dec-23 16:16:55

I wonder are tins becoming out of fashion in favour of more expensive pouches of soup?

I think of them as "older person" soups - how interesting that is the demographic! My parents bought them fairly often I think to use in things.

The only person I know who buys them regularly is my mother-in-law who is 99. I occasionally (maybe once a year) buy the mushroom as a lazy base for pasta - but my children don't buy any of them.

I think you’re right, Mum used to buy them when we were kids, she’s 81 now and hasn’t bought them in years, I know as I organise a lot of her food shopping. I thought they had disappeared along with other things like canned cream.

Cant see how changing name from Campbells to Batchelors will make a sales difference🤔

I’d guess because Campbells are American and Batchelors are British.

We had a Campbelle’s factory near here and we went on a factory tour. We were really impressed when we saw what went into the tins. No UPF there I don’t think.

I think of tinned soup as 'old person' food as well - never could work out how many many tins to use for our family size.

I agree. Our children don't use tins either.

i used to buy chunky tinned soups with meat, for a disabled person.
they were v useful, and reasonable price in lidl.
they have not been available for months, and i've looked in other shops too.
the only soup there is lots of is tomato, presumably it is a standby of students.
and is the one my neighbour doesn't like. sigh.

I used an Ainsley Harriet cup a soup- wild mushroom- in a chicken pie last night. Worked well.
Often do make my own sauce from onion, celery, carrot, mushroom, flour, butter - add a dollop of cream or cream cheese at the end.

Margs

Would vegetarian gravy granules perhaps be a reasonable substitute? You could make it up as thick as you wish - as thick as condensed soup?

Wouldn't that be very salty if made so thick?

Greyduster Mon 11-Dec-23 08:16:28

These are a staple in my store cupboard, especially the tomato and the mushroom, to use in cooking - I don’t eat tinned soup ordinarily, and I haven’t been able to get them lately either. They’re missing from Morrisons shelves and DD can’t find them for me either. A neighbour told me that B&M have them so I’ll stock up if they have. I thought they had already changed the brand from Campbells to Batchelors. The ones I have in my larder are Batchelors and have been for a while.

No problem here in South Yorkshire. I stocked up on chicken and mushroom varieties at the weekend

Bonnybanko Mon 11-Dec-23 08:44:07

Ham stock cubes always seem to be in short supply I’ll try get some today they’re great for lentil soup

JackyB Mon 11-Dec-23 08:50:35

How I would love to be able to buy a tin of condensed chicken or mushroom soup. They are just not a "thing" in Germany and haven't been since I moved here in the 1970s. Sachets of powdered soup mix are very popular, though. A whole aisle is always devoted to them, even in the smallest supermarket .

NotSpaghetti Mon 11-Dec-23 09:01:05

That's really interesting Jacky - I wonder why they are so big there?

Sago Mon 11-Dec-23 09:21:30

Below are the chicken soup ingredients, why on earth would anyone use this for a casserole, pasta dish etc?
Surely it’s healthier a cheaper to make the recipes from scratch.

Water, Rapeseed Oil, Modified Maize Starch, Chicken (4%), Wheat Flour (contains Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Thiamin, Niacin), Milk Proteins, Salt, Double Cream (Milk), Dried Chicken Stock, Flavourings, Autolysed Yeast, Yeast Extract, Potato Starch, Spices, Sage Extract, Garlic Extract, Onion Oil.

M0nica Mon 11-Dec-23 10:53:34

Actually there is little there that isn't in the average kitchen

Water Rapseed oil, cornflour, chicken vitamin enhanced wheat flour, milk, cream, chicken stock cube salt & pepper, marmite, potatoes spices. sage, garlic.

Autolysed years and oinion oil are the only things not in my larder, and they have a very small presence.

I do not use this product often, just for two specific recipes and the tin of soup is a heck of a lot faster than to make a sauce incorportating all these ingredients.

NotSpaghetti Mon 11-Dec-23 11:06:00

Autolysed years aren't in my kitchen cupboard either M0nica grin but I think my yeast flakes are probably autolysed - and isn't that what's in most yeast extract pastes (Marmite/Vegemite etc)? I think they are all "self-digested"?
I don't have onion oil either...
And as a vegetarian, no chicken!

I suppose onion oil can be bought or made....
