Matching pyjamas by whole family.

Opinions may vary 😀

Shattering or even devastating are only expressions I would attribute to really horrific events such as those being played out around the world, or a personal tragedy.

I don't think the thread is meant to be taken too seriously. Most of the comments are observational and subjective I imagine we all have our foibles and personal dislikes, particularly when it's driven along by social media. It's not a big deal just a discussion point and reflecting on attitudes of a bygone era, exemplified by Nancy Mitford's writings highlights how attitudes are often generational and in her case of a certain demographic.

Alright “shattered” was a bit silly, pathetic even.
But it did express my thoughts on such snobby attitudes.

calling absolutely everybody LOVELY.. and those huge bows that poor babies have to endure on their heads

The dresses the female stars wear at premiers and award ceremonies.

I wonder how people would react if the male stars/celebrities turned up at these shows wearing next to nothing, but an apron so tiny it barely covered their tackle, or trousers with the buttocks completely cut away.

Then look at pictures of people at serious events. The DM today has a picture of 5 young women, all giggling and posing like my 16 year old granddaughter and all beautifully dressed in exquisite evening dresses.

Houses lit up worse than Blackpool illuminations at Christmas. Blow up Santas.

Just wondering where the words 'settee' and 'serviette' came from and why Nancy Mitford should have regarded them with such horror that it persists for decades... grin

I was thinking of her You and Non You list too. - Perfume, toilet, mirror, sweet and radio etc etc.

Tatler produced a new list in 2019. Included in the Non U list are Jacob Rees - Mogg and France (except Paris).

Add white stillettos to GSM's list and I'm reminded of dozens of girls getting off the train at Liverpool whilst we were waiting for that same train to take us back to Suffolk at midnight.

I have to agree with you, annsixty and I can't help wondering how many grans, reading some ot these posts, have been mortally offended!
Just used one of my pet hates; over-use of exclamation marks!!

I agree with NanKate and BlueBell - I'm not to keen on matching pyjamas and jumpers for the
family plus dog especially on the annual Christmas card with the round robin .

My mother once bought us matching jumpers .
I had to drive miles away to donate them to a charity shop as my teenage daughters went berserk .
And she saw them , but thought that it was a coincidence !

Everything that GSM said, and particularly (combining two of her choices) brides whose arms and backs covered in tattoos!

Settee was originally a settle. Something like a wooden Church pew but with a high back. Rich people would have elaborately carved ones, poorer people's would be plainer.
I suppose as upholstered seating developed the word persisted but changed slightly.

People who say, ‘Oh! 100%’ (usually twice) just because they happen to agree with you. 🤔

I hate it when people say 110% or any number which is not 100! it doesn't make sense!

When in my twenties I made matching dresses for myself and 2 toddler daughters plus a tie for my husband! What was I thinking?? The fabric was a cheap job lot, but we only wore them together once!

NotSpaghetti Sat 16-Dec-23 11:10:26

Naff to me is lacking style or maybe "vulgar" - many things mentioned above such as phrases aren't exactly vulgar (though I find them a bit glib).
I think naff is usually something to me. It's often tacky.
Thinking here of joke cushion covers and aprons, mini-me stuffed toys, joke salt and pepper sets, electric photo frames that constantly scroll and yes to.... decorated wheelie bins and elf on a shelf.

Cleavages
Fat spilling out of tops
Long nails
Slug eyebrows
Trout pouts
Visible tattoos
Makeup put on with trowel
Toilet
Hubby
Fur baby
Rainbow bridge
Off the shoulder wedding dresses
Short skirts on chubby legs
Vaping
Chewing gum

I could go on …

Driving home from a Carol concert the other night I passed a house with an enormous blow up dinosaur in the front garden!

There was a recent mumsnet thread about a blow up dinosaur... What goes through people's heads? 😂

TerriBull Sat 16-Dec-23 10:54:28

Much of what has been said. Famous people who have to send birthday greetings to offspring, which should be personal and then litter it with meaningless nonsense such as "you are an amazing, exceptional person" yeah right they've done what exactly? other than exist, anyway more often than not the child is right next to them so just tell them that, without putting it out there just boastful. The acronym LOL usually after something that isn't remotely funny.

Similarly people who pose with their kids, all in pj's at Xmas in an expensive home, every mod con, but not a book in sight. I was just thinking the other day when Keeley Hawes posed with a lovely newly acquired dog from Battersea, her and Matthew McFadden never do that with their offspring, plenty more like them, usually big names too. Good taste and class is never about money!

Serviette is a towel in France. It's napkin according to Nancy Never mind she's long gonegrin

Enhanced buttocks. Who needs those? Definitely not me.

So agree with that. It’s ridiculous. And WHY?

Redhead56 Sat 16-Dec-23 10:43:11

What’s wrong with wearing antlers I wear them while drinking Cava on Christmas Day🥂

People using the expression “Making memories”.

Loath that expression, you can't choose your memories, some stick others fade
and 'my bad' too american

MaizieD Sat 16-Dec-23 10:35:15

Oh, and constant reference in media stories to friends and relatives as 'loved ones'. Who knows. some might be absolutely loathed..
