I just saw a headline about Anthony Armstrong Jones and his regular affairs. It said he had a secret 'love child' while married to Princess Margaret.

All three of my children were 'love children' but I was married to their father i.e. my husband. I really dislike the accepted idea of a 'love child' as the product of an illicit affair. What does that say about the child or children conceived and born within the marriage?

Do you have word of phrase you dislike?

Oh yes BlueBelle, WE are pregnant. Ghastly phrase. 😡

I hate that one as well, and "In the family way." What family what way, where, how`````?

"Devastated!"
Such an exceedingly over-used word - frequently applied to pretty trivial grievances ie: getting a parking ticket, missing a bus, an apprentice hairdresser making a bit of a dog's dinner of your hair etc, etc, etc.

Another favourite pet hate used by elderly women is "She had it all taken away'" usually followed by a knowing look.

Gutted.

My grandmother always said that in hushed tones.
I was sitting next to an old lady in the waiting room at the vets a long time ago. She told me that her dog had had a tumour, then, in very hushed tones, the vet had to take everything away.

Stunning
As in she looks stunning, or just ''Stunning''

NotTooOld Sun 17-Dec-23 21:35:47

'I just can't wait'.........for Christmas, to see your new baby, to eat vegan sausages etc etc. This is something children might say, not adults. Grow up for goodness sake.

Agree about 'stunning' and 'amazing' and 'fur babies' - yuk.

'Fighting cancer' is horrible. It gives the impression that if some poor soul dies of cancer they have not tried hard enough to stay alive. Should be banned.

Flowersinthegarden Sun 17-Dec-23 21:47:35

I know right. When I hear adults 50+ use it it makes me cringe!

LovesBach Sun 17-Dec-23 21:48:29

'Iconic' - used for everything, it seems.

I always picture the late Les Dawson standing at the wall with his friend Cissie saying or mouthing "She had it all taken away",
my DH's gran did it a lot and he aggravated her by asking what had been taken.

Legend, they rarely are.
Hero, they rarely are either.
Loved Ones instead of family and friends.
Forever Home, it rarely will be.
Reaching Out.

NotTooOld Sun 17-Dec-23 22:36:07

Ooh yes, agree with all those Oreo.

I am enjoying this topic.

Agreeing with almost everyone!

GSM mentioned "gutted" and I thought of its inevitable corollary... "I'm in bits"

To which I want to reply, "well pull yourself together then".

Hubby and fur babies, especially when written.
The over use of devastated.
Passed away etc instead of dying.

Margs Mon 18-Dec-23 04:59:24

Oh yes - Hubby or My Hubby.
It reduces the poor man to the status of a favourite Chihuahua or one of those ghastly Toby jugs.

lizzypopbottle Mon 18-Dec-23 08:59:20

But Baggs, my children were, all three, love children. My legal husband and I loved each other. Our children were created by that love. So I do find the term 'love child' offensive.

Baggs Mon 18-Dec-23 09:03:47

Mine are too, Lizzy. My comment wasn't meant to be that heavy 🙂

I still think most of them are social WD40 and, because of that, don't mind them.

Baggs Mon 18-Dec-23 09:04:30

I find it interesting how their usage often changes with the generations too.

Folk/folks
Out and about
All and sundry
Hustle and bustle
Passed away
Simmer down
Down there (referring to one’s genital area)

I associate all these with older people such as my Grandparents.
