Anyone just watched Mr Bates v the Post Office? *GNHQ tweaked the title*

So sad watching this. My lovely local Post Office closed down because of it. It was owned by a lovely family and their son was accused of theft as he was the postmaster. He went to prison for 18 months. His mum told customers it was the new Horizon system but rumours spread that he was a thief. Nobody would use their little corner shop anymore and people were racist against them as they were an Asian family. He was the nicest, most efficient postmaster and was super fast with serving you. So very sad they lost their home and business.

I worked with a lady @ 2008 whose husband was ruined in this way by the Post Office. Lost their money, home, livelihood, his health.
He had a stroke and she was working into her 70s all the hours she could in a shop. To pay the bills and repay debts. She told us all about it and how their good name was ruined too.
Had been quite wealthy prior to sinking their assets into buying a shop with a Post Office.

There is a petition to have Paula Vennells stripped of CBE which you can sign
Also you can contact your MP to show you care
She is now employed by NHS !!!
It is time we stood up for good
Those people who believed the PO and treated them as criminals please now you know how misguided you were support them

I’ve watched all of it. Heartbreaking.

Signed and shared. Thanks for the link.

Take the Vennells woman to task ..take away her CBE . She acted disgracefully, as did her side-kick ( can't recall her name)
So sad for hardworking postmasters and postmistresses.
I was hooked on the series ,watching a couple of episodes a night on ITVX.

Soozikinzi Thu 04-Jan-24 13:00:52

I already knew alot about this case mainly from listening to radio 2 who have covered it alot . It is an absolute disgrace that these law abiding post masters weren't believed at the time . Paula Vennells should definitely be made to pay back the 400000 and return the CBE. It's such a truly shocking example of these kind of jumped up authority figures being believed over the honest humble shopkeepers .

Thanks for the link to the petition to strip Paula Vennells of her CBE, Maggiemaybe. I've just signed. I've been watching, getting more and more angry, as so many of us have.

I knew a little of this scandal before, but not all of the details. What a brilliantly made and shocking series. I agree that post office bosses should be prosecuted for the deliberate and prolonged lying and cover-up as well as their malicious hounding of post masters/mistresses when they knew the real problem lay with the horizon program.

I also think that some of those at Fujitsu who must have known about the issues, (indeed they kept trying to fix known bugs) should be prosecuted.

I hope the increased public awareness of the innocence of all those victims is now going to bring a little comfort.

I didn't watch it but it's a story I have been following closely for a long time. Absolutely dreadful, these people have suffered so much, been branded as criminals. ostracised, lost their homes and/or savings, their reputations and even their liberty while for much of the time the PO knew the problem was the computer system but they CHOSE to deliberately hide that fact and let others suffer such life changing events. IMO it's time for severe penalties and speedier reparations to those vilified.

Autumnrose my thoughts exactly. Why did nobody in the Post Office join up the dots and investigate why suddenly, following a new IT system, previously honest, law abiding postmasters had taken to defrauding the system. I'm no expert but even I can make the connection.
I am beyond anger at the dreadful way these people have been treated and what they have lost due to the corrupt "powers that be".
I have signed the petition to remove Paula Vennell's CBE - what I would really like to see removed is her freedom.

We have watched it all & it was heartbreaking. How do the Post Office bigwigs sleep at night, especially Paula Vennells, a woman of the cloth. It beggars belief that this has been allowed to drag on for so long with these poor people who have lost their livelihoods, homes & reputations still not being paid compensation & exonerated.

I hope anyone who has a Post Office Savings account now puts their money elsewhere.

There is also a petition on Change.org which is asking for "Post Office Scandal Compensation & Accountability," which can be found here. chng.it/jgSrZpcsM9

Apart from the stripping of titles, etc, I do think we should be ensuring that the cases of people who pleaded guilty because they were so bullied should be looked at again so that they receive the compensation they deserve.

vintage1950 Thu 04-Jan-24 12:12:37

Isn't the cover-up perverting the cause of justice?

vintage1950 Thu 04-Jan-24 12:10:42

Why isn't the Post Office stripped of its ability to investigate without involving the police?

2507C0 Thu 04-Jan-24 12:10:37

It's unbelievable that she has not voluntarily handed back her honours award, let alone used her "golden handshake " to pay towards those who lost everything.

Let’s not forget, also that this scandal is costing us as taxpayers millions and millions.

Autumnrose Thu 04-Jan-24 11:57:13

The greatest miscarriage of justice in British legal history. I have been following events closely for some time and have never understood why not one person could see that for hundreds if not thousands of postmasters to suddenly become dishonest was by any standards of rational thought, an impossibility. And also if they were suspected of stealing such large sons of money that no attempt was made to investigate what they had done with this money.
The public enquiry is ongoing and due to report sometime this year. I hope and believe that following its conclusion there will be criminal prosecutions both in relation to the Post Office and Fujitsu. In the meantime I have of course signed petition regarding Paula Vennells.

jennymolly Thu 04-Jan-24 11:48:47

My heart broke watching this in one sitting. Those two women àt the Post Office should be prosecuted and the book thrown at them. To hear that the Vennells woman was an ordained CofE priest is unbelievable and just shows the utter hypocrisy of these vile, dishonest people.

Lizzie44 Thu 04-Jan-24 11:46:37

Excellent programme. Watching it with feelings of anger and heartbreak. If I had been watching it as a fictional drama I would have doubted the credibility of it, but as we know it was true and a scandal unlike any other in our time.

Below I have cut and pasted information from Nick Wallis's website:

Hello, my name is Nick Wallis. I am a freelance journalist. This website is designed to be a hub for my activity reporting the Post Office Horizon Scandal. Most of the work I have done on this story is crowdfunded. The crowdfunding pays for the journalism on this website. Occasionally I get lucky and someone pays me to do a bit of broadcast or newspaper journalism, which I am always grateful for.

I have presented, produced and consulted on three BBC Panoramas about the Post Office scandal. I have written about it for Private Eye (with the genius that is Richard Brooks) and presented a BBC Radio 4 series on the subject called The Great Post Office Trial (produced by the genius that is Bob Nicholson). I have also written a book called The Great Post Office Scandal, which you can buy here or from Amazon, here. Most recently, I was series consultant on the ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office.

If you want to stay on top of what is happening with the scandal and are able to make a small (or large) donation, you will be added to the ‘secret’ email – an irregular and sometimes irreverent newsletter which will give you the inside track on what is happening around this story. There are now many hundreds of subscribers to the secret email, which started in 2018, just before the first trial in the Bates v Post Office High Court litigation. My work on that case can be found here.

If you are not in a financial position to make a donation or buy a book, do not worry – please treat this website as a free and open resource.

I couldn’t believe how many years those poor people had to wait for the truth to come out. Just ordinary, honest people trying to make a living for their families.

Cossy Thu 04-Jan-24 11:26:05

We ended up binge watching and it was utterly devastating. The “real” Mr Bates was on the radio earlier in the week and he and the MP who supported him are truly remarkable men. There’s also a 1 hour documentary on ITVX.
