Anyone just watched Mr Bates v the Post Office? *GNHQ tweaked the title*

So sad watching this. My lovely local Post Office closed down because of it. It was owned by a lovely family and their son was accused of theft as he was the postmaster. He went to prison for 18 months. His mum told customers it was the new Horizon system but rumours spread that he was a thief. Nobody would use their little corner shop anymore and people were racist against them as they were an Asian family. He was the nicest, most efficient postmaster and was super fast with serving you. So very sad they lost their home and business.

There is a petition you can sign to have Paula Vennels CBE taken off her, I’ve done it already. I found it on Gov.UK

At least you can check your account whenever you want to So not waiting for a statement to arrive.

There is a public inquiry. It started in 2020 and it is ongoing. Anyone who could be bothered to search for it could have found it really easily, as I did. It was the very first item on the page of links that I posted on page 1 of this thread.

www.postofficehorizoninquiry.org.uk/

It is a very interesting read, though time consuming, I've been looking at some of the witness sessions and opening submissions.

While I understand that Vennells behaved disgracefully I think it rather hard that she is the only one getting the real hate from the public. The prosecutions started before she was made CEO. One hopes that the CEO in place when they started is also to be questioned at the Inquiry. There are also many other Post Office and Fujitsu employees implicated.

Fujitsu currently has several very lucrative government contracts and continues to run Horizon for the Post Office...

Have just been sent this …

I just signed the petition calling on Paula Vennells, the former CEO of the Post Office to be stripped of her CBE. Will you sign too? you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/strip-paula-vennells-of-her-cbe?bucket=mailing_43897&source=whatsapp-share-button&utm_campaign=blast43897&utm_medium=socialshare&utm_source=whatsapp&share=beb3ae4e-5f25-4d08-bec2-494c2ae44f16

That horrible woman, Paula Vennells should be prosecuted.

I was absolutely dumbfounded when I read that she got £400,000 bonus and a CBE and she was a priest.

Apparently, she resigned her post in the end.

I just hope she has a conscience.

I feel like strangling her. I am so angry at her behaviour.

I don't think Vennalls deliberately cheated anyone out of the money which those desperate people paid to the Post Office for their non-existent debts.
She was just too thick, too intransigent, too obstructive to believe for one moment that the Horizon computer system was less than robust and believed that all those sub-postmasters were thieves.
She certainly is not fit to be an Anglican priest.

Fujitsu needs investigating for criminal activity too.

Petition signed and shared to Facebook. Thanks for the link Maggiemaybe.

For Auntieflo, as you say "What IT testing"?? There IS an enquiry, and Vennells is booked to be there, the TV news that reported that y'day (as a result of the series) pointed out that the enquiry venue is right next to a Post Office!

Any of Newsnight's fast receding viewer numbers might have seen a LibDem woman tapdancing frantically away from pointed questions re their present leader (SIR Ed Davey now) and his flat refusal to meet the blighted postmaster/mistress corps when he was (in the coalition Govt) THE Minister responsible for the PO! He HAS released a statement about how he's terribly sorry, and that he was grossly misled by PO 'officials'. Ho-ho, backtrack, shuffle, swerve, avoid, deny, etc! [NB That isn't having a pop at LibDems especially, ANY politico, any badge, would be doing the same frantic routine to try and evade all the issues!].

My Dad worked for the company that became part of Fujitsu from WWII until its take over by Fujitsu when he took early retirement. As a result I have an interest in and belong to ex employers fb group.
The vast majority are disgusted by the way the PO Sub post masters were treated.
I've also noticed PO Life Insurance adverts on fb have promoted huge responses, angry faces and posts of support and sympathy.

Adam Crozier:

Chairman of Whitbread (2018–present)
Chairman of BT Group (2021–present)

🤔

I can only assume he has more hours in the day than the rest of us to give both organisations his full focus.

Adam Crozier was CEO from 2003-2010.

Daisydaisydaisy Thu 04-Jan-24 16:35:23

Hi
Yes I watched it too ….blooming awful !!!🥲

Kamiso Thu 04-Jan-24 16:20:57

Vennells should be made to pay back the money she earned so dishonestly along with the so called golden handshake. Perhaps it would stir up empathy with those people she so easily scammed and cheated.

She should definitely be prosecuted and sentenced to a term of imprisonment like her victims. The Japanese company should also be held to account and current contracts cancelled.

Amalegra Thu 04-Jan-24 16:00:46

Disgusting and shameful that the Post Office and their managers/executives have never been properly held to account for this dreadful miscarriage of justice. So many lives ruined and even lost because of it. Compensation has STILL not been paid out correctly. And the former chief executive daring to masquerade as a C of E priest without admitting to any wrongdoing whatsoever-such utter hypocrisy! Am surprised and disappointed this ‘revered’ institution would have her in such circumstances-NOT a good look, is it? Just makes me even more wary of our ‘powers that be’; I don’t trust any of them these days. Corruption everywhere!

Thanks Calli my mistake. So a CBE - even higher for Vennells. Seems failure just gets promoted as they say.

And truly socking about Angela vd Bogerd.

How DO these snakes sleep at night?
And Vennells in the Church hierarchy?

Sheesh.

Gwenisgreat Thu 04-Jan-24 15:36:52

The Post Offices attitude is unforgivable

Callistemon21 Thu 04-Jan-24 15:34:56

I like the fact that when Mr. Bates was offered an OBE for all his hard work in campaigning, he turned it down “while Paula Vennells keeps her MBE.”

A man of great principle. I admire him very much.

She got a CBE.

Angela van den Bogerd, played by Katherine Kelly, continued to be promoted within the Post Office and was found to have misled the judge under oath during the subsequent enquiry.

She then went on to a top job with the Welsh Football Association. She has since left.

How do these liars go from one top job to another?
It seems to happen all the time, not just in these instances.

Yes I have seen lots of mentions of Crozier and am unsure why he seems to be escaping the public wrath.

Adam crozier did the job up to 2010 before Paula venells took over but his part in this hasn’t come up so far.
He then went onto ITV as cEO but left.
Interesting given it’s itv who are now showing the series

Hmmm very interesting.

I dislike the way Paula Vennells kept saying the Horizon system was "robust". To me, that isn't the same as saying it was infallible. She was either very naive or lying through her teeth. I'm sure around the same period (2000), Air Traffic Control software broke down with dire consequences, so all new systems at this time were suffering glitches. Most were investigated and swiftly dealt with. So why didn't Vennells walk into the job as a new broom and be the one to unearth all the mistakes? She would have gained far more respect, instead of hiding everything, horrible lady.

TerriBull Thu 04-Jan-24 14:37:38

I think the reason why this series has fired up emotions, the public has a sense of decency and cannot bear the thought of the sheer injustice of what has happened to, honest people merely trying to earn a living. If we have to have this bloody elite presiding over us, they could at least be honest and worthy of their ill -gotten gains, so often they're not. They fail upwards, moving on to other lucrative positions. There is a ground swell of feelings as the numbers signing the petition would suggest but ultimately will it achieve the desired objective? we can only hope.

The small proportion of those who were compensated, it seems having to declare themselves bankrupt their monies were clawed back and The Revenue were on their case once they knew they had received compensation, which I imagine wasn't that much anyway. I'd like to see some of those culpable for the anguish they suffered stripped of their own assets. Sheer dishonesty and duplicity lay at the heart of what the PO and the Horizon computer system inflicted on the sub post office staff.

155,000+ have now signed the Vennells petition 👍🏼
