Male foibles - The Ick?

Before anyone jumps on me for passive aggressive bullying, this is intended to be a light hearted thread.

Two years ago I told my granddaughters that as a teenager I refused to go out with a boy after I’d heard him call Coca Cola, fizzy pop!! 😮😂 I thought him deeply uncool.

They shrieked with laughter and said he’d obviously given me ‘the ICK.’ I’d never heard this expression before (along with many others) and the dictionary definition says it’s something that causes disgust. Well, I wouldn’t go that far! 😂

Last week I had lunch with a group of friends and sat opposite a man I didn’t know. I didn’t mind that he talked at length about his past career, many qualifications, years of service etc., etc., I can zone out when that happens but it was when he cut up his naan bread with a knife and fork and dipped each dainty little square in the sauce that I thought Eeeek! Or should that be ICK?? 🤣🤣🤣

So, what gives you the Ick? Of course it’s not always men- I hasten to add!

One chap turned up to take me out and he was driving one of those three wheeled Robin cars - that was definitely an ick for me!

Juggernaut, you must be unusual (or just stunningly gorgeous) never to have been dumped.
At the time, I was in shock at being dumped. But even then, it sort of felt like a rite of passage.
He dumped me because he'd met a girl "who would".

My Mum's friend had a daughter who was quite choosy, her Mum used to say ' She'll walk around the middens until she falls into one!'

The term 'Ick' is brilliant & describes the feeling so well - wish I'd known it before.

I had a boyfriend in my teenage years, but it didn't work out.
Years later I bumped into him again when we were in our 30s and both single.
We went on a few dates, but I told him the relationship had run it's course and I didn't see a future for us after he arrived to pick me up one evening in a faux sheepskin jacket!
It was dark brown and just put me right off him (again).
There and then, his horrible jacket gave me 'the ick'!

Whatever gave you the impression I wasn’t choosy

I had a really nice boyfriend who was a farmer. We were at his parents farm just before we were due to go out for the evening. I was all dolled up backcombed hair, mini dress navy with lime green trim and stilettos. I heard a commotion outside and when he checked the cows had got out ! So he asked me to help get the cattle back in the field. Can you imagine the dung covered yard yuk ! Sadly that was the end for me.

I heard some years later he had become a publican. I wouldn’t have liked that life either.

Crumbs, it’s all coming back now…and this is a bit more than an ick:-
One date gave me a lift home from a dance, never been out with him before (aged 19)
“I know all about women” he said, unzipped himself and said
“Let’s put this where it belongs”
Er no..

He had such a way with words!! 🤣🤣🤣

Some real funnies on here.

Another guy I went out with was a cherished only child. He was at Uni but very spoiled by his parents. They bought him a brand new Triumph Spitfire and he turned up in the Xmas holidays in a brand new brown leather jacket which was immaculate and not worn in. He was very handsome but he looked like something out of a mens clothes catalogue and all the local lads made fun of him standing in the snow with a polo neck jumper and leather jacket while they all had Levi jackets and scruffy jeans.

Crying laughing at some of these replies 😂😂

Dribbly kissers and really soft mouths. 🤮 Many a relationship has hit the rocks the moment they kissed me. Occasionally I have tried to persevere because they have been lovely people in many other ways but in the end, it just left me cold.
Strangely enough, there were things about my husband I didn't particularly like on other men but 30 years later, I don't even notice them!

In my youth I was going out with this really good looking boy, he seemed perfect until he tripped and said stone the crows
I seemed to pick up on it every time he said it and it really iked me bye bye to him

Could have been much worse …

Sasta Mon 08-Jan-24 18:05:05

Giving myself the ick with my typos 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sasta Mon 08-Jan-24 18:00:31

JustkeepswimmingDonna

I think it's called ghosting now

I think ‘ghosting’ is meaner than just finishing with somebody properly, you don’t tell them you’ve had enough of them, you just cut them off and ensure they have no way of getting hold of you, eg, blocking their phone number; seems tester nasty.

Sasta Mon 08-Jan-24 17:50:06

My experience of getting the ick, full on, was when a date tried to kiss me at the cinema and stuck his cold wet tongue in my mouth. I gagged and almost got sick. I was 16, he was 18 and I clearly rememberer him saying ‘most girls like that’ 🤢.

Gargling
Not heard that one apart from bubbling water in throat
Please explain. Or am I naive

Nowt wrong with being particular Gwyllt. Or avoiding bad boys.

Nicolenet Mon 08-Jan-24 17:42:35

That's called gargling!

Gwyllt Mon 08-Jan-24 17:35:49

Juggernaut.
So happy for you
If so picky you don’t know what you might have missed
Bad boys could be such fun. Not always about the long game

MissInterpreted Mon 08-Jan-24 16:45:44

The one thing which would definitely give me the 'ick' and be an absolute dealbreaker would be smoking. He could be the most wonderful, gorgeous man in the world, but the minute I found out he smoked, that would be it.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 08-Jan-24 16:34:13

Being too keen - wanting to ‘go steady’ as we called it back then after just one date. Claustrophobic.

Aldom Mon 08-Jan-24 16:31:12

LauraNorderr

Aged fifteen, first date, he held my hand , I felt lumpy things, he had warts, gave me the ick.
Luckily not enough to dump him. Warts went away soon after, he never did.

A lovely story LauraNorder. smile

Juggernaut Mon 08-Jan-24 16:17:23

@Gwyllt,
I'm happy to say I was never, ever dumped, I split up with one boy by mutual agreement halfway through a first date, but apart from that, I was always the 'dumper' never the 'dumpee'!
I was very 'picky' about who I went out with, and by the end of the first date with my husband, I knew he was the one!
He may not have realised it at the time, but he was never going to escape alive!
Forty one years later, I think he's accepted his fate wink
