don't have a problem with under 16's having free bus travel,BUT
Katie Hopkins as been quite rightly castigated after a viscous rant about Kate Garraway.
I do however feel that KG did parade her husband during his battle with Covid, it felt too intrusive to watch in an ICU bed intubated and hooked up to all kinds of support.
I’m sure he was not in a position to give his consent.
His recovery and return home was also put in the public domain, in my opinion it was too much.
There are apparently books and documentaries too.
I have never watched anything KG has presented or appeared in, I only know her as Derek Drapers wife, for which she now more famous for.
Should she have allowed Derek the dignity that Michael Schumacher has been allowed, his family have shown such love, care and respect, or was KG right to use her late husband to promote awareness?

Would your husband have hated it if it had given him more time with his wife and children?
I am also glad that Sago (the OP) has raised this.
I agree with everything in the post. I thought it was just me who felt negatively towards the way KG paraded her husband and his illness.
Monica
Yes I understand that, and maybe the whole family were happy with the exposure, but I only know my husband would have hated it, and would have found it deeply humiliating, as would I.
It’s not really a criticism of Kate, she has been in a heartbreaking situation, and has obviously done what she felt was best.
Cossy

Out of interest do those people that think it was wrong of Kate to use her husband to promote awareness of long covid also think the publicity that Rob Burrow is getting for motor neurone disease wrong also? Or the lovely lady who garnered so much publicity for bowel cancer? Can anyone explain if there is a difference and, if so what is it.
IMO no difference whatsoever.
A huge difference!
Rob Burrows and Dame Deborah James are fully aware and in complete control of their actions.
When KG first started her campaign DD was not in a position to give consent.
Only those on life support should say when it should cease ?
It's to do with consent cossy, I havent followed the Rob Burrow case but certainly Deborah James was able to provide consent. It's an issue for those of us who work with or know people where we are almost 'guessing' consent.
IMO, sorry to say it, but I think Katie Hopkins is utterly vile and publicity seeking

Sara1954 when you deeply care and love someone there are very few lengths that you will not go to when they are in an extreme situation and utterly dependent on you for survival.
I mentioned that KG needed to fund huge expenses for the care of her husband Monica.
For this reason alone I would not condemn her, but in any case, what the whole family have endured indicates to me that they deserve compassion not condemnation.
Walk a mile in my shoes……
I haven’t seen the Katie Hopkins rant, or any of the Kate Garraway programs.
But I can’t imagine anyone would want their private suffering put on public display.
To me it seems they made a situation which was already horrible, into something much worse, poor man became famous for being ill.
Katie Hopkins is indeed a vile woman, but sometimes there is a grain of truth in her rants.
has no one considered what caring for her husband at home has cost Kate Garraway.
It was reported last week that it was costing many £ thousands a week to care for him at home plus many thousands of capital costs to adapt the home and equip it and that the care of her DH has left her virtually bankrupt and possibly needing to now sell her house.
When she has been able to work over the last three years, she may well be well paid, but the cost of care for her DH, not to mention the welfare of their 2 children would far outstrip anything she could earn.
yes, some find it uncomfortable, but needs must when the devil drives and she has bravely done everything she could to keep the family on the road and life continuing during a period that would have have broken many of us.
My sympathies are entirely with Kate Garraway.
Derek Draper gave verbal consent during Kate Garraway's first documentary.
I don't think Covid is in the least dignified, Missiseff
There was a BBC Wales documentary filmed at the beginning of the crisis in the ICU at a Welsh hospital; patients were shown, harassed staff filming at their wits' end and dignified was the last word you could attribute to any of it.
I found it very distasteful and undignified. Didn't watch the docu. & won't read her book.
In other news, Katie Hopkins is a vile, toxic excuse for a human being.
I didn’t know anything about what Katie Hopkins had written until this thread, as I’m far away in New Zealand visiting family. I was a bit uncomfortable about the way Kate Garroway promoted her husband at the time, but I assumed she was doing it to ensure people knew what Covid can do. I didn’t know Kate Garroway before as I’ve never watched her programmes. I now realise that she needed to fund enormous expenses to cover costs for her husband and so there’s another reason why she did it.
I don’t feel any need to condemn her behaviour, I haven’t walked in her shoes.
I wish the family the peace to grieve now in privacy.
I nursed my best friend through cancer I know it’s not the same but not at any point did I think oh I better recorded this. I think it’s a personal thing.
I agree with Maybe70.
I’m agree with GSM comments , I find KH comments distasteful but I also found watching KG very uncomfortable and knowing her political leanings her comments recently I feel have been like a party political broadcast, I hated seeing her husband paraded around when it was obvious he didn’t know what was going on 😪
It's not really about whether I like KG, it's not even about this individual case, it's more about consent and how we as a society deal with the consent of those who may not have capacity to give it.
Kate Garraway is an amazing woman both professionally and as a mother and wife. Derek Draper was lucky to have her.
If you had seen her on GMB, read her books, listened to her compassion you maybe would get a better feel for her.
I've haven't walked in her shoes but if a loved one needed help l would move heaven and earth to get it. She funded treatment in Mexico (twice l think) and after his heart attack paid for him to be flown (medicac) back to UK (l cannot imagine how much that cost). She wanted him to live and recover as much as possible and moved mountains to that end. I cannot imagine how she coped with it all. She's devastated he's died (it's not as someone suggested 'a relief').
She is some woman.
A kind and compassionate post, Annie1
You're right, Derek was no shrinking violet - publicity was his business.
Katie Hopkins goes out of her way to be controversial, she delights in all the negative reactions. I have mixed feelings about Kate Garraway. I understand she had to financially support her family when Derek became unable to do so and explains the documentaries and books. But I did feel for Derek in many ways.
