Katie Hopkins on Kate Garraway.

Katie Hopkins as been quite rightly castigated after a viscous rant about Kate Garraway.

I do however feel that KG did parade her husband during his battle with Covid, it felt too intrusive to watch in an ICU bed intubated and hooked up to all kinds of support.

I’m sure he was not in a position to give his consent.

His recovery and return home was also put in the public domain, in my opinion it was too much.
There are apparently books and documentaries too.

I have never watched anything KG has presented or appeared in, I only know her as Derek Drapers wife, for which she now more famous for.

Should she have allowed Derek the dignity that Michael Schumacher has been allowed, his family have shown such love, care and respect, or was KG right to use her late husband to promote awareness?

'shown', my apologies.

So, if he was unable to give consent during the filming of the first days etc, but on recovery, saw the footage and agreed to it being show. Is that morally legally giving consent?

Indeed a forum where people will express their views that may be different to yours.

I have 30 years experience of working with people who have difficulties expressing consent. My guess is I have more experience than you on this issue oldfrill. Your own bias on people expressing a different view shines through.

I trump you on 30 years, but hey it's a forum not a competition.

I think you raise an important issue Galaxy. I too have professional and personal experience of issues to do with capacity and I have felt uneasy about Kate Garraway’s documentaries showing her husband at a time when he could not have given consent.

I hope Oldfrill is right and he did give consent before the first documentary was aired but it is not clear how his consent was obtained or who assessed his capacity to do so. I think any responsible television company has a duty to make this clear at the very beginning of the documentary.

It is not enough to say that Kate Garraway knew him well enough to know his wishes, or that she acted in his best interests, or that the documentary has done a lot to raise awareness. The fact is that she did not have lasting power of attorney and therefore had no right to make decisions on Derek’s behalf (she spoke about the difficulties this posed). There is a Mental Capacity Act for a good reason, long overdue, and this sets out legal safeguards which have to be observed.

Consent may not be continuing consent.

OldFrill Fri 19-Jan-24 17:38:23

Kate started filming Derek as the doctors could see improvements which she, for whatever reason, didn't see. So she filmed to compare how he was progressing. These were for her own use. I don't think he would have objected to this, but doubtless others will throw their opinions forth.
Later, when she was going to make the documentary which he was able to understand he consented, and she aired this in the documentary
Those are the details
But when did many on Gransnet bother to base their opinions on more than their own unfounded bias and not check the details (or in many cases watched the documentaries etc).
Derek Draper desperately wanted to improve and live. It was because of the publicity that the American expert knew about him and offered to help him.
The OP is written to suggest that consent was not given. It's wrong.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 19-Jan-24 16:41:24

Nor do I - and he couldn’t possibly have known how his condition would develop. He changed from being a very sick man in hospital to a helpless, doubly incontinent man dependent on others for everything in his own home.

I am not vilifying anyone, I dont mean to sound harsh but I am not particularly interested in KG, I am interested in hiw we as a society judge the capacity to give consent and what we do for those who cant verbally or in other ways give consent.

Derek Draper verbally agreed to the documentaries being made.
So how was he 'paraded' without consent? And his wife is now being vilified!
He verbally consented and it's in the first documentary.

In the early days in hospital I don’t see how he could ever have given consent.

Thank you Judy Our daughters were age 5 and 7 years old ,
thinking back to how I felt then, I don’t think dignity would be
the reason to let him die

Judy54 Fri 19-Jan-24 14:40:35

Thank you for sharing that AnnieBach it puts things into perspective for many who still have their Husband's into old age. There was no opportunity for the two of you to grow old together.

Anniebach Fri 19-Jan-24 13:12:47

I was 33 years old when my husband died, this perhaps helps me not to judge Kate Garraway

I agree 100% with Monica.

These are media people. They have a different perspective to anyone else's point of view. Clearly they do not want to hide away to protect any feelings. They have been brave to not join in with those declaring Covid as something like a cold.
not for everyone it isn't !

Galaxy Fri 19-Jan-24 12:53:20

My husband would want to be kept alive at any costs. I on the other hand would not. Individuals vary greatly on this issue and we are therefore guessing their views if they are unable to give them.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 19-Jan-24 12:48:24

I agree.

Sago Fri 19-Jan-24 12:10:46

Anniebach

Would your husband have hated it if it had given him more time with his wife and children?

For myself and my husband dignity would be a huge issue.
I think that awareness could have been raised and KG could have done what she did without DD having to be paraded like he was.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 19-Jan-24 11:52:45

Thank you.
