Hack for de-icing your car.

We lived in a house that had a very narrow garage one of you had to get out and let the driver reverse in the road was too busy to reverse out. ,The people before us had suspended a ping pong ball from the ceiling which touched the back window to tell you you had reversed enough we adapted it to ours.
We have to put the car away we live among farms and you never know who is looking to steal a quad bike or even a tractor . After having our house completely cleared out while we were at work and having one used after we had just sold it in a bank robbery I think it has made us ultra-careful.

My car is 40 years old and when I went to drive it yesterday had ice on the inside of the windscreen and rear window!
No chance of using deicer without a right old mess, I just had to scrape away carefully, a warmed ziplock bag would have really helped!

(And although I'd love to keep my beloved car in the garage, my big old 1980's car won't fit in my little 1950's garage )

Another with a double garage, so I have made a point of putting the current car away at night.
The last one was too long, because of the cr*p at the back.
It’s on the list to sort out.

Forgot wine rack, wine/beer fridge, fold up table tennis table, I feel the need for a skip🤣

We have a double garage which until recently was home to a full size snooker table, dart board, bikes, ski/snowboarding gear, toboggans and various hobby equipment of five children.

Might get cars in by the end of 2024 🤣🤣🤣

I just lie on the bonnet whilst mine warms up. Stops theft and it's colder than sitting in the car

We had a double garage built when we moved here. Apart from all my husband’s tools 🙄 we both have cars that would be attractive to thieves. Best under lock and key.

Yes, we have a double garage. Must remind DH to have a declutter.

insurance would not be swayed by usualness; they might well say steps were not taken to secure the vehicle from theft.

Not just might say - a newspaper report of a couple of days ago stated definitively would not pay out - be warned

I just start the engine and switch the heaters on whilst I go on spraying the windows and mirrors with de icer. The stuff you can buy in cans in the supermarket. Pretty quick and does the job.

isn't that a bit risky; someone else might nip in and drive it off.

Good idea Shysal. I usually put a cover over my windscreen at night, but I don’t have a cover for the background and that sounds quicker than using the heated rear windscreen.

just put some newspaper under the wiper ?
for the rear screen.
(remember to take it off before driving away)

I’m fortunate to be able to fit the car into the garage. Any bigger, though and it wouldn’t go in. Well, it might go in, but I wouldn’t get out 😂.

😲 I don't know anyone who puts their car in the garage any more, except for some with classic cars!

Well, my Dh does it's got a soft top. If you have a garage why not use it? It's like having a freezer and buying your food daily.
We had a double garage before and we angled the cars in so they fit.DH often had to go to work in the middle of the night and did not have time to scrape it.

We have a fleece-lined glove thing, with a handle inside and a scraper on the end. Works beautifully.

I remember many years ago laboriously scraping the ice from the car windows at 5.30am every morning and my neighbour would stride out and pour a jug of warm water on his and drive off while I was still hard at it.

I was almost tempted but didn’t give in. Then one morning while scraping away I heard a loud crack. It was my neighbour’s windscreen. He stood there in horror holding the jug.

He told me later that while his windscreen was being replaced he was advised that even lukewarm water was a high risk of cracking the glass.

Too much cr4p in my garage for a car as well.
@shysal I've seen this tip too and it seems to work well.

Though I have the luxurious advantage of a heated windscreen 🥰
