The taking of photographs

I have always taken photographs, both with a ‘proper’ SLR camera and a smaller digital one for snaps. I was looking back on some photos I had taken, and they mostly brought back memories of occasions I have enjoyed, and had taken a few photos as reminders.
It seems to me now that so many people don’t enjoy the actual occasions as they are too concerned with getting a photo, as this photo of New Year in Paris illustrates. I was also struck by the people who had stood in the freezing cold to watch the Royal Family going to church at Christmas, only to view them via their phones ( I almost found myself agreeing with Prince Andrew!).
I think it’s a shame that getting a photograph or video, possibly for social media, is now the main thing for a lot of people.

Jings, I am in grumpy old woman mode this morning!

Similar to Daddima’s photo, this highlights the trend.

Well done Mallin That was very brave, and I bet the photographs were beautiful.

James&Jon. Your mentioning live models reminded me of myself aged 20 and expecting a 3rd baby ( I started young)
I was getting to that big as a bus stage when the visiting midwife asked me if I would like to earn a couple of pounds by posing naked for her husbands camera club. “Seeing as your naked when dr examines you anyway” she said. So I did and had a very interesting couple of hours moving my baby bump around for the poses asked. Not exactly sexy ! There were 9 men and 5 women taking photographs and they were all delighted to have a very pregnant subject as they’d waited years to find a very pregnant woman who they could ask without greatly offending.
That was in 1965 . Wonder if any of those photos are still around. I was given 6 of them but they disappeared during a house move many years ago

Me too I take lots of photos every day but try to delete them often the ones I aren’t happy with Will they stay in my phone and cause issues in due course filling up my phone ??

I have nearly 7000 photos on my camera and love looking through them I use one of the monthly free print apps so still have loads and loads of photo albums which the adult grandkids love going through every time they come to visit

I am useless at taking photos, and on the odd occasion that I have tried to video an event, I have done missed out on the 'live' experience and not even had anything worth looking at afterwards.

I remember watching the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games soon after this practice became widespread (cant renember the exact year I first saw it), and was rather taken aback to see the majority of the athletes holding their phones in the air as they paraded around the arena, filming everyone else.
To be honest, I thought it was rather crass, as they were there as participants, not spectators, and it's not like there will be any shortage of official filming of the event that they would be able to watch afterwards, is it!
It was nice to see that a small number of countries had clearly forbidden the practice, as not a single phone was to be seen amongst their athletes, and they looked all the more professional for it - like real Olympic athletes, rather than entrants in something like the Eurovision Song Contest.

I wonder - have actors on stage started to pull out their phones to video their audience during the performance or the the encores yet?

Yes, I know I'm grumpy!

I take all photos with my phone ….really special ones …. like kids/grandkids at Xmas and birthdays…I have printed of and put in old fashioned albums….my daughter and sil will not let family photos anywhere near social media….our photos are precious.?
My granddaughter found my digital camera the other day and I was showing her some vids I’d taken of her as a baby …about 10 years ago …she went wild over them …do I have her the camera . She said she’d have to learn to use such ‘old technology’
Apparently it’s inspired her and she asked for a proper camera for Xmas which her mum obliged her with! Who knows…next David Bailey!,

Daft for me, but I care not what others do apart from being forced to view others' darlings (I then am 'too busy' to sit and look).

As well as family photos I like taking pictures of the sky, especially at sunset or when there are clouds. Also close-ups of garden flowers. I occasionally delete some or resolve to get them printed or saved.

I do think it matters and that it is not good for our 'mental health' to be continually photographing life instead of living it. Personally I rarely want to see anyone else's photos or videos and heave a secret sigh of dread every time a dear friend of mine pokes her phone under my nose! As for fireworks, surely the excitement is in being there. Some people think too much about how to impress on social media - and that also affects 'mental health'!

I take quite a lot of pictures, including many of DGC. I have made albums for each of them with pictures taken when they’ve stayed with us, and all the fun we had. I hope they’ll enjoy looking at them when they’re older.

I love looking through my photos, reliving memories. I make small photobooks of major holidays and family events, I usually have some prints printed using one of the ‘free’ printing sites and they go up in the kitchen and get changed regularly as the grandchildren grow and change so quickly. Then every November I sort through all the photos on my phone and make a yearbook, leaving a couple of pages free for Christmas photos. When that is completed and delivered back to me it is then added to all the others, going back years, on my bookshelf, to be brought out whenever anyone asks..’ where were we when?……or who was with us at?…… or when did we?…….or whenever I just want a session reminiscing over times past.

It can be very annoying, last year in the Orangerie in Paris 2 women (easily my age) were so busy taking photos and blocking other people’s access that I don’t think they appreciated the beauty of the paintings, most people also sit on the benches in the middle to soak up the ambience but not these two they went into another smaller room and did it again! Doesn’t happen so much in London fortunately as most galleries have a no photos policy

Gwenisgreat Sat 20-Jan-24 13:58:29

I remember in a boat off Vancouver Island I was so busy trying to capture a photo of the whales, I never really saw them!!

Buttonjugs Sat 20-Jan-24 13:49:45

It’s so annoying, too. especially at concerts. Struggling to see because people are holding their phones aloft.

Granmarderby10 Sat 20-Jan-24 13:44:47

Not only did I not have a camera when my children were very little but there was no one to take any photos of us together when I did get one🙁I’m sure I was not alone in that though.

I was travelling on a vaporetto in Venice sitting beside a younger woman tourist. She was viewing the photos she had taken in the city. Every one was a selfie of her in front of an iconic Venetian building or view.
However, in all the pics, her face in the foreground almost obscured the scene. The pics could have been taken anywhere in the world!

I’ve always always take tons of photos everywhere and will continue to do so.

Have two cameras and my phone.

Later I whittle them down picking out the best and sometimes use the free photo book service to have hard copies all contained together. It already gives me joy to look at them and I think about how nice it’ll be to look in many many years time (hopefully) smile

Babamaman Sat 20-Jan-24 13:09:25

It is the ‘selfie lip puckering’ generation I don’t understand !
Yes take photos, I should know I have a trunk full (not in albums) but what is the selfie thing?
Just don’t get it

Not sure what you mean about ‘agreeing with Prince Andrew’ but seriously you may need to have a word with yourself if you can agree anything with that particular man . I do however agree about enjoying the moment / I think most people do a mix of both ..

Granmarderby10 Sat 20-Jan-24 12:46:54

I don’t mind what others do with their “ devices” but if I’m in the moment I prefer to watch because my phones’ camera and my skills on it aren’t that good compared to others. So always hope someone else captures it.
It kind of breaks the spell to be fishing the phone out and fumbling with the various settings😙 imo.
Regarding the number of photos taken since it all went digital I confess that I really enjoy people unearthing snaps I haven’t seen before from family and friends. It brings back memories in an instant and sometimes I can’t believe how grandkids have grown and how time does really fly🥹

The storage of photos and other material online means that lots of them will be lost forever when someone dies. While I love looking at old black and white photos of family and my home town this will not be so easy in the future. I have made sure that I can safely pass on passwords, pin numbers etc to my family when I go.

polly123 Sat 20-Jan-24 12:44:35

I have been to concerts where many people are filming and effectively missing the live experience. When I was in the Louvre trying to see a special painting that I had always wanted to see in reality, I found myself behind a large group of phones. All I could see was a sea of light and a solid mass of people taking photographs. What on earth is it all about!

Damdee Sat 20-Jan-24 12:31:57

Years ago, before mobile phones with cameras, a family member pushed to the small space round the font to take photos of a baby's christening. It was not his baby. I thought at the time it was strange and rude, and felt it spoilt the moment of a religious ceremony.

Vintagegirl Sat 20-Jan-24 11:57:50

On the topic of huge collections of photos, I have made small photobooks of certain people and memorable events. They are different from the Albums with miscellaneous topics year by year. Someone on here suggested one for my mother's 100th birthday which I now treasure and enjoyed choosing items for it while careful to avoid deceased family and friends.
