Thanks everyone. A few good ideas there to think about

If he's the "go with the flow" sort of person would he prefer some sort of family event or something just for him?

A weekend or a few days in a big house with family does give him the opportunity of conversations with all the family and you could incorporate a family meal.

Obviously it all depends on the budget as these big houses can be very expensive.

Ps But I'm sure it would be lovely 🙂

I shall watch this thread as DH has a significant birthday this year.

But this one made me laugh:
afternoon tea onboard the Royal Yacht Britannia
I can just hear DH "Well, thanks - that was a bus man's holiday, Calli!"

A very good chef to cook a wonderful meal for your family with the staff to serve and clean up after you.

That's the problemnotspaghetti he's hard to please, well not really. I mean he just goes with flow. He doesn't want a big fuss but would still like to celebrate with the family

Its just that I would like something out of the ordinary for him

....but what would he like?

It's his day after all.

For my DH’s 80th I booked an Airbnb on the coast for our DS and DiL, DD and her DH, 2 DGC and dog. He loved it.

Afternoon tea on the Royal Yacht Brittania in Edinburgh?

flappergirl Wed 24-Jan-24 21:28:42

OP, take a look on a website called brightcare.co.uk (sorry, can't link for some reason). There's quite an interesting range of experiences which are all in Scotland and are all suitable for those less mobile.

Maybe a flight on the sea plane from Loch Lomond? We did this for my DH's 70th and he loved it. 45 minute flight, absolutely stunning views. You could have a nice meal before or after at Cameron House or Duck Bay.

My husband has limited mobility so I dropped him off at the wee jetty and I parked nearby at Cameron House. The crew were very helpful and there was a ramp to access the seaplane. My husband's 88 year old aunt, who uses a wheelchair, also did this flight on her birthday.

Wishing your DH a very happy 80th birthday.

Aveline yes, thank you, I couldn’t remember the name and cooking dinner whilst scrolling GN

The V&A. Dundee?

Norah Wed 24-Jan-24 20:01:02

A car driver service to take him on a day drink tour to the places that make scotch? There are some lovely tasting places.

Fingal is the 5 star floating hotel at Leith. Or why not try an 'Orient Express' afternoon tea at the Queen Charlotte rooms? It's a complete simulation of a trip through Austria apparently. Original fixtures and fittings and visual tricks so you feel you're really travelling.

polomint Wed 24-Jan-24 19:51:39

Thank you. They all sound interesting. I'll look into them

Grandmabatty Wed 24-Jan-24 19:34:37

A trip to Skye and an overnight stay at Three Chimneys? Or The Fairmount in St Andrew's?

We live in scotland so not too keen on travelling or flying to London. Its just that I would like something out of the ordinary for him

I think there is a Pullman train in Scotland that has a service including lunch.

Tom Kitchens restaurant on the outskirts of Edinburgh is excellent, afternoon tea onboard the Royal Yacht Britannia (wheelchair accessible)

We have had drinks and canopies on a ship not far from RYB which is a floating hotel.

If you are close to London the Orient Express has a lovely route and lunch, it’s wheelchair accessible.

Afternoon tea at the Ritz is a nice treat.

There is a wonderful small hotel in Morston, Norfolk with a Michelin starred chef and accessible rooms.

Really depends on your budget, I hope your DH has a wonderful birthday whatever you decide.

BlueBelle Wed 24-Jan-24 18:47:23

Will he want something so luxurious ! They all sound very expensive gifts

Grandmabatty Wed 24-Jan-24 18:33:07

A trip on the Orient Express?

polomint Wed 24-Jan-24 18:32:32

I'm having trouble thinking on a special 80th gift/experience for my husband. The guy says he's got everything! Lucky him! I've looked at lunch on trains, helicopter flights, lunch on a yacht etc etc. He uses a wheelchair or zimmer which does limit certain things. Any ideas would be most welcome
