In Malta it is traditional to have a lemon tree, and we call it 'a doctor in the house', because we use it a lot; natural, squeezed, boiled, candied, salted, pickled.... My friend's sister, who is a nun in Africa, managed to grow trees with seeds she took from here, and I have two tiny seedlings from pips I put in a pot with my cactus.

how do you get lemon rind for cakes if you just buy lemon juice?

I dread biting on one that’s slipped my notice.

Yes, they do get on my pip.!

I always buy unwaxed and if possible organic lemons, I use lots of them not just in drinks but to dress vegetables, salads, with fish etc, etc - and yes there usually lots of pips, shame we don’t have the climate to grow them into trees

It's apple seeds , which contain harmful amounts of cyanide - not lemon pips .
The benefits outweigh any risk of poisoning .
I've been eating them ever since I started on solids .
My friends also eat them .
Brazilian Lemonade is full of them and absolutely delicious .

On the subject of freezing, a friend's son, who is a chef, gave me a bag of frozen bayleaves. They work better than the dried.

I bought some pip free lemons in Asda last week. They were unwaxed as well. Bit expensive but nice.

I was making a lemon sauce the other day there was about 18 pips in one lemon and it was only small. I use lemons and limes for savoury and sweet dishes alot. I like the fresh fruit of both and I eat them too.

Now and then I use lemon zest, too. I just made some oat biscuits (I was craving ‘something nice’ ) and although it’s not in the recipe I always add some zest - it gives them that extra bit of zing.

My daughter freeze fresh lemon slices, and put them in hers straight from the freezer, so no waste.

I do this too, plus orange slices and lime slices.

Just buy lemon juice. For the amount you use it is not worth bothering about how many pips there are in the lemons. I only buy lemons when we have a get together for drinks which is not often, Birthdays and Christmas.

You wouldn’t just put lemon juice in your G&T though, surely? My daughter freeze fresh lemon slices, and put them in hers straight from the freezer, so no waste.

I buy the jars of sliced lemons. No waste.

It’s not a third world problem for me, just merely remarking how many in a slice! I have lemons all the time, use them frequently, bought lemon juice just doesnt do it for me.

I just use the old type of glass lemon squeezer that retains the pips - or most of them.
I use quite a lot of lemons - the juice goes in various dishes, inc. a Thai style fried rice recipe and a spicy rice and lentil soup.

While living for a while in Cyprus ages ago I also got into the habit of squeezing it on certain meats, esp. pork chops. It also makes a big difference to spinach - I was amazed once I tried it.

We have our own lemon tree in the conservatory. The lemons have rather thick rind but very few pips. I haven't bought a lemon for months, so couldn't really say. Perhaps it's the variety they are selling.

Why are there so many pips in lemons nowadays?
Nine in last nights slice for the G&T!
