The Sixties! What are your memories?

I remember working out how to make a telephone kiosk work without putting the money in. Well to be honest that was the 70s. In the 60s in a rural community I remember going on the lorry run round the farms collecting milk churns.

My friends and I worked out how to do that. You had to tap the receiver very quickly to the exact number you wished to dial. It was all a bit pointless really because we knew so few people with a phone.

In the end we tapped out the number for Dial a Disc which was just three digits and I remember listening to Tears of a Clown.

I too lived in a rural area and used to climb on the milk churn stacks.

In 1967 I was still a student, with long summer holidays. My friend studied Italian so we decided to spend the summer hitchhiking the length and breadth of Italy, staying in youth hostels. Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale was being played everywhere.

We were restricted to taking £50 each out of the UK. It didn't matter. My friend was very blonde and the local lads took an interest so we were wined and dined handsomely. My first experience of pizza was from a proper oven in Perugia. It's never tasted the same since.

We were lucky to survive all the hitchhiking unscathed. We only accepted lifts from solo drivers. I sat in the back behind the driver, pondering how I'd throttle him if he grabbed my friend!

I remember how cheap the clothes were compared to nowadays. Old money of course, a pair of red patent leather sling backs 19/11, a red cord mini skirt 5s from C&A, a coat for £5. The latter was dear so it was put on a store card !

Oh so many memories. Going to Radio 1 Club in Regents Street where all the groups played live and all the D.J.s of the time took turns to host the show which was on live at lunch time if I remember correctly. Like others, going to Biba and Laura Ashley and buying a new dress every week as there would always be a party somewhere on a Saturday night so you'd simply HAVE to have a new dress!. You'd bring your own drink - either a bottle of Cinzano or a Party7 - remember those? Playing a stack of records on the Dansette record player on full blast, Jackie magazine - goodness yes, we had the time of our lives totally care free and somehow we always had the money to enjoy ourselves.

Remember hotpants? This was me in the 60s.

I also remember my aunts and mum getting a catalogue where Cilla Black modelled clothes and then they all went to the jumble, bought dresses and fabric and copied them on their sewing machines,

I think the little flowers were white.

I had a similar but plain coat just like that around 1964, worked on an office in central London so would have bought the coat there. I have a photo but it’s a black and white and just can’t remember the colour, weird as I didn’t have many clothes

This isn't me (obviously) but I had his very outfit. It was a dress and coat in fine cord, bottle green and black. I loved it.

What I remember of it as a 10 year old in 1965 was all my family having parties where the grown ups loved dancing the night away while us kids crept downstairs and watched! They all wore mini skirts, boots, Mary Quant black eye liner, the lot. They all seemed so much happier than today.

Ah. I lived in Cambridge, I suspect things might have been different (and our nearest C&A was in London). We had to rely on independent boutiques, not that I could afford much as a schoolgirl. I remember coveting a pair of Cathy McGowan shoes in Dolcis - at 89/11, way beyond my reach!

Was that actually fashionable in 1965? Perhaps it depends on where you were living.

In about 1965 I bought a red tartan swing coat with attached scarf from C & A, worn with long boots.
It was similar to this one.

I loved it but what was I thinking! 😁

I started work in 1969, spent some early salary on a grey maxi coat, it cost 9 guineas.

Wore it over my mini skirts, I had read nothing sexier than a maxi coat over a mini skirt.

The short dresses and skirts were just right for me, I had good legs and no bust much, so the fashions suited me.
