Things left on the stairs

I’m always leaving stuff on the stairs and I’ve got to stop because I’ve slipped on things several times now and have been lucky to get away with it. It’s usually shoes or mail that needs sorting, the latter being the most dangerous. I only started doing it when everyone left home.

I used to do the “take it up if you’re going up”, but no longer, because anything left on the stairs is transported up to her bed by the dog and either chewed lovingly (shoes, folded towels, etc) or shredded (toilet rolls) or punctured (shampoo, handwash, etc). I make sure my phone’s in my pocket to record flights done!

I have a friend who does this but every time I have been to her house the things are left there for ages. She steps over them to get up the stairs. I see no point to this and when I have been there I will say "Should I take this up?". Her reply is usually "No, don't worry I will do it" I don't visit that often so I don't know how long things stay on the stairs but I am guessing that eventually she can't step over them so HAS to take them up!!

I have bad osteoarthritis so once i come down, its for the day- so i kindly ask one of them to take things up (new loo rolls, toilet cleaners etc) But no they stay there till i go up to bed whereupon i have to add it to my huge totebag or if large(packs loo rolls) have to plonk it all the way up the stairs in front of me.

Oh Eddiecat! My 2 sons do that!😂 I do repeat my late mams saying of 'dont go up empty-handed' but still they ignore it!

No problem with picking up things to take up upstairs. My problem is with going upstairs to get something and not being able to remember what I wanted. There used to be a stairlift joke going around... You need a stairlift that's so speedy that it can get you upstairs before you've forgotten why you wanted to go there.

Mainly shoes. Bathroom stuff - toilet rolls, soap etc - when I have just been on a big shop.

I have never known DH pick any of it up and take it upstairs.

I think we also have a house fairy who clears up behind DH. She seems to have gone on strike a bit recently. I need to have a word

I think the house fairy need to teach DH to clear up after himself. He’s not a child.

I realise this Grandma70. However, he is happy to live in more of a mess than I am so it ends up being a battle of wills. Frankly, it is easier to just do it myself as I can't stand stuff all over every horizontal surface. I usually just dump all of his stuff in one place for him to sort out later. He is not a hoarder, just untidy. I am the opposite.

Have trained myself to never leave stuff on the stairs now, instead I take things up straight away in order to get just that little bit more, much needed exercise. Not sure how long I'll keep it up!

Reverse here , stuff has to go down. ie newspapers and bottles for recycling as well as the daily small rubbish bag and composting bag. Fortunately if left at the top of the stairs at the right time DH will sort it and rubbish and composting goes out when I tidy the kitchen for the night

When my children were living at home the rule was if anything of their's was left on the stairs and not taken up to their rooms then at the end of the week it would be thrown out. They were usually very good at taking their stuff up.

No, grandtanteJE65 - mine can be left on the bedroom floor overnight but seem disappear early morning into the laundry basket.

My husband gets up before me. I never see what happens to my socks till I find them in the washing.

Sometimes they are gone for a few days and magically reappear in my sock drawer! 😍

Everyone knows that only mum/ grandma/ the lady of the house can carry things up from the bottom of the stairs. It to do with chromosomes apparently.

Are men genetically incapable of placing their dirty socks in the dirty-clothes' basket too?

I began to do that when I moved into a house after living in flats for so long. Nowadays I will NOT make a special journey for something that is upstairs. It has to wait until I am coming down. I have two networked desktops and each is accessible from the other.

Every time I have to go into another room I look around to see if there is anything I need to take with me.

My dear old friend lived in an old house with steep stairs . So she had a pulley and basket contraption fitted, which solved her problem.. When I asked her why she didn’t have a chair-lift fitted, she said that was the only exercise she had, going up and down the stairs - fair enough.

I don’t leave anything actually on the stairs because I think one of us would trip over whatever it is and fall. Our stairs are divided into two, half way up there is a study off the side. What I do is throw stuff up to that floor area to be taken up later. Usually shoes and shopping bags ( our kitchen is on the ground floor)

Like you, I never leave objects on stairs, seems to me like an accident waiting to happen.
Laundry is carried up and down the stairs in a basket when needed.I keep loo rolls in the airing cupboard upstairs.
Can’t think of anything else that needs to go upstairs.

In my last house, I have to admit that I used the stairs as a shoe rack. As I was usually the only occupant, I knew where to put my feet and never stumbled on the footwear. Now that I have no stairs, I make use of a shoe rack in the bottom of a cupboard.

I have two separate piles- my stuff and my son's stuff. I take up whichever is at the top- he sometimes takes stuff up but I can't guarantee where it will end up!
