Just saw this on TV. I have a tin in my cupboard and will keep it for ever now.

I can vividly remember the day our teacher at primary school told us the story of Samson and the dead lion on the tin with bees buzzing around him.

Our little school had just 3 classrooms. I was in the middle room so it must have been about 1961/62. It was a sunny day and our teacher stood with his back to the window. The sun shone in over his head and I could see trees in the background. He held up a tin of the syrup which he had borrowed from our school kitchen and pointed out the lion. He then told us the story and I remember telling my Mum about it when I went home.

Now it’s going because it may offend some snowflakes and we are having just a lion’s face that looks like a cartoon instead.

I once set this as a homework for my RE class to the Year 7 pupils. They had to find, and name, the item with the lion and bees on it and tell me the Biblical quotation. Every single pupil came in with the homework done and we discussed the biblical quotation. Young though they were they understood that not all people use superior strength for the wrong reasons and that a strong, well-run society can make life 'sweet' for everyone. None of them were traumatised. Nor did I receive any parental complaints. The 'sweetness' derives from the fact that the bees made a hive in the lion and produced honey. I rather suspect that a good few of them convinced their parents they needed to buy the tin to do their homework and had an excuse to scoff the lot.

Common sense post at last. 👏👏 It’s been on tins since the 1880s and I have been aware of it all my life as my kids have all their lives. None of us are traumatised. 🤣🤣🤣

I feel like that comedian on TV who used to say “it’s a puppet” only I’m saying “it’s a drawing.”

Don't care.

Who said anyone was traumatised?

Chardy Thu 22-Feb-24 07:58:04

Lyles are rebranding after 150 years. That's the story.
GB News, Express and Mail choose to use the word 'woke'. Why? Were there complaints about picture of the rotting carcass of a lion with a swarm ofbees?

No need for alarm. The rotting carcass will remain on the syrup tin.

The poor dears who find it so awful shouldn’t look at it then. Concentrate on what’s inside and leave tradition alone fgs!

Sacrilege!
Mind you so is Golden Syrup in a plastic bottle IMO - dh once got a bit of a mouthful for buying that instead of GS in a Proper Tin!
As least you can get the last remains out of a tin.

But you can't put it in a microwave...

Sheila11 Thu 22-Feb-24 11:10:05

I don’t understand why the bees are even depicted. It’s golden syrup - not honey🤔

Lindylou23 Thu 22-Feb-24 11:10:14

I have always thought the lion was sleeping....

mae13 Thu 22-Feb-24 11:11:01

Don't surprise me - it's an emblem of our colonial past, and according to the dictates of Wokery, we have an obligation to re-write the past.
And acknowledge Boadicea, Elizabeth I, Mary Tudor etc, etc, as transgender women/men/Martians. Take your pick - the world has gone made anyway.

Spinnaker, I love your teapot! Oh no, you've set me off wanting one 🤣

Nan0 Thu 22-Feb-24 11:14:12

I think it is appalling to change it!

missdeke Thu 22-Feb-24 11:26:30

I just found out that you are supposed to discard it after 3 months as it goes off! I better wash my tin out then as I must have had mine 10 years or more. I prefer Treacle to Golden syrup anyway.

Uschi Thu 22-Feb-24 11:27:44

Correct Greenfinch. The traditional tin will remain unchanged…fortunately! Its classic design is a treasure and the new design on plastic an abomination!

*Spinnaker*, I love your teapot! Oh no, you've set me off wanting one 🤣

Thank you Fairycakes. It was from a glassware/china shop in Keswick whilst we were on a break in the Lake District. I believe they can still be bought online, along with all sorts of other teapots.

Who said anyone was traumatised?

Judging by the comments on the thread, it seems that those who can't cope with a perfectly normal rebrand on the modern plastic bottles who are traumatised. Yet they are the ones who have been bandying around the word 'snowflake'. 😁

eazybee Thu 22-Feb-24 11:40:31

I bought syrup in a plastic bottle and it discoloured, clogged up the hole and deteriorated in appearance and taste. Golden syrup is used infrequently in many households, (pancakes, porridge? ) thus the tin does a much better job of preserving it, and is far more pleasant to look at: a dead lion,(not portrayed as rotting and a swarm of bees.
Apparently the tins will be available, as 'heritage' tins, and there will be trouble if Waitrose do not stock them.

Fairycakes Thu 22-Feb-24 11:48:05

Thank you, Spinnaker. I have found one on ebay. It's a little pricey, but perhaps a generous family member will buy it and put it away as a future Christmas present for me 😁. I expect news of the logo change will push the prices up in the future 🤔

Buttonjugs Thu 22-Feb-24 11:49:09

It’s nothing to do with being ‘woke’ it’s to update the image for the modern day. To be honest I didn’t know that the lion was dead or the story behind it but it’s biblical and most people in this modern age wouldn’t appreciate it. It’s a rebrand for today’s society not ‘woke’ at all.

Bluecat Thu 22-Feb-24 11:57:54

I was surprised, when reading comments on Facebook, by how many people thought the lion was asleep. I thought it was a well-known Bible story.

The bit that never made sense to me was putting part of that story on a syrup tin. It would be more appropriate on a jar of honey.

However, I would be sorry to see it go.

Fairycakes Thu 22-Feb-24 12:04:02

I can't imagine anyone complaining about the current logo on the lyle's tin. In fact, doubt people notice it. As with most products, it's what's inside that counts. I'm not sure why quaint things have to change. I'm tired of hearing about the modern era and this push for change. Our modern world (IMHO) has become bland and colourless. It needs more beauty, not less 😩.

SIMBO1818 Thu 22-Feb-24 12:04:06

I thought it said on the original briefing that the lion was staying on the tin but was going to be removed off of the other items.

deedeedum Thu 22-Feb-24 12:06:45

WE need to organise a protest against this change. We are losing our legacy.

Fairycakes Thu 22-Feb-24 12:07:08

Keeping the logo on the tin will be temporary. It will soon follow suit with the company's other containers.

vegansrock Thu 22-Feb-24 12:09:49

I expect those complainers have a stash of gollies in their house too.
