What was your favourite comic as a child?

I remember my sister writing in to Cathy and Clare with a problem concerning her boyfriend. Apparently he had "desert disease", otherwise known as "wandering palms" They got married eventually so the complaint must have been overlooked!

I loved Girl comic, and used to have the annual every Christmas. I also liked School Friend, and wished I had friends like the ones in it.

My best friend and I spent many happy hours sat on her bedroom floor with Cathy and Clare x

Mandy was my favourite - think one of the regular stories was called Valda? There was also a story about a palomino horse, but can't remember the name. Does anyone else remember the Look-In magazine? Then I went onto Jackie - loved the Cathy and Claire "agony aunt" page .

I gave several boxes of our girls’ annuals, summer specials and some comics to our local Oxfam book shop recently. Try as I might, I couldn’t win any of our five grandsons over to Bunty, Mandy, etc. DS’s Beano and Dandy annuals went down a storm, though.

My favourite by far was Bunty. And I used to enjoy my Broons/Oor Wullie annuals at Christmas.

I carried on with comics, then read particular magazines until I was well into my 30s.
It was still a treat

Oh yes, the Young Elizabethan. I had some poems and book reviews published in that when I was around 13. They PAID me. Oh, the joy!

That’s so sad Grandma70s. Did your parents not approve of them? They were such innocent fun.

My parents were very keen for us to read, and we had a lot of proper books. They thought comics a waste of time and money. It didn’t seem to occur to them that we could do both! I did let my children have comics. The brainiest of them was a Beano addict.

Rupert started in The Daily Express in 1920 and still going strong.

Yes we were made to read the Children’s Newspaper . Also remember the Young Elizabethan.
Also had Schoolfriend and the Rupert Bear annual at Christmas. Btw was RB also a weekly or serialised somewhere? Only remember the annual.

Bunty! Used to draw background scenes for the paper dolls to live in.

I think my mum disapproved of comics, really.

I don't know if it was because of the cost, or the content, but I felt really lucky if I was allowed to have one every now and then.

Was anyone else made to have The Children’s Newspaper instead of a comic? Very worthy, and I did win a Blackbird fountain pen for handwriting just in time to transfer to grammar school, but absolutely not fun. Eventually allowed School Friend instead which I used to collect from the newsagent and read while I walked to school. I loved Tuesday mornings.

GrandmasueUK, I found the Jack and Jill annual on ebay, which I showed in the opening thread. I could only get hold of the 1970s one, which was after my time, but it had the Walter Hottle Bottle story, so I purchased it to relive my childhood 😊❤️

I had Bunty and June and Schoolfriend, on Monday, my brother had Dandy; and I got Judy on Wednesday, with Beano for brother. At weekends we got Beezer and Topper. We were very lucky to get the summer specials as well and the annuals for Christmas.

I found hundreds of Bunty and Judy comics on a couple of DVDs on eBay. It was great to be able to relive my childhood again.

Was it Bunty that had the cut out doll on the back with paper cut out clothes, shoes bags etc? I loved that but it was annoying that the fold back flaps that attached the clothes to the doll never stayed in place and the clothes fell off!

The Beano, the Dandy and the Eagle. Definitely no girlie stuff!

My favourites too, passed on via my grandmother by a family of boys, so no girlie stuff for me and my sisters either.

Bunty, followed by Jackie, Patches and Smash Hits, followed by the NME and Melody Maker. Happy carefree days.

Yes. Just looked it up. Twinkle started in 1968.

School Friend and Girls Crystal and also remember sneaking a look at my Mum's Woman's Weekly so I could read The Robin Family.
