Thanks Greenfinch It will be an especially sad day tomorrow at his Funeral. Let’s hope the Russian Police don’t try to take over and destroy flowers left in his memory.

Excellent choice NanKate. It looks good.

We’ve bought a plant and DH has found a picture frame for the photo that I have printed off and we have a tiny candle. We will put it in the window tomorrow.

Thank you RosiesMaw

Navalny was not perfect but he was brave enough to stand up to Putin even though he knew his chances of surviving were nil.

There are more brave men and women incarcerated by Putin, they need our support and prayers (if that is your thing).

Louella12 Ithink many of us (if not most) are aware of his background.

Thoughts do evolve of course and I believe his have done so.
Amnesty International - if you remember re-included him in (I think) 2021.

Greenfinch Thu 29-Feb-24 09:36:33

Not much mention is made of Navalny’s faith in his obituaries but he did turn from atheism to Christianity quite late on in his short life. However, he did not align himself with the Russian Orthodox Church which he most likely saw as being too close to Putin.

Greenfinch Thu 29-Feb-24 09:27:21

I do not “adore” him but I do respect him for being brave enough to oppose Putin, to return to a country after having been poisoned and to withstand brutal imprisonment.

NanKate

Thanks for coming back RosiesMaw. I know you to be a fair contributor on GN.

I am going to the local Garden Centre today to choose some flowers for tomorrow. 💐

@ Nankate flowers to you from me too for your consistent and sincere support for this man and his cause .

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 29-Feb-24 08:49:25

I don't think anyone is deifying this man Louella but I hope that you would join us in respecting his bravery in challenging the psychopath in charge of his country.

Louella12 Thu 29-Feb-24 08:42:59

Are we all aware of this man's far right, anti immigration stance?

Very well documented

Might be worth researching who you all seem to adore. Just because he's anti Putin does not make everything about him admirable

I apologise if I am over reacting, it just seems common courtesy to make the effort to get a name right - as I pointed out last August on another thread

Absolutely Chocolate.
Thanks folks for joining me on this small thread
His barbaric treatment has really resonated with me. He is about my son’s age and perhaps that is why I feel such a connection
Apologies for spelling his name incorrectly. My late father-in-law always spelt my name with a C not a K which upset me

(My post then)

My apologies for nit-picking NanKate
I just felt “Alexie” looked so feminine whereas Alexei is of course the Russian form of “Alexander

NanKate Wed 28-Feb-24 15:40:42

My apologies for getting the spelling wrong, it should be Alexei, however when I tried to correct it my laptop switched the letters round again, so any of us who put in the wrong spelling could be having the same problem as me.

The last thing I want to do is cause offence.

I do feel RosiesMaw you have over reacted, when all I was trying to do was alert his followers, like us, to the funeral on Friday, so we could all pay our respects to a very brave man.

Greenfinch Wed 28-Feb-24 15:11:29

Thank you for this information NanKate. I will light a candle in my house for him.

Granniesunite Wed 28-Feb-24 14:31:54

Many thanks NanKate for this thread. You are obviously a compassionate and caring poster.

I’ll say a prayer for him and his brave family and a 💐for you.

NotSpaghetti Wed 28-Feb-24 13:57:51

Is this an ordinary "family" cemetery do we know please or is it the locked and guarded sort?

JamesandJon33 Wed 28-Feb-24 13:41:12

Well said RosiesMaw

RosiesMaw Wed 28-Feb-24 13:36:11

May I respectfully suggest that OP and indeed anyone else to whom this applies, accords this brave man the courtesy of getting his name right?
It is not “Alexie” reminiscent of the young woman in Monarch of the Glen, but ALEXEI

It offends me every time I see it rendered in this “girly” version.
FGS this man gave up his independence and ultimately his life to make a stand against a cruel and totalitarian regime, imprisoned, tortured and eventually murdered at Putin’s behest. .
Is it too much to honour his memory and get his name right?

Alexei Navalny’s funeral service and burial will take place in Moscow on Friday, his spokesman said, but his allies accused the Kremlin of thwarting their attempts to organise a bigger event a day earlier.

Kira Yarmysh, his spokesman, posted on X that a service would be held on Friday at 2pm Moscow time in the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God in the Moscow district of Maryino where Navalny used to live.

Navalny would then be buried at the Borisovskoye cemetery, which is located on the other side of the Moskva River to the south.

Such services, presided over by a priest and accompanied by choral singing, usually allow people to file past the open casket of the deceased to say their farewell.

It was not immediately clear how the authorities would ensure crowd control, but Reuters said a heavy police presence is likely.

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 28-Feb-24 11:55:45

Good plan NanKate. I shall do the same.

maddyone Wed 28-Feb-24 11:54:11

Where is the funeral taking place? Or don’t we know?

NanKate Wed 28-Feb-24 11:51:49

I shall buy my flowers tomorrow and put them in my window with his photograph. 💐

No doubt the police will be surrounding the church.
