“ Hi Mum! Its Mothers Day this Sunday. We could come round for dinner at yours and invite the others. Love YDS”

GrauntyHelen Thu 07-Mar-24 16:35:26

I assume you will be providing the meal and doing all the work in the spirit of Mother's Day ! Would be my response If so see you then

Littleannie

I am sorry for that ghastly text. How horrible for you. Huge hugs from us all here 💕💕💕

I just don’t understand why so many object to providing a meal for their children on Mothering Sunday, but expect to be ‘treated’. It would be a great treat for me to have my son and his family round for a meal and I certainly wouldn’t be expecting them to provide any of it or clear up afterwards.

MissAdventure Thu 07-Mar-24 16:48:34

Well, I don't like cooking, for one thing.
The other is that I'd like to spend time with my family, not preparing and cooking food.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 07-Mar-24 17:04:54

I’m not so keen on cooking nowadays but I would gladly do it for a family get together. For such occasions I choose something as quick and simple as possible which won’t tether me to the cooker for too long, and prep in advance. There’s no way I would ask to be taken out or have the food provided.

Daisydaisydaisy Thu 07-Mar-24 17:44:39

I agree with Poppyred ☹️🙂🩷💚💛

I really cannot understand the perspective of those who see the text message so negatively. The fact that my adult children want to spend time with me and share food round my table is a joy beyond measure. I love to cook but if I didn't, it would be the easiest thing in the world to suggest a pot luck meal or takeaway.
We'll be celebrating in exactly this way on Saturday which leaves Sunday free for all the grandchildren & their mummies.

It’d make me laugh, but I’d love it. We have lots of family days at each others’ - with five young boys it’s much more fun all round than going out for a meal mob handed. DH would probably do a Sunday dinner or we’d just buy in pizzas or curries. The DDs and DDIL deserve a celebration just as much as I think I do. And they could call it whatever they like. smile

BazingaGranny Thu 07-Mar-24 18:40:06

Hope you’ve got some helpful answers here.

I must say I think (if you have the money, of course) that it’s very easy to prepare a meal of some sort for 6-10 people. As others have said, children love bought frozen pizza and chips, both easy to heat up, and then also do a lovely salad. Ask someone to bring pudding. And someone else to bring possessor.

My DH when he wants to cook, wants to do everything ‘right’, which can take 3 days! And can be exhausting. I think that it’s overkill and takes away a lot of the fun.

This year, we are going out on Mothering Sunday and hope to get a sandwich or two, somewhere probably Sainsbury’s, when we go for a walk along the Thames.

Do hope that everyone has a good day, whatever you are or are not doing. 🌷🌷🌷

My dd is taking me out to a lovely lunch on Sunday she’s always spoiling me, my son will send flowers as is usual for him. I’ve got a fabulous family

Ali08 Thu 07-Mar-24 20:01:04

Great!
I've got some gin in but could do with more, bring more lemonade, too!
What food are you bringing, and will you need to cook it here or will you have it pre-cooked?
If cooking here it'll be great to watch you all cook and wash/clean up afterwards while I drink the gin & chat with you all.
Can't wait to see you.
Love mum xoxo

Was so looking forward to brunch with my DD and GDs this Sunday only to be told just this morning that the little one - she’s only 7 months old - has chicken pox! (Her sister had it last week so it was touch and go anyway). I’ve had it but my immune system is severely compromised due to cancer so I can’t risk being with her. Such a shame but I’ll get over it and I’ll raise a glass to all you mums this Sunday! 🍷

Summerfly Thu 07-Mar-24 22:37:25

I wouldn’t mind at all. We’re a close family, but eldest DD lives abroad so that won’t happen. My other DD lives close by and we’re always either there or at mine for Sunday dinner, apart from Mother’s Day and we always spend it with her and her family. This year will be different though due to me being poorly. DD will come here and do all the cooking. DH will help out and do the clearing up afterwards.

Cheers Rusume 🥂

I’m not bothered about Mother’s Day ….and as it’s also my daughter’s birthday this year …I’d rather it was about her….and of course she’s a mum as well …so 🤷🏻‍♀️

singingnutty Fri 08-Mar-24 07:33:43

I would say please pop in and see me but they know there won’t be lunch involved. I’ve been in hospital all week having had a big op but hoping to be home today. Both DS’s have visited which was great and the best thing on Mother’s Day will be to see them in my house on Sunday. Way to go yet but one step at a time on the health front!

Bonnybanko Fri 08-Mar-24 07:44:06

Cheers mdears this is how I’ll be spending Mother’s Day 💐💐exceot for the weather because it’s blooming cold and windy at the moment

yellowfox Fri 08-Mar-24 07:45:38

Oh 'Little Annie' I feel for you. My DD can be callous but that is terrible for you.
Cool Coco take note, at least your family want to see you.
Ask THEM to order which takeaway they want!!!

Mags1111 Fri 08-Mar-24 09:38:02

Fortunately uba Deliveroo or other company can sort it all for them

Katek Fri 08-Mar-24 09:47:24

"Love to see you all - can you collect the takeaway on your way over? It's pay on collection"

Littleannie

It's better than the text my son sent me last Mother's Day which said 'why don't you die mother. The sooner you're dead the better as nobody will miss you'.

God! Littleannie how terrible, hope your ok flowers xx

Grandma2002 Fri 08-Mar-24 12:14:46

I am not used to this kind of text. My son always says we are going for Mothering Sunday lunch and hope you will join us. Sometimes we get picked up but usually we meet at a previously booked, by son, venue. It's really lovely to catch up especially when I am presented with flowers and a card. We go half with costs as it is our daughter in law's celebration too.

ileea Fri 08-Mar-24 18:36:22

We often do the family dinners at my parents. We always do potluck with whoever else is invited, so mom doesn't have extra work. We also do alot of the tidying up after.
So I would text back and ask if they are arranging the dinner and you will supply plates and cutlery.

LadyGaGa Fri 08-Mar-24 18:48:41

I would just laugh it off OP.
Make a joke of the text and just enjoy being with your family. I’m sure your daughter would be distraught if she thought she had upset you. Being needed is a gift. Mothers Day can be sad for
a lot of people so, my thoughts go out to them x

Aww Littleannie that’s so sad. I have a neurodivergent, drug addict son who has sent me many of the same messages (he’s actually doing great at the moment)…I hope you’re ok xx

How very sad. Warm wishes to you both. 💐💐💐
