People who refuse to slow down in life

I listen to my own personal energy level ie I almost never stop because I have a lot of healthy energy. I listen to my body and right now have some lower back pain, so have already been out on my bike, to keep my pelvic area mobile.

My back pain under control without drugs so my aim today is to move as much as possible and to make the movements effective ie squats to strengthen the back muscles, which support my spine. I can do squats every time I lower myself to clean lower windows, lift full length blinds, clear under my bed etc

Life, my life, will never be wasted by sitting and doing nothing, the exception being if my body tells me that I need some rest.

I do jobs in the loft, balancing on struts, not long ago fixed two minor leaks in the soil vent pipe and then insulated it. It was too high and I am short, so did the job by doing `rock climbing` chimneying up two struts

I dig and look after my whole house and garden myself, am very capable and have lately got myself on a list for a local allotment. I might be 76 but have good strength in my body, through lifting heavy compost bagsetc

No way am I going to droop in a corner, waiting to get old. How I age is up to me

Keep going as long as you can. My brother tore down his old house and built a new one with only a little help from contactors. He was in his 70s. He still has his fruit and veg business. Grows all the produce himself and in his 80s now.

My neighbour is like this.
I hear her practically running past, puffing and groaning.

Straight upstairs she goes, then 5 minutes later she is puffing and groaning, coming back downstairs to go back down the town to do the next thing she "must do".

When she knocks, she is sometimes sweating and grey and thirsty, because her diabetes is so poorly controlled.

It's as if she cannot stop.

My mother in law was like that. The sort of person who would bustle about while you were trying to sit and have a nice family meal. She wouldn't stop. DH is the same. I demonstratively make a cup of tea and sit and read when he's fiddling about, making as much noise as possible. I wouldn't mind if his bustling resulted in the place looking tidier or cleaner but he just leaves everything.

Oh don’t try …surely it’s best to die running than sitting drooping in a corner

That is what I am trying to work out.

I am not sure at all, that in her heart of hearts, that is what she wants.
She is not very old. And loves life.

Why should I stop when I'm a pefectly capable woman who will be 70 this month

Being perfectly capable is great.

I think inspiration/motivation all play a part in how lively we are

I think if you "slow down" just because you believe you're too old to do the things you've always done,THATs the slippery slope.I have no intention of giving up the things I do everyday .Last year I cut all the branches off around 30 ,15 foot tall leylanndi ,carried the stuff to our van and loaded it while my OH cut down the trunks.Helped him to build a new 8foot fence in its place ..and yes I carrried the fence straps from the front to the back of the house and then did hard landscaping once it was done.We did the whole job in under 2 weeks .Our young neighbours got some men in to do almost the same job ,it took a month.
Why should I stop when I'm a pefectly capable woman who will be 70 this month ?

Maybe she would love to slow down at times just as I would love to have the energy she has.

You could be right actually.

I feel I’m slowing down well before my time. Just not aging well. A friend who sounds like yours invigorates me and exasperates me in roughly equal measures. I think if she slowed down like me I’d be seriously concerned for her own health as it wouldn’t be her. We are all different. Maybe she would love to slow down at times just as I would love to have the energy she has.

I know what you mean!
I am the opposite to my friend too.

fancythat Mon 04-Mar-24 08:28:50

It is badly affecting my friend's health now.
I think she may choose to go all the way with it.

Obviously she can choose to do that.
But if there is something a few of us can say to change things, and she would still be happy and alive, well..

Juliet27 Mon 04-Mar-24 08:26:47

I just wish I could speed up!!

AlwaysSmiling Mon 04-Mar-24 08:26:17

People are different so let them get on with it. I do my thing and they do theirs.

Taichinan Mon 04-Mar-24 08:25:53

It's probably just the way they are - to each their own as they say.

fancythat Mon 04-Mar-24 08:19:15

Even if it affects their health

There are plenty of people who choose to do it.
Obviously it is their life.

Personally I dont understand it.
