Just that, really grin. If you are visiting someone who has a calendar with days filled in, or cards on the mantelpiece do you see it as ok to have a look, or do you see them as private?

Oooh! I have to, they are too tempting!!! If you don’t want them read, put them away! I am amazed I am in such a minority! Where is the harm? It’s just idle curiosity I suppose!

I wouldn't read other peoples cards...and definitely not calendars...nor would I snoop in other peoples bedrooms,
I had a friend and her husband visit one day...he went upstairs to the toilet, and shouted down to his wife to come up and have a look at the bedroom...very rude...

😲

Was he ever invited back? How could he think that was ok?

No, I wouldn't look at the calendar or cards.

We used to hang our Christmas cards over the fireplace so my daughter wouldn't pull them down and one evening my mil was babysitting while my husband and I went out. We got an urgent call to come home by my fil and found that my mil had dragged a chair over to the fire to try and read our cards and had fallen into the fireplace!! She wasn't hurt but was very embarrassed getting caught trying to read the cards!!

SueDonim Mon 18-Mar-24 13:13:26

It’s private! I wouldn’t dream of poking about in other people’s business.

Calendars are on display yes but not for other people to read surely it’s for the family that live there. One of my big bug bearers are nosey people can’t abide them

Where does the idea come from that anything in someone else's house is fair game? I like to display cards (what else would you do with them?) but I don't see them as public property. Of course people can see the fronts, so saying 'what a lovely card' or similar is fine, but reading the messages inside is a step or three too far for me.

Wall calendars are for others in the house to know what people are doing, but not for visitors to look at appointments, and commenting on them is outrageous, IMO. It just wouldn't occur to me to do it. I mean, who needs to know that their neighbour is getting their haemorrhoids sorted out on Tuesday?

We're all different, I suppose.

Goodness no I wouldn’t dream of looking inside a card that wasn’t sent to me. Or read what is written on other peoples calendars why would I.

Pantglas2 Mon 18-Mar-24 12:43:56

One friend has her calendar in the kitchen and opens her mail and leaves the bills, appointments etc beneath it, probably to enter stuff later.

Another friend and I had been invited for coffee and cake and she thought nothing of perusing that month’s reminders of birthdays, anniversaries, medical appointments etc. She then proceeded to flick through the opened mail while our hostess fetched a parcel delivery from Evri!

When I remonstrated with her, she told me that anything left in view was fair game 😱 - she hasn’t been invited to my house since.

I might read family birthday cards and we all read the letters that come with Xmas cards, outside the family no and certainly not diaries.
I once commented on a beautiful Xmas card only to find it was from a lady that my friend thought her husband was much to interested in, that stopped me!

mabon1 Mon 18-Mar-24 12:26:09

Certainly not, rather rude in my opinion. What a nosey poke you are.

Missiseff Mon 18-Mar-24 12:03:06

No. I used to read cards out of habit, because my Mum used to. Then I became uncomfortable when she read one I'd sent to my husband & realised I shouldn't be doing it. Don't think I've ever read anyone's calendar.

grandtanteJE65 Mon 18-Mar-24 12:00:16

No, to me this is just as wrong as reading their letters, e-mails or listening to their half of a telephone conversatio.

Tanjamaltija Mon 18-Mar-24 12:00:05

Not my circus, not my monkeys. I even gave my children their birthday cards to open, when they were one year old and could not read, and then we read them together. I know a couple of people who specifically ask to use the toilet so they can check out the medicine chest. I would never rat on them, but I don't trust them.

sandelf Mon 18-Mar-24 11:59:05

Cards - not unless invited to. Calendar - of course - it is on display.

DamaskRose Mon 18-Mar-24 11:59:02

Definitely not!

Buttonjugs Mon 18-Mar-24 11:57:37

I always have, but people have never said anything. I don’t visit other people these days so maybe it’s just as well, I didn’t realise it was considered rude or intrusive. But I am on the spectrum perhaps that’s why.

Desiree1153 Mon 18-Mar-24 11:46:27

I have, as do most Dutch people, a calendar in the toilet so most people can’t help but read it. It doesn’t bother me, the same with cards, go ahead but I don’t do it in other people’s houses, not even in my kids houses unless I’m invited to do so. My eldest has a calendar in her toilet too so we can see what she has on.

RosiesMaw Mon 18-Mar-24 11:45:44

Good heavens, no!
How nosey and intrusive is that?

OurKid1 Mon 18-Mar-24 11:40:33

Absolutely not. Having said that I visit an elderly lady who has early dementia, so I will often ask her if I can check her calendar (which her daughter writes on) in case she needs a reminder of appointments. She does take a great deal of pleasure in sharing her cards with me though. So ... I guess, although I said not, it does depend on the circumstances.

Megslotts Mon 18-Mar-24 11:38:52

Theexwife

No, I wouldn’t , although they may be on show I still see it as private.

I know someone who puts fictitious events on her calendar incase people look and say they can see she is free on a certain day for childcare.

Well that's clever grin

annifrance Mon 18-Mar-24 11:37:45

No

Purplepixie Mon 18-Mar-24 03:36:08

Never, because they are personal and private and I wouldn’t like it done to me.

Mel1967

Yes, I would

What are you like Mell.
