Do you read people's calendars and cards?

Just that, really grin. If you are visiting someone who has a calendar with days filled in, or cards on the mantelpiece do you see it as ok to have a look, or do you see them as private?

Mel1967 Sun 17-Mar-24 21:16:58

Yes, I would

Galaxy Sun 17-Mar-24 21:12:07

Next time she is due round just put a list of bogus appointments, sexual health clinic, gamblers anonymous, Scientologist AGM, etc smile

Bridgeit Sun 17-Mar-24 21:06:53

Definitely Private.

Doodledog Sun 17-Mar-24 20:52:25

I can't remember the last card I got that had a private message in it grin. All the same, you never know, do you wink.

We both use our phones for appointments etc, but have a calendar for things we might both need to know, so my doc's appointment was on there so that Mr D didn't arrange for us both to be doing something at the time. It was just about iron levels, so nothing too personal, but again, it could have been anything. My mum would have fainted if I told her it was because I am pregnant with triplets. . .

I might do at my daughter’s but she actively encourages me to. I don’t mind close family looking at my cards on display. If there were any private messages in them I would not put them on display. I wouldn’t dream of looking at things like that in a friend’s house though.

I don't put cards on display - tend to bin them. I don't have a calendar or diary either - just reminders on my phone. A certain family member (female) would look around and ask where my calendar was - even bought me one after I said I don't use them. She certainly would have read it, but then, she's nosy. Another infuriating habit of hers was to ring the doorbell - then immediately peer through the letterbox - until I fitted a draught excluder (just to stop her doing it).

Private.

I dont even want to, even when I am invited to, generally.
I dont care enough!

crazyH Sun 17-Mar-24 20:04:46

No, never , although my nosey neighbour can never leave my cards alone. And if my mail is still on the mat, she’ll pick them up and have a good look 👀

flappergirl Sun 17-Mar-24 19:57:38

Good grief no. Who on earth picks up cards or scrutinises someone else's calendar. I would only do so if invited to read them or under exceptional circumstances, an example of which escapes me.

No.
My mum often shows me her cards.
I used to have a friend who when in someones house, if she went upstairs to the loo, would go round all the rooms upstairs and have a look in.

I know people who would love to do this. My friend's sister is one of them - she always comments on things she's seen in other people's houses, and when asked how she knows she'll say 'Oh, I saw it when I went to the loo - the bedroom door was open' and the wardrobe door, and the drawer inside it, no doubt. She's only been here once, when I was dropped off on the way back from a group outing, and she asked to come in to use the bathroom. She was visibly disappointed when I told her there was a loo downstairs grin

I find it depends who it is. Friends and acquaintances no never. Sometimes with family I might.

NotSpaghetti Sun 17-Mar-24 18:31:14

Cards of family on display I'd ask if I could look.

My own children have been known to look at my cards too. They are often hand made so I suppose invite looking at.

I don't look at calendars though!

Cossy Sun 17-Mar-24 18:27:02

Yes, at family and very close friends houses I have been known to!

Never as a professional in someone’s home nor in those peoples homes I have known well for years and years.

I certainly wouldn’t open cupboards and drawers and have a good poke around though grin

Sago Sun 17-Mar-24 18:23:49

No, when my mother used to come and stay she would read any cards, letters, anything not locked away.
I once went out and left her in my home alone, on my return she asked me how I knew a certain person, I asked why she wanted to know, she said she had read through our address book and couldn’t work out how we would have met this person!
No shame.

Ladyleftfieldlover Sun 17-Mar-24 18:16:54

Our calendar is in the hall. I don’t mind if people read what’s written on it. It was my 70th last year and many visitors read the messages on my birthday cards. I didn’t mind a bit. All these things were/are on display.

Pantglas2 Sun 17-Mar-24 18:05:02

I don’t read other folks calendars or cards without invitation.

My diary with all appointments is in my handbag at all times and although cards are on the mantelpiece I wouldn’t expect anyone to just pick them up and read the greeting inside. (especially not Mr PGs anniversary ones, he’s been known to make some racy comments 😉)

Shinamae Sun 17-Mar-24 17:54:58

I wouldn’t be the slightest bit interested in looking at somebody else’s calendar. I barely remember to look at my own! 🫣

MissInterpreted Sun 17-Mar-24 17:52:54

Well, I confess to looking at them - if they're out on display, they're fair game as far as I'm concerned.

dogsmother Sun 17-Mar-24 17:51:10

It really irritates me when anyone does this, but a lot do. Thing is if you put them on display I suppose it’s fair game but I get very irritated as I said when some do.

Definitely wouldn't read either cards or calendars in a friend's house. I keep all my appointments in my diary so my calendar isn't worth reading.
What I found quite rude was my Tesco delivery man having a look round my living room while I was unpacking and commenting.

Doodledog Sun 17-Mar-24 17:21:42

Jewelle

No I don’t. My mum does though. I hate it, horribly intrusive. But that’s her anyway.

Mine does too, which is why I asked.

Worse, she actually asked why I was going to the doctor, as I'd put the appointment on the calendar. We were in the sitting room, and the calendar is on the wall in the kitchen, so she read it as she went past on her way to the downstairs loo - she wasn't sitting next to it. She also read the MD cards, which were on the mantelpiece. They weren't private, but you don't know that until you've read them, so I think that's rude, too.

I just wondered if it was normal. I wouldn't dream of it myself.

JollyJilly Sun 17-Mar-24 17:15:15

No I don't because I am not interested.

Esmay Sun 17-Mar-24 17:12:06

Definitely not .
I think that it's very rude .
And I don't ask people questions either .
If someone wants to tell me something then fine , but sometimes I'll say whoaaa !
I never repeat confidences .
I've kept a friend's affair secret for 25 years .
I felt thoroughly irritated yesterday when one of my friends persisted in asking me about my personal life .
It's obvious that I don't want to be drawn into talking about things .
There is going to come the day when
saying it's private doesn't suffice and I'll walk away .

lixy Sun 17-Mar-24 17:03:31

I would read cards in a close relations house but not either in anybody else's.

Our calendar is on the kitchen wall and we have a whiteboard which I keep up to date with the next week's commitments so anyone coming in can read that of course.
We find that it's handy to have a central point of reference - when our Chn were at home we had one of those calendars with a column for each family member. The mantra of 'if it's not on the calendar it's not happening' avoided last minute demands to be taken to the other end of town for some event or other!
