Over the past few days we have had some young kids 10,_ 13 yo ? Who think it's very funny to come and bang on our front door and run away. It any time of day, two were late at night, approx 10 pm. Scared the life out of me. Police called. Any thoughts or advice welcome. Thanks

Not proud to admit it but my mates and I used to play this - not at 10pm though!

we know it wasn't right but those who do it these days should have better things to do.... you didn't do it down your own road of course so no one knew where you lived if caught

It's been revised recently possibly on TikTok it's now called Ding Ding Ditch. At night I'd be cross too, but it's just kids playing.

Knock Down Ginger

It must’ve been over 60 years ago that me and my brother knocked on Nora Yeos door and ran away. We did it a few times, the last time we did it she opened the door straight away, gave us the fright of our lives never did it again. We were probably about seven or eight…
(My brother and I for the pedants 🤓)

Had a spate of that afrer telling an 11 year old he/his parents were breaking the law, allowing him to ride an electric scooter on the road. Camera door bell caught him and friends. Repirted to police who were able to identify him at school. Parents apparently spoken to. Also received an apology from the 11 year old. My DH was in the late stage of palliative care and the door bell agitated him. Door bell camera very useful for dealing with nuisance.

It’s worse here, they kick peoples doors doing damage. My neighbour has a ring doorbell and after no reaction by the police, she asked the headmaster of the local school to take a look and there seem to be less incidents now.

MawBroon I never played that awful trick with the newspaper myself but remember being told about it.

Athrawes Wed 15-May-24 10:18:10

Oh dear. I remember doing it once with a group of friends - but once only. I felt very guilty afterwards - in fact I think we all did. We were about 9 years old

When it happened to me, I went out the back door and lay in wait. Next time they did it, I grabbed them and threatened to tell their parents. It didn't happen again.

We used to call it 'chappy, knockie' . I tried it once and got caught ( being the youngest and having wee fat short legs !) I never did it again !

Yes my dad used to tell me about this game they played - knock up ginger - apparently tying door knockers together and then pulling the string then scooting off. Of course he would never have been out at 10pm. It would have been a day time game. I know that because I know my grandmother.

Stop and Chat nooo.
it was the running away laughing that was the fun.... usually a group of kids and the slowest got caught

Last year we stayed in a cottage in a town in Shropshire. On several occasions day and night our peaceful trip away was disturbed.
It was unpleasant someone banged on the windows and kicked the front door.
We were told by locals in a pub it was a prank often done by local teens. Its something we don't experience at home and we don't wish to either.

Aveline

Be very careful if you open the front door and find a newspaper on fire on the mat.
Just thinking about old time tricks. Stamp on the newspaper and find it's full of dog poo. 😡

Aveline I would never have thought it of you!
(First time I had heard of either of these unpleasant pranks )

I can remember playing “knock down ginger “as a child, there were so many of us playing it must have been very annoying.

I wonder why it was called knock down ginger?

The police do not respond to a burglary or shoplifting I doubt the will deal with this.

We ignored the kids knocking as it didn't happen that often but then, a couple of years ago the craze developed into full shoulder barging which is terrifyingly loud. Especially after ten at night.

So we installed a Ring doorbell camera. It stopped. No problem since.

(Apart from the Ring camera picking up a little lad one morning who ran up and knocked. I think he must have heard about it from an older sibling. His father was with him and I heard the reaction on the recording. I don't think he'll do it again!!)

rafichagran Tue 14-May-24 20:47:38

Ignore them.

I only did it once when I was about 8 years old. I was egged on by school chums but I was absolutely terrified that my parents would find out. We lived in a smallish village where news travelled fast.

It was around lunchtime on a Saturday and much to my horror the man of the house instantly whipped open the front door and confronted me. He asked me how old I was, "I'm 8
I replied" with a trembling voice. Well then, he said, you're old enough to know better.

That moment is forever etched on my memory.

Chap door run here in Central Scotland.

Actually, if it happened to me, I would stop and chat.
Probably wouldnt be the reaction they were after. Either way, it probably would then stop.
I am happy to speak with daft kids", if that is all they are.

Sago Tue 14-May-24 20:15:02

Get a ring doorbell.

fancythat Tue 14-May-24 20:14:15

BlueBelle

Personally I wouldn’t bother the police for daft kids It s always been a trick of kids hasnt it Ignore it they ll get bored if they get no reaction

That would be my advice too.
