I hope no one minds but I need to talk and it would be nice to have some support. This is going to be long.
I watch my 4+5 yr old GDs 3 days a week for approximately 12 hours a day and also visits on weekends. My son’s children. My son works full time and goes to school at night to achieve a degree. I’ve been doing this for four years and it’s hard work. Yes, both were in diapers at the beginning and I did a good part of the potty training. As their grandmother I am playing a parental role in their lives and I don’t take it lightly. I teach, I read, we have art time, outdoor time, and short but precious naps. I love my girls dearly but am exhausted after the 3 long days and I get very little done because have to rest on my few days off. Both parents work. They are divorced and split custody. Childcare is outrageously expensive here and for two children, impossible. My oldest GD will start kindergarten in August. Thank goodness because she is ED and needs almost constant care. I suspect they both have ADHD. These are very difficult days. I have no freedom. I am awfully depressed today. I am a bit weepy and am already on an antidepressant. I think I’m losing my friends. I wanted to travel a bit after retirement. I looked forward to it and worked hard for it for 38 years.
Now, I definitely don’t feel retired.
I already raised two children of my own who are now adults. I feel stuck because another baby is coming and I don’t see this ending any time soon.
I feel a little better writing this all down. Thanks for reading my pity party rant. I build myself up with self care and knowing that I am a bad ass super G-Ma rockstar.
Are other grandparents here who help raise their grandchildren?
