Which style of monarchy do you prefer?

I agree re the ridiculous bowling and curtseying. Some female celebrities get so far down they are almost crawling on their knees. Sarah Ferguson is one of the worst.

It’s the only soap opera I watch, but I have a monarchist’s heart and a republican head. History and tradition interest me greatly.

I think it should go and a HOS would be perfectly in order. I admired in particular an Irish female President whose name escapes me and I’m sure the cost to us of a royal family is far more than we realise and hidden to some extent. How many castles/palaces do they need? As far as tourism is concerned, France is the winner without a RF.

Whatever contribution my mother paid towards it was worth every penny as she too enjoyed it as a soap opera, but that’s not enough to justify it.
Charles and William are conscientious and seem harmless enough, but rationally it doesn’t make sense.

Well if people were “rushing out to see” some ordinary family going about their day because they like it, it would be stalking or harassment , so why try to gawp at royals. I can sort of understand thousands flocking to see someone like Taylor Swift , who at least has some talent of her own , and not just because her parents were in a certain role. The whole notion of inherited roles is medieval and can’t really be defended because “ some people like it”.

Why should we “ rush out to see” a particular person or family? They aren’t gods. They are just normal, sometimes dysfunctional, ordinary humans who have been forced into this mould. Why issue photos on your birthday? Bizarre. Dressing children in twee sailor outfits and allowing them to be photographed makes me cringe a bit,( Charlotte’s outfits are scrutinised on social media), mapping out their lives in public, almost akin to child abuse in other circumstances.

We don’t have to “rush out to see” a particular person or family. Those who do it, do it because they enjoy it. Should they be denied the right to do so?

IMO we’re lucky one has any expectations of us. Nobody cares whether we do those things or not.
We don’t have to do any of those things, but we could choose to if we wanted.

Certainly people, not just royalty, choose to publish their lives on line e.g. GN thread re bragging about holidays. Or me posting on the thread about what I’m doing today.

People comment, positively or negatively about everything other people do nowadays, not just the RF.

Strange how people on here say that 'Charles is caring' etc. Do they know him, or just know the personality carefully portrayed by the media?

Obviously not very caring about wildlife like foxes and certain birds. Not caring enough about the taxpayers, to ease the burden of the cost of royalty for them. Not very caring about one of his children, enough to see them when they are in London at the same time as himself.

I have no idea as to how caring a person her is, or if he is receiving excellent support from his wife. Really do not care.

Must say I am embarrassed when I see people curtsy or bow to this man and his wife. How silly it makes them all look.

As for people who send cards, flowers and even gifts to this family (one of the very richest in the world), surely their local children's hospital or hospice would be a far better place for these gifts.

Yes, you can assume - correctly - I do not support the idea of a royal family. Get rid of the lot would be my choice. Happy to discuss what should replace it as Head of State.

The job of the monarch is to host banquets, visit worthy venues, be photographed and be seen in public and gawped at as often as possible. They don’t rule in any sense. Yes they meet the pm and sign off legislation, but they can’t influence any of it, it’s all just a bit of a pantomime - they've even got all the costumes.

I think that they can and do influence legislation when it comes to avoiding paying taxes, particularly with reference to the continuing non payment of tax taken in the Duchy of Cornwall.

Who knows what else they have had a few words with the PM about? Their weekly conversations are never ever disclosed.

I can’t see the point of arguing about whether Camilla is Queen or Queen Consort. As others have pointed out, the King’s spouse is normally referred to as Queen.

For me the same problem that always arises about a head of state is what we would get and how we would get it. Elected? We aren’t doing very well with choice of Prime Ministers.
Selected by whom and using what criteria? I’ve read about HoS in other countries, but is their tradition any better than ours?

I know there are always detractors about the value of the monarchy in terms of tourism, but I don’t see people rushing out to see Sunak or Starmer, or even Davey.

I’m not sure why we should fork out for their weddings and coronations.

Personally I don't find KCIII of his time, I'm pretty much the same age as him, and have always found him old-fashioned. Given his fox-hunting background I don't find him (or her) caring. He went to a public school and Cambridge, so I doubt he mixes with many who aren't from a privileged background. But these are my opinions.

Factually the last two coronations each cost just over £20m in today's money. It was hoped this one would be pared back, but estimates are between £50m and £100m. Security is obviously more expensive, but the last 2 royal weddings cost about £30m including security.

His sovereign grantthis year is £86.3m. Next year it will be £124.8m!

We have a need for an unbiased head of state, but I have no use for a hereditary monarch.

I am not sure that is because they do not want the truth, although in some cases that wll be true, but rather as the myths provide a better story.

I’m sure having someone to run his bath is more for convenience than vanity.

They fund their own properties, not Windsor or Buck House etc

I love the new slimmed down version of the royal family, I like Camilla, she seems like a level headed person, very good for Charles (it wasn’t nice what they did to Diana but they have always loved one another & should of married from the get go. I think if we get rid of the monarchy, what has this country got left? It has been eroded enough. I do think though they should fork out for their own properties, out of their own purse & not funded by the taxpayers

I don't know if Charles is a caring man or not, it seems people think he is. But it also seems he has been indulged throughout his adult life; the late Queen herself thought he was extravagant and his lifestyle was not how a 21st century monarch should comport himself.

He also has a temper if things don't go his way.
And who can forget the horrible way he spoke about poor old Nicholas Witchell who was just trying to do his job as a royal correspondent. Not exactly kind.

I prefer the more relaxed monarchy that Charles has introduced. I have nothing against Camilla but somehow when someone mentions the Queen I don't think of her as I am stuck with the Queen being Elizabeth.

I agree with posters who say Elizabeth now Charles are monarchs for their time. I’d have preferred Camilla to be consort
As for her continuing to work whilst supporting Charles during cancer treatment, that’s what happens in marriage or life long relationships

She didn't HAVE to. She is doing her job as many of us do when our spouses are ill.
