Our lawn man has been this morning to do a treatment and said he has just been on holiday to the Lake District.
I immediately said how much I loved that area, which made me think just how many places I love.

When my H took early retirement we had a touring caravan .
Our main leisure activity at that time was walking and previously had spent most of our weekends when he did work in the Peak District and Derbyshire in general which we can reach in under an hour, some parts 30 minutes.

But when he retired the Uk was our oyster , Wales, South West , Yorkshire Dales, the Cotswolds, all brilliant walking areas.

When that all became to much we bought a static caravan I North Wales which we kept until his dementia became obvious.

I have wonderful memories of all those places ,visited time and time again.
Only briefly did we visit Scotland and Eire once but using hotels, again so beautiful.

How lucky we are to live in such a beautiful country and I don’t think we appreciate it a quarter of how we should.

I have lived in East Yorkshire, Lancashire, Newcastle upon Tyne, South Yorkshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, Ribble Valley, North Yorkshire, Hampshire and now back in East. Yorkshire!
So we have enjoyed a lot of the UK!

Every area we have lived has had its charms.

Last weekend we spent in the Yorkshire Dales, we did a fabulous 8 mile walk in sunshine we saw no more than half a dozen people, it was bliss!

We are currently driving down to South Oxfordshire for a few days, we will do some rural walking as well as some of the Oxford Colleges, their gardens are beautiful.

Our next trip away is to Gatehouse of Fleet in Scotland, I know we don’t always get the weather but right now the sun is shining and all is forgiven.

So a huge thumbs up for the UK, a country rich in beauty, history and fabulous people.

Thank you annsixty for a good positive thread!

Our country is indeed a green and pleasant land and we need to treasure it .

We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful country with diverse landscapes and, dare I say, a temperate climate. I love living in north Norfolk.

Germanshepherdsmum have you ever been here?

A little oasis of calm.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 19-Jun-24 13:07:46

No, where is it?

Right in the middle of Norwich but you could be miles away. Plantation Garden on Earlham Rd next to RC Cathedral. Because it is a sunken garden you hear no noise from traffic only birdsong.
Google it for full and interesting history.
We have been visiting for years since volunteers started getting it back to its former glory and. I still meet Norfolk people who never knew it existed! Lovely place for a picnic.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 19-Jun-24 13:17:19

Thanks. I will add it to the places I must visit.

I feel very lucky to live in beautiful North Wales. From my window I can see the mountain and I'm surrounded by lovely countryside.
I have visited many places. Scotland is one of my favourites.
I also like the Cotswolds, the Lake District and the glorious coastline of Cornwall.
annsixty this is such a pleasant thread. It has cheered me up just thinking about all the places I have visited.

This, believe it or not, is in Walsall town centre - Walsall Arboretum. It's a lovely place.

We have booked cottages for the family in a place we love for next summer. Just a week of old-fashioned UK holiday.

Unfortunately it is a lot more expensive than the equivalent in Italy in the beautiful villa with a pool that we have stayed in a few times.
We are tied to school holidays to do this. I think it will be once only, unfortunately.

Not saying it's not a fair price (obviously they charge what people will pay) - just much more than we imagined it would be.

We live in Wales, need I say more.

PamelaJ1 and germanshepherdsmum let me know what you think when you’ve been. 👍

I love these places that are THERE but almost secret. Like Kate1949 photo of Walsall Arboretum.

Yes Primrose. Walsall town centre is quite a tired place these days but this wonderful arboretum is on the edge of the town. There are lovely walks, streams, lakes, acres of lawn, a tennis court, children's play area complete with water features, picnic areas, a very cheap little cafe. Last time we were there there were parakeets in the trees.

I love it when I visit a town or city and discover a lovely park. We have a lot to thank the Victorians for.

We found a lovely one inHastings once when the kids were small. Scarborough has a beauty. Leicester has many lovely parks andWalks and of course, Nottingham.

Lots of our cities have lovely parks - and arboretum too.

Here`s our caravan at our very favourite campsite, Muasdale, just down the road from our lovely Soop.

I know. That’s what I tried to convey.

The most lovely thread! I don't use planes either Luckygirl13 and am so thankful the inspiring landscapes that surround us all.
Off to seek out some Medieval Doom Paintings and Ancient Yew trees this weekend in deepest darkest Gloucestershire!

Interesting to come across this thread.in the last few weeks I have had two cousins come to visit from Vancouver. I live in the Midlands and so did they nearly 50 years ago.
I was a bit worried they would find it drab and dismal in this country, but looking at it through someone else’s eyes changed my mind.
We visited the towns of Leamington Spa, Warwick, Kenilworth and beautiful villages of Warwickshire especially Berkswell. where my cousin married. All lovely places with nice churches, castles and parks. The cities of Coventry and Birmingham with beautiful architecture, museums, cathedrals and hidden gems. We spent 3 days in my brothers home city of Wells with its beautiful Cathedral, Bishops Palace and gardens. The mystical town of Glastonbury with the Abbey and Tor.
They loved it all and didn’t want to leave, they kept saying they didn’t remember the UK being so beautiful and interesting. It honestly left me very proud to live in this amazing country which we often take for granted.

We visited Lancashire, Yorkshire and also Kent last year. All beautiful and diverse. There is nowhere as beautiful as Britain and I’ve been to many other countries. And at this time of year the countryside is at its best. I could never live anywhere else.

Primrose53 Wed 19-Jun-24 22:29:09

Thinking about it I have never been to anywhere in England that I couldn’t find anything positive to say about it. I struggled with Blackpool though.

It might be lovely buildings, churches, parks, modern shopping centres, rivers or canals. There is usually something interesting.

SueDonim Wed 19-Jun-24 22:41:59

1Summer’s post reminds of one of dd2’s friends, when they were about 16. She came to visit from South Africa so we showed her what we thought was the best of Scotland and then we went to the north of England. After a busy and active day in York we relaxed back at our hotel and asked her for her impressions. ‘Well, it’s alright and quite interesting but isn’t there anything modern in this country?’ grin grin grin

Cabbie21 Wed 19-Jun-24 22:52:35

LOL.
Well there are modern buildings of course, but coast and countryside are timeless. Some of our country parks are modern, as they have been created out of former coal mines!

Such a great thread. This is a beautiful country and I love it so much.
I was lucky enough to see much of it back in my camper van days, and although we toured Europe a lot I was always glad to get home . Every part of Britain has glorious areas, from the west country to Scotland, so much of Wales is beautiful too, and the lake district, Northumberland and Yorkshire, East Anglia etc.
I'm so pleased that many of us appreciate it.
