Surprising TV progs enjoyed by very elderly

I was at a residential church conference many years ago when a few of the female attendees wanted to catch that week’s episode of “The Rector’s Wife” (the BBC dramatisation of the book by Joanna Trollope). We sneaked off to the tv lounge where we were joined by a retired clergyman, in his 80s. Should we warn him of the potentially unsuitable content of the episode for a man of his age and profession? We didn’t and he was glued to the screen during the rather, for the time, steamy sexual encounter between the RW and her lover. We women had to suppress our helpless laughter (somewhat unsuccessfully). I guess all our prejudgements were challenged - age, gender, profession … 😂

Crikey … wasn’t expecting this! My husband just came home laughing about this little old lady who said in a broadNorfolk voice “xxx keep cummin round ta see me but all I wanta dew is watch the motorbike racin’ “

It was just a laugh, not intended to be ageist at all but if it makes anybody feel better for suggesting it, then so be it. 😉

My Mum was too. The only sport she followed. When she was young, her parents had a snooker table so she learnt how to play from a young age.

Wrestling was very popular on TV when I was young so it is not surprising that older people still enjoy it.

Slightly off topic. My mum was born in 1931 and so was a child during the war. She was in a nursing home from being 80. When the home put music on, it was invariably Vera Lynn or songs from WW2, or Max Bygraves or similar dreary stuff.

My mum loved Michael Jackson, the Bee Gees, Spandau Ballet and similar stuff. She would never have listened to music from the 1940's.

My friends daughter is an activities coordinator in a care home.
She threw all that stuff out when she started at the home.

Tachinan, I too watch 24 hours in A and E, I think I could probably qualify as a doctor now, I’m still working on the surgical side of things.

I watched 'Naked Attraction' the other night. I can't say that seeing various bits and pieces on display gives me much of a thrill as I was a nurse for many years. Has anyone else seen it?

Naked Attraction is a hoot.

I'm not sure your age determines your choice of TV programmes anymore than it does your choice of book. That said, when we were first married we had a lovely elderly lady living next door, or she was until the wrestling came on and then she really let rip!

I suppose I come into the elderly category. I'm afraid I do find it ageist and somewhat patronising. I hate it when I am told that I am wonderful for my age. No, I am fortunate in family, friends and health , but wonderful I am not. I try to enjoy life .
?Does anyone else feel like this. ?

Goodness - a bit of an ageist thread! But I remember my very aged grandmother (she must have been in her mid-70s at the time) loved the wrestling. I'm a spritely young 82 and love 24Hours in A&E 😉

But it isn't ageist, Taichinan No-one has said anything that implied that they condemned or despised an older person enjoying watching phsical sports on TV. The Op was "surprised", but no worse than that. I would expect more of ageism.

Just a thought older people are not a different race from the rest, they've just lived longer and don't want to be treated any differently in the main.

A very ageist thread. Why shouldn't older people watch things they enjoy ?
What do you think they should watch ? I am 86 and watch a varied amount of programmes including sport, arts, drama,films. I watch what I enjoy, which could be different from what you enjoy.

Jaxjacky I also went to charity wrestling (and boxing) with my dad to help with the raffle. Actually I never liked either (though liked the "event") - still don't.

As a young teenager my Dad, who was in the Lions Club, used to take me to the wrestling, I helped sell raffle tickets for the Lions. I got to meet a lot of the wrestlers, with Dad of course!
