A little prick in bed!

Friday 2am turned over in bed felt a little prick on side of tummy. Ignored it and went back to sleep. Got up in morning and I had a lot of pain and noticed a thumb size red mark which was only slightly itchy. Then I noticed a dead spider in my bed.

Fast forward 4 days I have a rash 6 inches by 4 inches hot and painful. Despite using antihistamine tablets and cream it’s turned into cellulitis. Now on antibiotics which are causing side effects.

The moral of the story please be careful of spiders.

You poor thing Whethertomorrow that’s just awful. It must be really bad to need antibiotics. I hope you pick up very soon. I always turn the pillows over to check under, and shake the duvet, but I know that’s no guarantee 🥴. Are you in the UK?

I was bitten by a spider on my hand when I reached for a towel on the edge of the bath (I was not in the bath!). There was a very sharp sting, I shook my hand and the spider fell off. Soon after my hand went quite numb but this wore off after a while. However, some weeks later, I had what I assumed might be tennis elbow, but I think it was probably the spider poison that had settled in the joint. I hadn't done anything which would have given me tennis elbow. I was talking to someone a bit later who had had the same experience. FYI the spider was a large fat one with short legs.

Can quite believe this. I think Iodine was put on just about everything in the 30s!

I am really sorry to hear about your spider bite and am glad you are slowly getting better. It is good we have modern medicine to look after us. Just wondering what folk would have done time past with spider bites? What would they have put on them or bee stings for example? What were the country ways?

Mum was bitten by a spider when little in the 30's she said Iodine was put on it

Whethertomorrow, what size was the spider and can you describe it? I need to know what kind to be scared of.

My mother used to stay with us when recuperating after hospital stays and stripping her bed on the morning I was to return her home I found a huge dead spider between the sheets. I never told her obviously but I have never recovered from the fear.

Goodness Whethertomorrow. I've been suffering from an allergic reaction to some bites that appeared one morning but nothing as bad as yours.

Strange smell in the garden. Then my husband noticed a dead fox. Poor thing. Hope it wasn’t my left over chicken that finished him. So sad

OmaLoocie Sun 21-Jul-24 16:51:34

This reminds me of something that happened to me whilst gardening a few years ago. I felt a tickle in my bra, thought nothing of it and carried on digging. That night as I undressed to go to bed, I took my bra off and a very disgruntled earwig flew out of my bra and landed on the bathroom floor. Not sure who was more horrified, it or me! 😄

Buttonjugs, those spindly spiders kill all the others, so we don't discourage them. We call them rafter spiders here. Some call them cave spiders. I read last year that even house spiders bite and they've discovered they carry dangerous bacteria. There had to be a reason for genetic anxieties imo.

Just reading of a young chap bitten by spider in Spain, small prick, he lost ends of fingers through poisonous bite. Not cheerful sorry

I’m on antibiotics and it is healing slowly. The infection spread to about 10 inches by 4. The original bite is a black spot and a deep purple splodge.

I love spiders and never kill one but after this I’m very wary.

I’m sorry if I’ve started people worrying but this bite is just horrid.

We were walking in countryside 10 or 12 yrs ago now. Got back to the car and thought my thumb was slightly itchy. Time we drove the 90 minutes home my whole hand and arm had blown up that tight I thought my skin was going to burst like a sausage in a frying pan. Up to A and E to be told it was a spider bite, they could see the 2 fang marks on my thumb. 10 days on antibiotics and steroids as well as an extra antihistamine help the swelling come down and to stop any potential infection. Not sure which was worse the pain from the swelling or the itching, but was far to sore to rub or scratch. The only creepy crawlie that freaks me out on this planet is a spider.

How a grasshopper landed on top of my duvet I shall never know. I carefully grabbed him and out of the window he went.

My spider bite, also woke in bed by an itch, this was the result, I was given antibiotics and steroids, might be worth a visit to your GP

Oh my word you poor thing

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS check bed before getting in.
Use only white bedding to aid inspection!

I shared my bath with a huge hairy one. I didn't notice till he was going down the plughole. I can only think he'd been hiding behind the bottle of shampoo behind me, slipped, fell in and drowned or maybe I'd leaned back and squished him. I've got one of those boxes on a stick with a sliding door to trap them, I'm a bit more brave now but they still give me the heebygeebies

pably15 Sun 21-Jul-24 14:21:37

meant to say, next day o h found the spider on top of the white electric socket it's legs hanging over the end, in the bedroom

pably15 Sun 21-Jul-24 14:17:02

I'm absolutely terrified of the eight legged creatures, and like Shinamae I always pull back the duvet and check my pillows befor getting into bed, I also keep a spider spray in the bed room, wipe the door and window frame and skirting ocasionally with pepermint oil....they don't like pepermint or lavander...One night as I was going to bed...this big black spider climbed up the side of the bed ..ran across the cover and down the other side..and ( not joking,,) chased me out the room...well I ran out the room...screaming..o h came upstairs....couldn't find it....so I took a duvet and pillow downstairs and slept on the sofa in the living room..whethertomorrow, I really hope you feel better soon...x

Whethertomorrow

I’m feeling so grotty that I tried to make it light hearted.

Glad I fooled some of you.

You certainly fooled me now I’m too scared to go to bed 😫

You fooled me too. So much so that i had to Google to see if spiders do bite.
Calm down Grans.
How many UK spiders are actually dangerous?

Amongst the scaremongering we should always remember that spider bites are incredibly rare in the UK. The vast majority of us will never get bitten by a spider

HeavenLeigh Sun 21-Jul-24 13:17:24

When I saw the title I actually thought I was on mumsnet! But when I read further I was horrified that’s awful for you, I have had cellulitis mine was caused by horsefly I was walking through long grass. I’m immunosuppressive so was given antibiotics quite quickly. I’m actually going round my house after I’ve finished my cuppa with my cobweb brush. I hope you recover very very soon sounds nasty

I put my bare foot into my slipper and felt as though had stood on a drawing pin. I pulled my foot out and a dead spider was attached to my big toe!
