A little prick in bed!

I was bitten by a spider on my hand when I reached for a towel on the edge of the bath (I was not in the bath!). There was a very sharp sting, I shook my hand and the spider fell off. Soon after my hand went quite numb but this wore off after a while. However, some weeks later, I had what I assumed might be tennis elbow, but I think it was probably the spider poison that had settled in the joint. I hadn't done anything which would have given me tennis elbow. I was talking to someone a bit later who had had the same experience. FYI the spider was a large fat one with short legs.

You poor thing Whethertomorrow that’s just awful. It must be really bad to need antibiotics. I hope you pick up very soon. I always turn the pillows over to check under, and shake the duvet, but I know that’s no guarantee 🥴. Are you in the UK?

'Rentokil' say there's been a 65% increase between 2022 & 2023. They come back with your suitcase here, when you've been abroad. And they have become resistant to some pesticides.
There's plenty of advice on the Web if you just Google the crucial word.

Friday 2am turned over in bed felt a little prick on side of tummy. Ignored it and went back to sleep. Got up in morning and I had a lot of pain and noticed a thumb size red mark which was only slightly itchy. Then I noticed a dead spider in my bed.

Fast forward 4 days I have a rash 6 inches by 4 inches hot and painful. Despite using antihistamine tablets and cream it’s turned into cellulitis. Now on antibiotics which are causing side effects.

The moral of the story please be careful of spiders.

Ooh you have my sympathy. I scratched my leg on a stick in the garden, spent 6 weeks in hospital, then months of physio as I had to learn to walk again. Hope you are soon on the mend 💐

Yes, Whethertomorrow, I had exactly the same experience with a spider. I first thought I had burnt myself on the top of my hot water bottle (unlikely)....I was reading at the time and just tied to ignore it. It increased in itching and started to hurt. I put my arm under the cold tap to try to sooth it. It was a red and swollen patch about 2 inches long. I put some anti histamine cream on it as it had become increasingly sore and sensitive to the bed sheet and wrapped a soft piece of material around it. Next morning, very painful. When I made the bed, I noticed a few tiny spots of blood, and further down a very small squashed spider only the size of a small fly. It took a week to clear up and was really painful. Yes , now a bed check at night. I have never experienced this before in my 80 years and various encounters with spiders. Complete overhall of all bedroom furniture and application of much peppermint oil etc.

this morning I decided to paint the fence, so up to the hut I went for the paint, I opened the door and cautiously peep in
there they were...two of the big black long legged beasts..one in the top right hand corner...the other in the top left...the legs were over an inch....not joking....and they could run...I came back to the house for the spider repellent spray and the kitchen spray with bleach, I sprayed them with the repellent, they ran...like athletes...this spraying was all done from the open door...no way would I go in the hut...I sprayed them with the bleachy kitchen spray, they have now departed this earth...and I will never go into that hut again....I've been itchy ever since...

O.M.G! Not usually afraid to kill spiders but might well check everything in future.Bit harder though as my glasses arent brilliant & have dark sheets😬😧

I get fed up with spiders appearing in my bath. I found that a rhubarb scented Method spray seems to deter them so I spray the bath and surrounding areas with it.

Many years ago my husband found a bright red spider in our bathroom. He never used to hurt them so he did what he always did and picked it up to take it outside. The spider bit his thumb enough for my husband to yelp and throw the spider down the loo. Within a few minutes had hand had swelled like a balloon and was stone cold to the touch. We called the local A&E who advised us to call London Zoo to see if they knew what species it was, they wanted us to take it to them which obviously we couldn’t. They couldn’t tell us what it was. It took a week for my husbands hand to return to normal size. 😱

not a spider, but yesterday I had washed a sheet ,when I brought it in I felt a sharp sting on my arm..I shook the sheet and what I thought was a big round black spider fell out and then flew away...so I think it must have been a bee, but it was not the kind I see flying about the clover in the garden...this one was big, and I didn't see any yellow stripes on it...just black. maybe I just didn't see the yellow stripes because I panicked. It left a red mark which grew in size to 2inch long and 3 1/2inch wide...it wasn't very sore, just red...I put some hydrocortisone insect bite and sting cream on and vinegar just to make sure...today it's still big but fading....make sure to check washing when bringing it in..

misadventure, if that's what a spider bite can do it's frightening...
