Cancelling a Hospital Appointment

I think I may know why a number of hospitals have a lot of missed appointments. I tried to cancel one yesterday on behalf of someone who is too ill to attend. Phoned number on letter x 3 times. Recorded message said they are busy and rang off after 10 mins. Phoned again this morning, same. Phoned PALs. They gave me an appointments number and outpatients number. Appointments number not answering. Outpatients gave me a number for the office of the department I needed. They picked up and an actual person said that they would pass the message on. I think that's about 8 calls, at least 35 mins waiting time. Not really surprising that there's a fair number of people who are unable to wade through. It's such basic stuff and will have a massive effect on the patient through put.

I've had a similar problem. I'd got a specialist appointment at a hospital an hour away. I was then able to book another more local. So I phone first hospital to cancel. Spoke to a lovely lady who thanked me and cancelled my appointment.

I then received a letter informing me I'd missed the appointment at the first hospital. They made me a new appointment. Another phone call, apologies blah blah , cancelled , definitely cancelled yet I received another letter telling me I'd missed the appointment.

It was eventually sorted but there are 2 missed hospital appointments which actually weren't.

I got a reminder by text and an option to cancel which I did within a few minutes of receiving the text. A bounce back message said it was too later for the automatic system and to ring XXX. I had the same results - number just rang continuously with no one answering. In the end I gave up.

I rang the x Ray department, explained, and a letter came out two days later with an appointment one week after the original one.

Some appointment-booking offices give you an email option - as long as you give them minimum 48-hours notice. But not many do have that facility.

Appointments handled by booking offices clearly don't have a sufficient number of staff - I don't think I have ever been able to get through to cancel or change an appointment.

What I dislike is when you are asked to leave your name and telephone number - we "aim to get back to you with xx hours". Which means remembering to cart your mobile around with you for the rest of the day.

On one occasion, I spoke to someone who said they would confirm a particular appointment, but they didn't know "when". Fine, said I - can you leave a message if I don't happen to pick-up. "No, we are not allowed to leave messages because of patient-privacy". I argued that it was my mobile which is answered by me. It cut no ice. They did call back - I was in the shower. They did leave a message - for me to call them back again. Which I did... only to be told by recorded voice that all the lines were "busy right now" so please leave your name and telephone number and we will get back to you...

It's a bloody stupid system.

I get texts reminding me with the option to cancel from hospital and GP.
