J.D.Vance causes a stir with this comment resurfacing.
My DD is childfree as they call it now and perfectly happy (without cats).
Wouldn’t have missed out on children myself but what are your thoughts?
Love my cat and it’s an insult to them…

Sorry, I see we are on the Cat Lady thread. Was distracted by the CNN link (above).

Your Whiteness will not save you from what the patriarchy has in store for you

Great quote.
Thanks for the link Wyllow

As a woman unable to have children I find his comment very hurtful and insulting. I am now 64, have worked fulltime all my life and basically just got on with it.
Have put up with many comments from people who think they have the right to judge you.
Heaven help America if Trump and Vance are elected ,small minded and dangerous

Callistemon213 Sun 28-Jul-24 11:41:52

Sorry, sazz1 I realise you are quoting someone else.
If you put ^^ around the quoted words it turns them into italics to make it clearer. clearer

Children are a personal choice.

Not always
However, having a cat is.

sazz1 Sun 28-Jul-24 11:38:34

I struggle to understand how a powerful country like the USA can have 2 pensioners as previous presidents.
They are quite a way infront of us medically in surgery etc, but miles behind with 1950s ideology eg banning abortion.
The comment about cats and childless women just validates this old fashioned ideology.
Children are a personal choice.
For people who are unable to conceive this comment is grossly offensive and hurtful.
Strange country with some areas very advanced and others stuck in a timewarp

See this CNN video of voters in a swing state - reasons for cautious optimism as regards voting for Harris.

It seems worth reiterating that the majority of white women who vote do so for the Republicans (it averages out, ironically, at 52% - 48% over the past 20 years)

Here's some recent info re this.

White women voted:
In 2016:
45% Democrat / 47% Republican

Midterms (2018):
50% Democrat / 48% Republican

Then, in 2020:
45% Democrat / 53% Republican

Midterms in 2022:
44% Democrat / 55% Republican

casdon. It’s true that the Electoral College amplifies white votes, and that most swing states have around 85% white populations. The one exception, due to demographic change, is Georgia, hence all Trump’s sound and fury there in 2020.

But that doesn’t mean all swing states will vote Republican, because white people vote Democrat too (education is a big indicator of party allegiance) and the Electors pledge to represent the popular vote in their state (Faithless electors are still theoretically possible, but I don’t think it happens in practice)

It’s a dreadful racist system, just the same, and was deliberately designed to be so. I’m astounded that it hasn’t been ended.

Wyllow3 Sat 27-Jul-24 22:39:16

Hilary Clinton won more actual votes, but Trump won the election in 2016.

Casdon Sat 27-Jul-24 20:08:16

*Casdon*, yes, because between 90 and 95 percent of Black women, and between 65 and 75 percent of Latinas vote Democrat.

Black men also lean heavily Democrat, and Latino men are still doing so, but only by about 60% - 40%.

That’s the main reason Republican States make it so hard for Black and Latin communities to vote, and it’s why there is so much Democrat emphasis on getting their vote out.

I think I’ve grasped what you were getting at Siope, that because of the electoral college system of voting for the president, the republicans will win states where there is a predominantly white population. So although overall in the US more people vote Democrat, the republicans could still win if they win enough electoral colleges?

Vance sounds an ignorant pain in the backside. Why should a woman have a child after being forced or raped or too young to parent. Some inadequate men think they own women.

M0nica Sat 27-Jul-24 19:49:54

But white women are only part of the female population. 45% are of other ethnicities and mixed ethnicities.

I find that utterly shocking!

I thought that was a scary statistic, but I found this, which is somewhat more reassuring. It doesn’t differentiate by colour, but by a number of other categorisations, and unsurprisingly overall men are more likely to vote Republican.

Outside the large city’s generally the US is much more conservative than in the UK so it’s not a surprise to me, whether they will vote for Trump is another matter. They are not going to vote for Harris just because she a woman, the policies have got to be right.

But why?

I don't know much about Vance's personal history - as far as I'm aware, he's not a pussy-grabber nor philanderer - but his attitude towards women is cavalier to say the least.

I understand that some women are in favour of the more 'traditional' type of marriage where the man is the head of he household, earns the bread, makes all the decisions, with the woman staying at home to raise the children - but do they really buy into the idea that they should accept being a punch-bag for a violent husband because that's better for the children? Or that if they, or their daughters, are raped they should be condemned to continue the pregnancy regardless of their trauma and feelings?

As for Trump - just how does he fit into the 'family values' picture - let alone the God-fearin' storyline?

I wish one of his and Vance's admirers on here would explain it because I can't rationalise it.

Here's something else to ponder: Do Rapists Have the Right to Parent Children Conceived in Rape?

verdict.justia.com/2012/12/12/do-rapists-have-the-right-to-parent-children-conceived-in-rape

I think a lot of young women here in the UK will be forever grateful that they don't live in the US.

Wyllow3 and others -
and I haven't followed this very closely but it's not just abortion that's the issue - it seems to me that it's basically anything to do with reproduction.

Alabama clinics for example, had stopped IVF services after a court decided that "embryos are children" - with all the messy stufv (legally) that that entailed) and then there was a massive scramble to pass a law to make it OK to use IVF again.

He, like Trump, is a very dangerous man who would like to take women back to pre Victorian times.

Why oh why, would any self respecting person, especially women, put these two in charge of their country!

I did suggest adopting a pair of rescue kittens I saw on FB at the rescue centre.
However, DH said he'd leave home if I did.

so when do the kittens arrive? grin

Next week! 🐱🐱

I haven't told him yet.
They'll love him (cats always do!).
