Tell them you were providing end of life care for a relative. You now wish to continue after your career pause and have been re-assessing your skillset.
I know someone who used that to cover a six month gap in her cv for personal reasons. The interviewer just said "Sorry for your loss, That must have been tough."
More or less a conversation stopper for any more akward questions on that line.
No do not lie this is a dreadful idea!

My daughter once was interviewing someone who was a “wildcard” when she asked him why his degree was a 2,2 he said he had had a wild 4 years at university and had done as little work as he could get away with and was currently regretting his behaviour, my daughter was much the same so she offered him the job, he was a good hire!
