Morning all
I am going on a 5 day coach trip leaving tomorrow until Friday return.
I live in East Anglia, where the weather has been a tad warm and sunny of late.
We have a 3 day itinerary of visits to Hadrians wall, Holy Island, and Durham.
I have left it until today to pack, usual predicament with our climate,I have checked weather forecasts in the area.
Please can any Nortumberland grans help, is it wet, cold, windy in these areas, I am wafting about in thin summer dresses here with no idea what to take, have to travel light on coach
Thanyou in advance.

Beautiful part of the UK. When we have been there in thr past we've experienced very little wet weather but near thr coast the wind can be quite pronounced so I would take a thicker cardie or similar as you don't want to be uncomfortable. Like others have said I think layers will fit the bill. I do hope you enjoy your time there,x
Waterproofs, a woollie jumper, jeans.
Leave your shorts and swimsuit at home. Sensible shoes too. Better to be comfortable than glamorous.
Enjoy yourself. It's beautiful.
On 2nd thoughts, shorts could be handy and a sunhat, just in case....

Adding to this - we had a great time in Northumberland and although the weather wasn't brilliant we didn't actually get rained on. Best day was the last - we were staying in Cullercoats on the coast, and took the Metro all the way to South Shields with the intention of taking the ferry to North Shields and the getting lunch in Tynemouth. We did this except that lunch became early dinner because we discovered a fantastic Roman complex in South Shields. It's huge, apparently acted as a granary supplying the eastern forts on Hadrian's Wall, and some of the buildings have been reconstructed; not sure how they got that past the planners and archaeological guardians, but glad they did because they're so good and so much more evocative than just looking at stones in grass. The fort is called Arbeia, it's free (though donations welcome), and I can thoroughly recommend it.
Oh I’ve been to that. A friend who lives in Seaham took me there. It’s a little gem isn’t it. I love Cullercoats too. There was a famous artist that used to paint there but I can’t remember their name. It’s why we made a point of visiting it.

Good to hear Northumberland didn’t disappoint, downtoearth. I hope you got to look at the Gertrude Jekyll Garden on Lindesfarne - it’s a joy. And next time you go (for there’s bound to be a next time!) don’t miss Cragside!
Pleased you had a good time. The weather has been good this last week very little rain but the wind has arrived over the last couple of days so beach walks are challenging. Sand does sting when being blown horizontally.
So pleased you enjoyed your visit downtoearth and that the weather was kind. We go again soon. I always feel as if I’m coming home when I go to Northumberland as quite a few relatives are/were from that area. I love it.
Thanks for 'reporting' back, I am glad you had a lovely time. We love it up here
Morning all, thankyou all for your advice on things to take.
Arrived home last night after a lovely trip, weather really kind to us, I was able to pack exactly what I needed from the advice you gave.
Northumberland is beautiful, we enjoyed a day in Durham, people so warm and friendly, Hadrians wall amazing, good news the beautiful sycamore tree brutally cut down has started to sprout new buds and leaves.
Alnwick castle is beautiful, lots if entertaining side shows there.
Holy Island and Lindisfarne captured my imagination from the books by LJ Ross set in this part of the world, where exactly as I imagined.
As someone upthread mentioned not to mention how much I enjoyed my visit just keep this amonst ourselves,
and I only met one whippet patiently waiting for his mum outside the ladies on Lindisfarne, and no flat caps at all.
Hope all due to visit have a wonderful time, beautiful scenery, lovely warm people, and a safe journey
Lovely and warm today. Forecast is OK this week. Lightweight waterproof and cardigan/sweater just in case. Of course we are a hardy lot up here!!
Do not go anywhere in the British Isles at any time of year without a rain coat and a nice thick woolie!
If you don't need them, well and good, but if you don't have them with you, you assuredly will need them!
Enjoy Northumberland, and give my love to Hadrian's Wall.
We are there next week and will pack fir all eventualities especially if there is an easterly wind ! It is beautiful but since CoVID has become more popular with lots of dogs!
It is my happy place !!
My daughter and family moved to Northumberland just over two years ago. I have visited in all seasons and haven't found the weather very much different from where I live (Surrey). Layering of course and take sensible shoes for all the beautiful walks.
It's 23°C here today (mid Northumberland) but with a light breeze. I think the layering advice is good. It might be cooler at night than you're used to though. Pyjamas!
We are off to Northumberland tomorrow so this thread is brilliantly timed, thank you! I shall take some dresses but also cardis and a jacket, just in case. Met Office says sunny and mild for the next few days with winds from the south and west - fingers crossed that doesn't change.
24c today. Rarely below 20c recently, but bring a cardigan, or light jacket just in case.
I live there …..weather at the moment is really good …. But would advise a fold up
Mac , maybe trousers and a jumper as well as a lighter dress !
I always remember stopping in Morpeth, with my teens, on our way to the Edinburgh Festival. They had just come back from a camping holiday in Portugal. A local looked at them and said ti her friend " they must be southerners, they've got a tan!"
My visions of Northumberland are from the Lorna Hill 'Marjorie' books as read as a girl!
Freedom and riding ponies along huge windswept beaches 😃
Don’t forget your flat cap and piece of string for your whippet

I,live in Northumberland and usually wear dresses July and August then usually back to trousers it is a little bit cooler than down South but we still get some lovely weather .

I'm taking notes here too as I have finally booked our holiday(see "North of England" thread) for next month and I'm anticipating cold and wet. Like downtoearth I think it will be a different kind of cold to what I'm used to.
We shall be flying over so will be limited with what we can take, too. (No wellies)
I was just wondering this morning whether to wear hiking boots to travel in....
Can you canny Northern Grannies give me an idea of what sort of weather to expect in September? Aran sweaters or bathing costumes for the beach?
If you’re flying am I right in thinking that you have to remove your shoes at some point and walking boots would be a pain to take off and put back on again ( I haven’t flown for a long time though).
Will come back and let you all know how my visit went.
I live in Northumberland. Normally we dont get much rain BUT this year weve had loads. Weatherwise it is mixed and today is overcast but couple of days ago was very warm. We dont get the humidity thankfully. Overnight temperatures ok for sleeping. Im sure you will enjoy Northumberland - it is a huge county.
