Breakfasts in hotels

I’m going away for a few days with my husband. It’s a place we go on special occasions. The hotel we stay in does a glorious breakfast. Fruit, yogurts, toasts, breads, cereals, pastries and jans. Then they do a really good cooked option. Generally we both just have the cooked option as it’s plenty. Other people seem to have loads of food before the cooked option.

My question is..is it extremely wrong to discretely put a couple of pastries or some bread, cheese and fruit in a zip lock bag so that we could have that for lunch? Or is it a complete no no 🙃 it’s not a budget hotel, we stay for dinner etc just wondered on others thoughts. Normally we would just buy a sandwich from M&S to share, which we may still do..

In a pocket in the dressing gown? 😮

More efficient to drape a big fluffy white towel over it.

Wrong, and clearly stated in many Hotels.

Dearie me, I'm going to need one hell of a big bag if I've got to fit a table in it too! gringringrin

Never.

For those who feel it is OK to take from the buffet, why don’t you ask before you do it? You probably know what the answer would be!

Actually, yes I really do.
At our recent hotel stay in Italy they were happy for guests to take a small plate of pastries or cakes.
Since the guests were carrying the plates quite openly, the staff, including the manager and the receptionist (for those who walked past her with their plates)
could easily have put a stop to it, but they didn’t.
Perhaps we were just in a good hotel, even though it wasn’t 5*.

I don’t know what they did with the leftovers, but was always plenty of food, whether we arrived at rope drop or half an hour before the end.
I wonder if that is because of all those on MissInterpreted’s
moral high ground

I’ve noticed the hotel do ‘small plates’ now so if the weather is nice I think we’ll do that for lunch now on the terrace to enjoy with some cocktails 🍹

So are you now hinting that you’ll have to take an even bigger handbag so you can steal crockery as well as mountains of food from the continental breakfast section? You really are shameless JaneJudge 😆

Very funny 😂

You eat as much as you can manage during the mealtime. Whatever is still left on the buffet, is the property of the establishment. In my book, taking it off the premises is stealing.

I love small plates. Brilliant!

I can eat what is put before me if I must eat away from home.

Good luck finding a lovely meal.

I’ve found this thread a mixture of emotions tbh 😂🎉

The OP, Jane, posted way back on page 5 that she is going to buy a sandwich at lunch!

Sorted!

It never ceases to amaze me that so many on GN don’t bother to read what others have said, but just plough on with their own, much duplicated, opinions.

I bet she wishes she had never bothered seeking advice on this.

I only ever eat the continental, don't think I'm going to take an FEB away in my handbag grin

Dianehillbilly1957 Mon 12-Aug-24 17:27:29

It's a shame if much of this food is thrown away, such a waste. Maybe take a plastic container and ask if they mind you taking a couple of items with you. You're probably paying for it anyway.

JdotJ Mon 12-Aug-24 17:23:45

I'd take fruit or croissants for lunch and think nothing of it.
It's all accounted for in the price you pay for staying in such a place

You need to ask yourself do you eat all this food for breakfast at home, I doubt it. I think it’s rude taking food away, people tend to stuff their faces while at hotels at breakfast time, plates piled high no wonder there are a lot of obese people.

Do you think people are obese because they take an apple and croissant from the buffet breakfast ?

MissAdventure Mon 12-Aug-24 17:12:34

MissAdventure as guests it's not our job to prevent waste. Hotels will be well aware of the proclivities of the greedier guest and it will be costed accordingly. So all us more moderate and polite guests end up paying more.

Us moderate and polite guests will pay more, whether people take a trough full of food and it it off a plate, or pile it up in their handbags, presumably?

MissInterpreted Mon 12-Aug-24 17:10:14

There we are up on that moral high ground again...hmm

MissAdventure Mon 12-Aug-24 17:04:28

I do like rules to make sense.
I also think it's everyone's mission to reduce food waste.

So we have the idea that just one banana is OK, from people who find it disgusting and geedy, and would never do it.
We have people being asked to put food back- so what poor sod will end up with that?

Lots of people have said they eat a big breakfast when they're away, to tide them over until dinner.
Is that greedy?

JaneJudge Mon 12-Aug-24 16:56:29

I do hope my Mother hasn’t read this thread 😂🙈

Thank you LauraNorder for your kind words x

MissAdventure Mon 12-Aug-24 16:55:29

And it must be OK to serve up rolls, etc to the next people in the queue, or with the next meal, too, it seems.
