Breakfasts in hotels

I’m going away for a few days with my husband. It’s a place we go on special occasions. The hotel we stay in does a glorious breakfast. Fruit, yogurts, toasts, breads, cereals, pastries and jans. Then they do a really good cooked option. Generally we both just have the cooked option as it’s plenty. Other people seem to have loads of food before the cooked option.

My question is..is it extremely wrong to discretely put a couple of pastries or some bread, cheese and fruit in a zip lock bag so that we could have that for lunch? Or is it a complete no no 🙃 it’s not a budget hotel, we stay for dinner etc just wondered on others thoughts. Normally we would just buy a sandwich from M&S to share, which we may still do..

😆

Waitrose or Tesco? 🥪

Calendargirl Sat 10-Aug-24 19:38:17

Tesco.

Haven’t stayed in a hotel for a long time but I’m someone who doesn’t usually eat breakfast ( can’t really face food at that time of day) and tend to eat far less than most people anyway so, given that I’ve paid for breakfast yes I do take away food to eat later. Eg a croissant, yoghurt, bit of fruit.

I fully agree with everyone who suggested JaneJudge asks the hotel if she could pay extra to pack for midday.

This is a no no for me, but I don't really matter!

JaneJudge Sat 10-Aug-24 19:41:41

It’s either Tesco express or M&S I’m afraid

Well, I've just booked an overnight stay in a hotel for my daughter's wedding party, and after reading through this, I think I'll take an extra large handbag with me to the buffet breakfast! wink

Don't tell anyone on GN or they'll call you greedy, undignified... or a ... thief 😂😂😂

Don't even think about putting a kiwi fruit in your handbag ....

Jaxjacky Sat 10-Aug-24 21:24:34

If you take a yoghurt, do you take a spoon too? (Asking for a friend)or do you go tooled up? 🙂

It’s not something I would ever do. It’s really penny pinching isn’t it?

Anyway surely one of the pleasures of a holiday, especially when we’re abroad, is choosing a nice restaurant for lunch, ideally outside in a shady spot, overlooking the sea or in a pretty hotel garden ?

I would look for one serving fresh fish and a salad.
There’s no way I would fancy opening a bag and sitting on a bench somewhere munching on food we had filched from the breakfast table !

But, how to eat a kiwi without a plate and cutlery!? shock wink

Also the yoghurt thieves ! How do they manage ? Maybe something like this www.amazon.co.uk/Stainless-Portable-Multitool-Detachable-Tableware/dp/B07ZYCJG9P/ref=asc_df_B07ZYCJG9P?hvlocphy&linkCode=df0&hvnetw=o&hvlocint&th=1&hvdev=c&hvadid=80745477544516&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&tag=gransnetforum-21&hvtargid=pla-4584345023161545

Goodness me. Talk about pearl-clutching. I should think several on here have strangled themselves with them.

I eat very little and my first meal of the day is usually brunch. So I usually just have coffee, then yogurt if available. MrJ always has cereals followed by toast and eggs so no change for him on holiday. There is no way I would take any food away with me. I do wonder how much of these extras are actually not eaten and left in a bin somewhere. I've never understood why people go to a restaurant and ask for a doggy bag to take away their left overs. That seems a very strange thing to do.

Totally agree.
I don’t eat breakfast at home. Far too early. On holiday I enjoy the choice on offer that I didn’t have to cook. Something small like scrambled egg, only one and a grilled tomato. Lunch in the harbour is the thing followed by a nap and late dinner at my advanced age.

Can't see a problem myself , we've done it in the past. I usually take fruit etc for the room.

Redhead56 Sun 11-Aug-24 01:44:35

We occasionally go away for weekends sporting events or meet ups with friends or relatives. We stay overnight at hotels have a meal drinks etc save driving straight home. I don’t eat a big breakfast so I pick a selection of fruits pastries etc for our journey home we paid good money for it so why not.

A recent short stay in a mid range chain hotel saw me asking the restaurant manager who was seating guests if it was OK to take a banana to eat later. Her response? Of course! Just saying.

Enjoy your holiday Jane.

PamelaJ1 Sun 11-Aug-24 07:11:45

I presume that the hotel has to average general portions depending on its diners.
Just like a plane does to work out its load.
If everyone traveling was overweight it would make travel much more expensive. I think that the airlines used to work at about a 10st. average. Probably more these days.
If everyone helped themselves to lunch at the breakfast bar it would throw the hotels budget out completely.
I will continue to eat what I like at a help yourself buffet but will never take anything without asking.

I bet you wish you’d never asked, JaneJudge grin. Enjoy your break!

To be fair, so many posters haven't actually been unpleasant to JaneJudge. What they have actually said is, I wouldn't do it in answer to the question, is it wrong? There will always be the odd one or two people who want to be personally rude or nasty on GN, but this thread isn't full of them.

I did once go back and nick an apple from a hotel buffet - after we’d just checked out! It was in central Krakow, where we were just going on a horse-drawn tour of the city.
The apple was for the horse.
He enjoyed it!
