I found this in my emails from Boots today.
Surprise... Advent Calendars have arrived!

Then on FB I learned that there’s only 13 Mondays before Christmas.

DD was in The Range last week, and they had Christmas trees nd swimming pools side by side.

We've been getting emails from the National Trust since at least June about their Christmas lights displays!!

I was offered a choice of charity Christmas cards at church yesterday…

Yes I do think we should make the most of every day, enjoying what each brings. But I also like having something to look forward to. I subscribe to a yarn Advent Calendar which started earlier in the year. I get 3 20g yarn minis every month, put them away then open one each day of December. I couldn’t afford to buy them all in one go and it supports a small yarn dyeing business. I also have the pleasure of deciding I’m going to make in the new year.
The children in Scotland went back to school a few weeks ago. # just saying.

Oh how I hate this rush to get to mid winter and the dreaded
(for many) Christmas season I m enjoying summer I m enjoying just the daily plod but in a bit of warmth, I don’t want to see, hear or think anything about winter or Christmas. So you can all rush out and spend your money in the over priced commercial drive of advent calendars and tinsel and mincemeat and I will sit in my deckchair amongst my flowers with a glass of cider in my hand and listen to the birds
Cheers folks

I hate hearing seeing Xmas items too early it makes me despair. Let us enjoy our seasons and our holidays without moving too quickly. I tend to avoid shopping so much that I am in danger of missing Xmas altogether .😂

MissAdventure Thu 29-Aug-24 16:17:07

I can't stand all this christmas tripe before the school holidays are even done.
No wonder people are stressed out by the time it arrives, and it's simply a means of squeezing more money from consumers.

Advent calendars out in Asda sad

Athrawes Thu 29-Aug-24 12:17:48

I can't bear it! It's NOT Christmas yet, it is still SUMMER!

BigBopper Thu 29-Aug-24 12:16:31

There are 17 Mondays to Christmas.

AreWeThereYet Thu 29-Aug-24 12:12:11

No time for Christmas in this house. We're still enjoying what we have of the Summer. Then we'll enjoy Autumn, with a nod to Halloween which we don't really get involved with anymore.

Christmas will start sometime in October when we make puddings and cakes but will then stop until December.

LaCrepescule Thu 29-Aug-24 12:03:00

No don’t need it so am ignoring it. Consumed-driven obsession with Christmas is pathetic and not worth our time. It should be all about the birth of Christ but it isn’t anymore so personally but we glad if it just didn’t happen.

I think FB tells fibs Mollygo there are 17 Mondays from today 🙂

I'm thinking of advent early this year as I'm busy making a nativity scene for my GC which I intend to give as an advent gift packed in a set of advent calender boxes which previously had toiletries in. I need to complete it to give in early October for them to have it for advent. As usual these projects always take more time than I hope but I'm enjoying the process.

How lovely! Until this year I knitted a Nativity set every year for 5 or 6 years - the first for Gdcs, others for their school Christmas raffles. I usually started in about June though - they are very time consuming!

I hate the way that we are pushed into looking too far ahead and not enjoying the moment. I will not be buying advent calendars and ignore endless christmas adverts etc. Those that like them or have reasons to do early shopping , thats fine but it is so sad with the children I think. The excitement and pleasure of anticipation for a week before something arrives is gone and it is all just commercial. Well I intend to enjoy scuffing through leaves, bonfire night and various other autumny things, getting conkers etc etc before I even consider christmas stuff. IIt seems ridiculous to me that the children havent even gone back to school and they are starting. Oh and as for any wretched store that plays endless poor quality christmas music I shall turn round and go straight back out and feel sorry for the staff that are subjected to the tinny noise for weeks!

Some of you have clearly embraced the commercial world’s rush to start Christmas half-way through the year.
There used to be twelve days of Christmas festivities, starting on 25th December. It’s now a ‘season’ and lasts three months, finishing on 25th December.
Wouldn’t you enjoy it more if it was a really special day, not 3 months of dusty decorations and spending money?

Nope. I enjoy the 3 month build up.
And Christmas for us lasts until 5 January as well!

We generally go on a resort holiday in late September. As soon as we are back (1st October this year) all the focus will be on Christmas for me!

I have promised myself that even though there may sometimes only be the two of us every effort will be made to make it an occasion.

I never want to turn into a grinch!

MayBee70 Mon 19-Aug-24 17:23:22

My son used to have some Norwegian friends. This is one that they sent him.

MayBee70 Mon 19-Aug-24 17:18:44

That sounds lovely. My nice ones tend to be from Germany.

It’s really difficult to find nice advent calendars these days. I find it sad that children don’t seem to enjoy just looking at pictures since they started putting chocolate in them.I’ve got a box full of advent calendars from before chocolate ones took over that are all glittery and Christmassy. Chocolate ones are a nightmare if you have a dog.

I found some that had little books in every niche, not the most exciting I've ever seen but at least it was different.

RillaofIngleside Mon 19-Aug-24 16:54:47

I agree that it's a pity children don't seem to enjoy pictures any more, we used to look forward to opening our calendars. Chocolate doesn't seem the same to me.
I will start picking up cards soon, but nothing else yet.
