Mayo, love or loathe?

This is a big beef for me. I hate Mayo, the cheap the stuff and the home made better quality stuff, cannot stand it. And of course every cafe/restaurant/sandw outlet, slathers it on my food without even asking if I want it. It is very rarely supplied in sachets or in a separate pot. So of course I always say I don’t want it but more times than I care to mention the food comes back covered in it anyway as if staff in the kitchens cannot help dribbling it on everything regardless.
The number of times I have been made to feel like a fussy/faddy eater I cannot possibly count.
Do they shove Tommy K on food -no.
Do they splash brown sauce on your food - no.
But hey with Mayo it’s dump a bucket load on your food every time.
Rant over.
Deep breaths.
So am I a total freak for feeling like this or do others feel likewise, or love the stuff so much they can eat it from the container like my DH, yuk!
Didn’t post this on ‘food’ because are some serious foodies over there and they might think I’m being silly.

I like Mayo but I ve never had food in a cafe or restaurant ‘slathered in it’ as original post says I always have to ask for it and usually get a couple of sachets or a little pot given me
As for sandwiches it does say on the packet what is in it so just avoid those with mayo in them and don’t tell me there are none I sometimes buy a lunch time sandwich from a nearby Coop and they sell egg mayo and salad with it in but none of the cheese fish or meat sandwiches seem to have it added
Scribbles instead of sending your chips back when they ve already arrived why not say no salt please when ordering I ve never been served pre salted chips just shows how different areas can be

I spread the outside of sandwiches with mayo and then cook in a dry frying pan. Cheese, ham and thinly sliced red onions - fabulous.

I remember my mother in law looking down her nose at her daughter’s boyfriend because he didn’t like mayonnaise and preferred salad cream. She made derogatory comments in his absence and said he was common as muck. His preference for salad cream was the best she could come up with 😆

I like mayo but can imagine it’s quite challenging if you don’t

I generally like mayonnaise but I've stopped ordering chips when eating out because of the way, in so many places, they arrive at your table smothered in salt.
Why? Surely it's not beyond the wit of anyone who likes salt to add their own?
I always send them back and request fresh ones without salt but that's awkward if I'm eating with friends - they've all finished before I get started.
The most inane response I ever got when sending salty chips back was, "Oh. Sorry. Most people like it". For once, I was speechless!

Salad cream? Ulghhh!
Mayonnaise? Gorgeous. I eat far too much of it but it is the food of the Gods for me.
I remember first tasting it on holiday in Spain- it changed my life.
Usually only Helmanns of course!

It is mayonnaise, not mayo; I hate that term.

I read somewhere they spread mayo in shop/cafe bought sandwiches as unlike butter it stops the bread becoming soggy from the filling. For me I love mayo but rarely buy shop bought sarnies.

I’d have thought it was the other way around! I’m sure butter would have more soggy-preventing qualities than mayonnaise! I dare say mayo is cheaper and quicker to use.

The only sandwiches I ever buy are M&S, which IMO are a cut above anyone else’s.

I’m rather fond of Heinz salad cream and make potato salad just the way my Mum made it. New potatoes with the skin on, chopped spring onions and salad cream 😋

If we’re having a family buffet my son in law always makes a request for it.

Babs03 Wed 04-Sept-24 12:59:30

Back in the day was mainly salad cream, but it wasn’t slathered over everything, and sarnies weren’t covered with it. My fav sarnie from back then, though was not shop bought, was corned beef or spam with piccalilli, on a buttered oven bottom - the name for a big rather flat bap made in Lancashire. My old dad loved beetroot sarnies that we called blood butties.

I used to loathe Mayo, now I have a penchant for garlic mayo.

What would concern me are staff who although being told you do not want any mayo, add it anyway. What if you were severely allergic to it? They should do as you ask.

Also doesn't help that tastes change as you get older (either that or they are changing the recipes).

I used to love HP sauce and Heinz tomato sauce! Can't stand them now. I'm VERY partial to Heinz Sweet Chilli sauce, I even Amazon subscribe/saved it. But then that got stopped. Several others tried, yuck!! (I went through lots to find one!) Sainsburys own brand, very nice! Also was in Aldi the other week they had the big bottle Heinz version in stock for £2 each (I bought several.......)

Mayo? Yes, I love it! BUT, not enough to scoff a.big bottle or a.big jar. Before Covid, they used to do the small 200g size, Hellmans and Tesco, but no longer. I can use a 200g jar in days,.but somehow the big bottle stuff I can't it and it.all goes lumpyfied inside!

I'm careful these days regarding sauces, bought a garlic mayo squeasy pot, opened, ate, enjoyed! It was still open a week late, this time I didn't enjoy it as I was On the toilet within minutes. Whatever didn't come out I barfed up a few minutes later. I haven't had an garlic mayo since!

It never ceases to amaze me how the human body knows bad food even if the taste buds dont!smile

I love mayonnaise, I cannot stand BBQ Sauce.

I also like Wilkin & Son’s Brown and Tomato Sauce.

Grannynannywanny Wed 04-Sept-24 12:35:08

I love it, probably a bit too much. I’ve tried the low fat, reduced salt variety but it’s just not the same. When I mentioned that to my daughter she said because I’m only eating occasional small amounts I should just buy the full flavour variety and enjoy it.

I suspect she wouldn’t have said that if she saw the size of the dollop I enjoy 😋

I also love county Mayo 😊

My DD doesn't like mayo either so she tends to avoid pre-packaged sandwiches. We went into a rather snooty, quite pricey cafe recently and there were prawn mayo sandwiches on the menu so she asked if she could have one without mayo. The women serving us replied "Sorry, that's the way it comes". We made our apologies and left.

Presumably their sandwiches came readymade from somewhere, despite the price.

sodapop Wed 04-Sept-24 12:26:51

I dislike mayonnaise as well, they always put such liberal amounts on as well.
I also dislike having ketchup or brown sauce added to a sandwich, if I want that I will ask for it.

Tuaim Wed 04-Sept-24 12:24:41

Not at all. You must eat what suits you. I can eat Hellman's Light mayo but cannot tolerate their Vegan or Seriously Good. They make me feel really quite ill.

crazyH Wed 04-Sept-24 12:20:35

I love mayo on sandwiches, with salad , with everything. If your curry is too hot and spicy, add a tablespoon of mayo, not only does it tone and down, it also gives the curry a lovely creamy feel

I dislike mayo with a passion along with maryrose sauce, even the smell puts me off. Trying to buy a shop bought sandwich is very hard as most have mayo. My idea of hell is a tuna and mayo sandwich.

I usually don’t buy sandwiches, is a nightmare, even a ploughman’s now has Mayo on it which is just wrong, it has to be branston or nothing. So if I am going out anywhere I pack a sarnie and pop it in my bag. Some outlets do sandwiches without mayo but there are very few options and usually without salad or anything else as well.

Georgesgran Wed 04-Sept-24 12:02:16

Horrible stuff!

ferry23 Wed 04-Sept-24 12:00:24

Agree! I have a nasty reaction to yoghurt, sour cream etc. Apparently it's something to do with the culture formed in making it. Harmless but uncomfortable and from the chest up I start to look like a beetroot!

I'm always careful in Indian restaurants and they're usually spot on about ingredients if you ask.

But these days so many things described as cream or creamy, are not cream at all, it's creme fraiche or fromage frais.

And a salad which comes with the dressing already poured over them (unless stated on the menu) is just wrong.

MissInterpreted Wed 04-Sept-24 11:59:07

I love it - but I love most sauces, to be honest. I'd be a very boring old world if we all liked the same things.
