I went to Asdas last week to pick up a script, thought I would have a mooch & buy a few bits (don’t normally shop there), when I got to the tills all the systems were down- cash only! I had the last laugh as I waltzed passed everyone who only had cards.. always take cash, I can keep my eye on what I spend.

Funny that though nearly all the Chinese & fish & chips takeaways only take cash.
During Covid (eat out, to help out) our local restaurant would only take card but wanted tip in cash🙄

I have a little disc on my keyring for trolleys. I can't remember the last time I used cash for anything. Nevertheless, I think places should give the option of accepting cash.

My partner sells his books after giving talks at conventions, etc. He has a card reader, which has resulted in an increase in sales. Before he got the little gadget, some people were put off buying because they didn't have any cash with them, so it works both ways.

I agree with Judy. I want to have the choice.

I like both really. Mostly cards but I always carry cash as well and use it occasionally. Also I keep some cash in the house in case some foreign power hacks into our banking systems so that cards are temporarily unusable.

Using a card would have been ridiculous.

I never carry cash but agree that businesses should offer both. I dont use shops etc which are cash only.

I have £10 in my purse ‘just in case’ which has been there ages. I use my debit card for nearly everything although I often use my cc for online purchases.

I agree shoppers should have a choice but I can’t be bothered to protest. Life’s too short.

It's taking people's choice away and cash is legal tender. Well done for going to the cafe that took cash, I would do the same.

You might get to the till, produce your £20 note and till operator could take a good look at it and hand it back to you saying they cannot take it because it is a forgery, that applies to the 2 examples you give. In fact the probabilities of the two exaamples you give and the one I give are very low indeed.

We cannot live a risk free life, we just have to baance the probabilities and decide whre to take the risk. You could get kncked down and killed by a car as you walk from one cafe to the other.

In my adult life I hav ehad my wallet and all the money in it stolen 5 times. In no case were the cards in my wallet misused. I feel safer using a card.

I had a £10 note refused in my local newsagents. It had come out of an ATM. It turned out it was a forgery. What are the chances?

You did the right thing. Well done. More people need to do this, especially for relatively small amounts.

I have heard that there are rebellions in some countries against organisations insisting they will not take cash, and that they have been forced to give in.

We still need to use cash for certain things eg paying subs for groups and societies, people giving to charity boxes in the street etc and the more it is refused by these big organisations, the more difficult it will become to use it anywhere.

I've also had occasions where my card has been refused as "card not valid" - usually when I've just used it in another shop. If I didn't have an alternative card I'd either have had to pay cash or leave the shopping.

I am Treasurer of our local u3a and many older members (who are in the majority) do not use cards and a few do not even have current accounts. Plenty of them are suspicious of using online shopping or banking. Even our local council does not have online access to its bank accounts!!

I personally think such caution is OTT and technology is now a major part of our lives, so such people are being very short-sighted, but it is their choice.

Guilty of Card use but I tend to use my phone more.
I do take out money for paying a few people who want cash but, hardly carry much around these days. I keep a few pound coins in my car for shopping trollies, even car parks paid via Apps.
I recently bought a new much smaller purse, as I don't need one that holds lots of change.

Even though I use my card a lot I am willing to boycott chains that stop taking cash. Customers should have the choice.

Btw I’ve always got some change in the car, for the trolley etc

Sorry, I prefer using a card - so much easier - most often, I just have my CC in my pocket and my phone. I leave phone in the car when going into the shop.

I do hope you are using a Faraday card protector if your card is in your pocket as it could get cloned when someone passes by you. What would you do if you went into a supermarket with your card, filled up your shopping trolley and then got to the tills and found they had all gone down. You would not have cash to pay for the shopping, you would either have to find an ATM to draw cash out. What a palaver, How many times these last few months have you read about banking systems going down, a lot.

Starbucks are going cashless here in U.K. as from 1/10/24

Just another reason for folks to avoid their premises.

I admit to mainly using my card but agree that cash should be taken. I in fact always carry some cash just in case. These days options are narrowing so that soon everything will be online/on an app.
I would use an app but cant remember my blooming Apple password and it takes all hell to get a new one so have given up with that.
