Washing up shocker

Apparently Americans are shocked by how we Brits wash up -tbh I don’t think is groundbreaking just a lighthearted observation. The thing is they cannot get their heads around the fact that many of us don’t rinse off the soap/suds from our dishes before leaving them to drain, apparently everyone rinses off the dishes before leaving to drain stateside.
Personally I do rinse off the soap before draining but have a grown daughter who doesn’t but she doesn’t drain, she dries the dishes immediately.
So how do you wash up?

Younger people think dishwashing is the best, however they don’t see the water churning around, with the waste food, at a high temperature. They turn their noses up at dishes being scraped and then washed in a bowl. Yuck the water is dirty. If they don’t have a dishwasher they prefer to wash each item under a running hot water tap. I grit my teeth as they know best, of course.
I wash in an bowl and drain.

Labradors do a pretty good job😉 (only joking)

I've never rinsed. Still alive to tell the tale.

Most stuff goes in the dishwasher now but a few aluminium pans from pre dishwasher days have to be hand washed (I'm not throwing good pans away just because they can't go in the dishwasher)

Hand washed items are left to air dry. I was taught at catering college that tea towels were unhygienic as they harbour bacteria. However, most of you dish dryers seem to still be alive so it can't be that critical 😁

I once heard a Gardeners' Question Time programme where one of the audience said she left dirty plates outside and the slugs left them clean of food. Horrified gasps from the rest of the audience😂

She did say that they were then properly washed, but I don't think I'd fancy using them all the same ...

Ye-e-u-k! 🤮 me neither. I’ll stick with the 🧚‍♂️

cookiemonster66 Fri 13-Sept-24 12:13:20

I rinse the plates first to clear food debris, then wash up in hot soapy water, then rinse again before putting on the drainer

I mainly use the dw but on the odd occasion I need to wash up, I use a bowl dedicated for this purpose, minimum amount of dw soap and always rinse. Dry straight away, never drain, cannot stand a drainer full of pots etc!!! I also always use a brush for washing up, never the dishcloth that is used to wipe down surfaces.

I wash and rinse too, but like others, I put most things in the dishwasher. Years ago, I had a dinner service with gold rims that had to be hand washed. I’m glad to say that DD1 has it now. She asked for it and I gave it to her with pleasure. 😉

Nearly all the houses here have dishwashers. Just there when you get a new house . I would say about 80 % except for student and shared places. Doesn’t mean we are all rich by any means !

Boz Fri 13-Sept-24 12:25:33

I only wash what can't go in a dishwasher, which is not much.
Apparently the latest thing is to have two dishwashers side by side. You don't unload, just take from clean - use - stack in spare machine for washing.

sodapop Fri 13-Sept-24 12:27:20

I mainly use the dishwasher but if I do wash anything by hand I always rinse.
I can't bear watching some people when they wash up, no water changed, greasy things in first etc. I have to bite my tongue.

ANMI52 Fri 13-Sept-24 12:28:44

Never rinsed till I lived in Italy where everyone does. Now I couldn’t leave dishes without rinsing , the look of the water in the bowl after a few dishes puts me off! Often use dishwasher though

cornergran Fri 13-Sept-24 12:30:18

Slimline dishwasher deals with most of it. The little that is hand washed (in a bowl) isn’t rinsed. Why? Because my Mum didn’t smile. Still here to tell the tale.

Fae1 Fri 13-Sept-24 12:35:46

Straight from the table to the dishwasher. Any residue after the cycle I'll wash by hand in the sink using washing up liquid then rinse with hot water.

SueDonim Fri 13-Sept-24 12:38:39

Witzend

Nearly all of ours goes in the dishwasher, but a few delicate things do get hand-washed. As I had to explain to a kitchen designer after she tried to tell me I didn’t need a draining board. (I still have the ancient kitchen some years later!)

My son’s kitchen has no draining board. It drives me potty. The one sink is really deep and the worktops are black granite so it’s like peering into a black hole. The dishwasher isn’t that close so if you need to rinse off a plate first there’s no draining board to drain it on and water pools everywhere.

The kitchen was there when they bought the house. It looks to be very expensive quality but imo, it’s a bad design. They’d replace if so many other things didn’t have higher priority.

TwinLolly Fri 13-Sept-24 12:51:01

I tend to rinse off my dishes, plates etc because of the nasty chemicals in dish washing soap that are left behind.

Grantanow Fri 13-Sept-24 12:54:03

If not in the DW then rinsed after washing in the sink.

Tenko Fri 13-Sept-24 12:55:47

I use the dishwasher for most things . If something can’t go in the dishwasher I don’t buy it . I have some long stemmed glasses which I wash up by hand and rinse , but other things I leave to drain or dry straight away . I feel that rinsing wastes water , which is why I don’t rinse before putting in the dishwasher. In fact I read somewhere that with modern dishwashers, you don’t need to rinse .

knspol Fri 13-Sept-24 12:58:59

Always rinse whatever I have to wash by hand, Also rinse before putting things in dishwasher which I've read you shouldn't do, I do it so I can then put dishwasher on shorter, cooler cycle to save money and time.

nexus63 Fri 13-Sept-24 13:01:44

after washing i fill the basin with cold water and rinse all dishes and cutlery.

undines Fri 13-Sept-24 13:06:53

Hey Babs03 I used to think it was cheaper to hand-wash but I listened to a Professor of Domestic Science (apparently they do exist!) who explained why that is not so. So fill up your dishwasher and put your feet up!

mrsgreenfingers56 Fri 13-Sept-24 13:08:02

Dishwasher for me!

dalrymple23 Fri 13-Sept-24 13:30:31

So do Retrievers, GB!!! I joke not! No need to scrape or rinse, no need to soak when food is welded on; pots, pans and plates DW ready!! And they have a varied diet!

I think this originated from one of the FB short videos we see when scrolling ( originated gets likes or comments, and number received provide small income)
So it's a fabricated story for the gullible!!
I have many USA relatives and this is not something even considered about the British !!! Why would they even discuss washing up ,!!!
