Washing up shocker

Apparently Americans are shocked by how we Brits wash up -tbh I don’t think is groundbreaking just a lighthearted observation. The thing is they cannot get their heads around the fact that many of us don’t rinse off the soap/suds from our dishes before leaving them to drain, apparently everyone rinses off the dishes before leaving to drain stateside.
Personally I do rinse off the soap before draining but have a grown daughter who doesn’t but she doesn’t drain, she dries the dishes immediately.
So how do you wash up?

Witzend

Nearly all of ours goes in the dishwasher, but a few delicate things do get hand-washed. As I had to explain to a kitchen designer after she tried to tell me I didn’t need a draining board. (I still have the ancient kitchen some years later!)

My son’s kitchen has no draining board. It drives me potty. The one sink is really deep and the worktops are black granite so it’s like peering into a black hole. The dishwasher isn’t that close so if you need to rinse off a plate first there’s no draining board to drain it on and water pools everywhere.

The kitchen was there when they bought the house. It looks to be very expensive quality but imo, it’s a bad design. They’d replace if so many other things didn’t have higher priority.

Straight from the table to the dishwasher. Any residue after the cycle I'll wash by hand in the sink using washing up liquid then rinse with hot water.

Slimline dishwasher deals with most of it. The little that is hand washed (in a bowl) isn’t rinsed. Why? Because my Mum didn’t smile. Still here to tell the tale.

Never rinsed till I lived in Italy where everyone does. Now I couldn’t leave dishes without rinsing , the look of the water in the bowl after a few dishes puts me off! Often use dishwasher though

I mainly use the dishwasher but if I do wash anything by hand I always rinse.
I can't bear watching some people when they wash up, no water changed, greasy things in first etc. I have to bite my tongue.

Boz Fri 13-Sept-24 12:25:33

I only wash what can't go in a dishwasher, which is not much.
Apparently the latest thing is to have two dishwashers side by side. You don't unload, just take from clean - use - stack in spare machine for washing.

Nearly all the houses here have dishwashers. Just there when you get a new house . I would say about 80 % except for student and shared places. Doesn’t mean we are all rich by any means !

Summerfly Fri 13-Sept-24 12:21:33

I wash and rinse too, but like others, I put most things in the dishwasher. Years ago, I had a dinner service with gold rims that had to be hand washed. I’m glad to say that DD1 has it now. She asked for it and I gave it to her with pleasure. 😉

I mainly use the dw but on the odd occasion I need to wash up, I use a bowl dedicated for this purpose, minimum amount of dw soap and always rinse. Dry straight away, never drain, cannot stand a drainer full of pots etc!!! I also always use a brush for washing up, never the dishcloth that is used to wipe down surfaces.

cookiemonster66 Fri 13-Sept-24 12:13:20

I rinse the plates first to clear food debris, then wash up in hot soapy water, then rinse again before putting on the drainer

Ye-e-u-k! 🤮 me neither. I’ll stick with the 🧚‍♂️

Labradors do a pretty good job😉 (only joking)

I once heard a Gardeners' Question Time programme where one of the audience said she left dirty plates outside and the slugs left them clean of food. Horrified gasps from the rest of the audience😂

She did say that they were then properly washed, but I don't think I'd fancy using them all the same ...

MaizieD Fri 13-Sept-24 11:56:39

I've never rinsed. Still alive to tell the tale.

Most stuff goes in the dishwasher now but a few aluminium pans from pre dishwasher days have to be hand washed (I'm not throwing good pans away just because they can't go in the dishwasher)

Hand washed items are left to air dry. I was taught at catering college that tea towels were unhygienic as they harbour bacteria. However, most of you dish dryers seem to still be alive so it can't be that critical 😁

Younger people think dishwashing is the best, however they don’t see the water churning around, with the waste food, at a high temperature. They turn their noses up at dishes being scraped and then washed in a bowl. Yuck the water is dirty. If they don’t have a dishwasher they prefer to wash each item under a running hot water tap. I grit my teeth as they know best, of course.
I wash in an bowl and drain.

My husband likes hand washing dishes too. It drives me mad, as it's the worst of both worlds - a half full/empty machine and dishes on the drainer 😡.

I have one of those! I just walk away until he has finished, it’s not worth the argument.

Does not rinsing affect the taste of the food eaten from the plates? I have never noticed it.
I think Americans would do better to examine the content of the food they eat rather than criticizing other countries washing-up.

This. Americans on the whole, are huge!

It's surprising how many posters to Gransnet own a dishwasher. Most people can't afford the money or the space for a dishwasher, and yet all people need to keep their dishes free from residues.

I don’t think it’s surprising, as 50% of homes in the UK have one. They only need to be replaced about every 10 years, so they don’t work out as a high cost item over time. I think once people have had a dishwasher, very few would want to go back to washing everything by hand - I know I definitely wouldn’t.

Jaxjacky Fri 13-Sept-24 11:25:42

I inherited my first dishwasher, in situ, when I moved some years ago, when our kitchen was refurbished, we had a new, smaller one fitted. It is cheaper to run than hand washing, plates are never rinsed before they’re stacked in it and it’s run roughly once a week if we haven’t had visitors.

I’ve never had a dishwasher nor would I want one
I find washing up by hand very therapeutic (unlike ironing) 🤓

I use a plastic bowl in the sink so that I can empty really dirt dishes into the sink and the water in the bowl remains comparatively free from gross food leavings. The plastic bowl gets washed inside and out, and so does the sink.

When my carers do the dishes I aim to rinse some dishes after they are out of the house, when I have the energy.

Caleo Fri 13-Sept-24 10:56:56

I rinse hollow ware and cutlery under the tap and then leave to drain. I'd not like to drink from a mug that had traces of detergent. Forks I scrub briefly with a brush .

*Babs03*, I think it has been proved that it is much cheaper, and more ecologically sound, to use a dishwasher than to wash up by hand.

Yes, I believe so.

I think the advice to wash suds off is that there are harmful substances in some of them, but in such minute quantities that you'd have to drink washing up liquid to be harmed by it.

I rinse before using the machine so the filter doesn't get clogged up with bits of food, but I did see an item on TV where an expert said that because of modern sensors that detect how dirty the dishes are, you shouldn't rinse thoroughly before loading, as the machine will be less efficient if you do.
