We have the same thing sometimes. I try to buy enough but all the family are big eaters so quite often we start to run out, both me and my DH know the score, we hold back and let everyone else get stuck in.
But we always have cheese and fruit so we roll out the cheeseboard for afters, the family are too full at this stage but we can fill our stomachs.

Oh yes - Often did it when the kids were young. If I was having a dinner/party for friends, minimum 30 - the husband and children were not allowed to come anywhere near the food . Guests first always 😂

My friend used to use this expression a lot especially years ago when first married and times were hard

In our house this means Family Hold Back and is used when visitors are coming for a meal and there is not enough food. It came to mind today as I've cooked a piece of gammon and it's not as big as I thought it was - and we have visitors for the weekend. So OH and I will have to be careful how much we have.
Can't remember when this started but wondered if anyone else uses it.
Another common teatime saying here is "touch and take" eg if you touch a piece of cake you can't change your mind and have a chocolate biscuit instead!
