Tupperware has gone bust

Remember the Tupperware parties of the 1960s-80s?

I confess that at first I tried to avoid them, but then I saw a friend's child with a lovely toy, a red and blue ball shape with holes you fitted different yellow shapes into and I thought it was such a lovely toy I grabbed the next opportunity to attend a Tupperware party.

I ended up going to 3 or 4 and still have odd pieces in my kitchen.

I kept the ball, I liked it so much and, in their turn, my grandchildren loved playing with it as well, but after that, still as good as new, I gave it to a charity shop. I am not likely to live to see another generation play with it.

But seeing the news about Tupperware in the paper, brought on a big wave of nostalgia.

We don't have any Tupperware left ,because my mother decided that it smelt unpleasant and had yellowed.
It was thrown out of the kitchen , put in the garage and was used for storing nails and screws .
And eventually has disappeared !

Yes, do remember those tupperware parties, and kept several items on-going in my kitchen. A few years ago, one of my SiL's went to a great deal of trouble to track down and purchase an old Tupperware rolling Pin (the type that contains cold water). When I had my kitchen re-done a couple of years ago I treated myself to a new Tupperware cheese container for the fridge. No party thought, just purchased on line.

I loved Tupperware

I attended lots of these parties organised by friends or neighbours. Have to say I went usually because I wanted to support them. Bought lots of things but one thing I did not like. For some reason when I opened a box storing crackers or biscuits there was an off putting smell. I also noticed it when I was told to was told to help myself to biscuits when I was baby sitting. Have always kept those in tins since then.

My memory of Tupperware was when I got talked into holding a party and only my mum and MIL turned up! Unlike an Ann Summers party, it was a full house 😂

So sorry about Tupperware as I grew up with it when it was new and the sensation. Perhaps its demise is due to the fact that their product(s) are virtually indestructible! Some of my pieces are almost as old as I am! (from my mom’s parties)

The one item that I still have intact that is the most useful and enduring part of my kitchen is the set of nested measuring cups - the early ones that have a special kind of rim (not the later generation style, which I have too).

An iconic brand. So many me-too products out there now, cheaper, giveaway, throw away… filling up our landfills, oceans.

I’m trying to get away from plastic as much as I can. It was a good run while it lasted!

The Pippa Dee parties, well they always seemed as if they were a bit "hush, hush" when I was little.

Were they?
Or was it just that I was nosey and it was so rare for my mum to do anything other than family stuff?

I only ever went to a couple of Tupperware parties - oh and a dress party when I was 9 months pregnant. Otherwise I avoided them.Money was tight and I didn't really have the spare cash to spend on things I hadn't planned to buy.

I have a very large square cake box, but as I don’t make many cakes these days, I use it for general storage. At the moment it’s half full of green tomatoes ripening!

I used to ripen them off in a newspaper lined drawer
With a banana 🙂

I tell you what pre dated Pippa Dee Parties...'Salamander' parties, does anyone remember them ?

I’ve been around a good long time but have never heard of Salamander parties. Were they in the UK, or the States?

Me neither.

Tupperware ✔
Avon Cosmetics (the rep said she couldn't do much with me 🤔)
Usborne Books ✔
Pippa Dee went to one once
Ann Summers - once but never again
Someone selling household gadgets but that was in a village hall with a cookery demonstration. Yes, I bought some gadgets!

Perhaps we ought to hold "Swap your Vintage Tupperware" parties. Or at least photo what we still own as a display.

That’s brilliant Allira. I have made a note of it and really must give it a try. It sounds like a quick way to cook rice. Thanks.

Just a thought!

Bear in mind that that rice shouldn't be left in warm heaps as it can develop toxins.

I don't remember ever being ill from it years ago though.

Where do all the lids go, though?
It's a real puzzle.

Same place as all the odd socks, I would imagine! 😂

Seemn on Moneysavingexpert:

The official Tupperware Cookbook says this:
"Cooking Rice in the Multi-server"
1) Fill the outer bowl of the Multi-Server with 1 litre water. Place the water in a pan and bring it to the boil. Add a pinch of salt and 250ml cup white rice and stir. Bring back to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes.
Turn the rice and boiling water into the Multi Server colander in the bowl.
2) Cover and leave undisturbed for 20 minutes.
3) Lift the colander to drain the rice and pour away the starch-filled water.
4) Add 450ml hot water to the bowl, replace the colander of rice to keep hot for serving.
Brown Rice.
Boil for 6 minutes and leave covered in the Multi Server for 30 Minutes.

Yes, that's how I remember using mine, because it was pre-microwave.

Greenfinch Thu 19-Sept-24 16:49:40

I didn’t have a microwave 50 years ago so I wouldn’t have bought it for that. . I don’t know if it is possible to use Tupperware in the microwave.

Allira Thu 19-Sept-24 16:45:15

Thanks Allira I suppose it just drains the cooked rice and keeps it warm. I must start using it 🤣

Are you supposed to use it in the microwave to cook the rice?

Personally, I wouldn't so please check first!

We also had the sorted ball. I still have the green bowl from the lettuce crisper and use it almost daily. Making up the Idaho mash, really useful in the microwave.

I bought this 50 years ago at a Tupperware party and never used it. I can’t remember what it is for . Any thoughts?

Yes, I had one.

Was it a rice steamer? I don't think I've got mine any more.

Greenfinch Thu 19-Sept-24 16:31:06

Interesting! I would never have thought of that. What on earth possessed me to buy it ?
