Unnecessary perfume

This affects me as I have allergies.

For several months I have been buying fresh oranges in netted bags.
It doesnt matter which smkt they are from they always smell of the same manufactured perfume.

Why something like oranges which smell lovely anyway, need this I dont know.

Now today I have withdrawn some money in notes from the bank (well, my hbd actually did the leg work) which overwhelmingly smell of the same scent.

Is this some mistaken idea to kill germs?

It is particularly annoying on the fresh fruit though. Lemons in bags suffer too
Even with washing the scent still remains.
I use a lot of lemon and orange peel in cooking, but obviously I only use loose now.

(FYI all fruit and veg has coatings on them for preservation which can't be washed off, or so I read when trying to get to the bottom of this, but that coating has no smell, so they say).

Oh and I just remembered I bought some vitamin capsules on line which had to be ditched immediately, because they smelt strongly of the same substance the minute I opened the container.

Anyone else noticed this?

I think it must be the nets Oreo
9 times out of 10 if I smell something odd it is on plastic.

The other times, I've been handed something when the other person has used a soap with a strong perfume.

I guess I'm just overly sensitive as Elusivebutterfly pointed out.

Your OT could be our nose on the ground for all strange scents,
For a small fee😄

Oreo Wed 25-Sept-24 15:45:39

😁the plot thickens!
Is it the nets rather than the fruit?

Namsnanny Wed 25-Sept-24 15:39:58

Oreo

I was wondering 🤣
It’s strange isn’t it, as other than a slight plasticcy scent on bin liners have noticed nothing else.I want to hear about what other scents and objects are affecting you.🤔

Well, my H has just bought 4 nets of oranges from Waitrose (we shop according to where we are at the time) and yes they do smell of a sickly scent.
Believe it or not I asked him to get someone handy to sniff them to see if it is me (us) or not.
Of course he forgot to do this.
When I asked if that answer was truthful, he said he quite likes to talk to a few members of staff, and didn't want them to think he was in the early stages of dementia.
Which I can actually understand.
Tbh the scent is faint, and he didn't notice it until the shopping was in the confines of the car.

There is an Asda on the way home so I think I should get some from there to compare.

Call me sherlock's bloodhound.
on the Case of the Scented Blood Orange.🤔😄

For those who, like me, have a problem with black bags, I find that Savers bags are the best.

Nags! No bags not horses.

Since smells became a migraine trigger for me I have found things that no-one else notices set me off. Most black rubbish bags have an awful smell that give me a migraine. Some new clothes have it mildly and it is very unpleasant, though does not trigger a migraine.
If you have allergies you may have a very sensitive sense of smell and notice things that others don't.

Elusivebutterfly I did used to get migraines from smells, but not so much recently.
We have no artificial perfumes in anything at home for that reason.
I agree with your comments about bin liners too.

Shoppinggirl I'd forgotten but I'd noticed the cigarette smell on nags too.

Goodness knows what chemicals they put into making them🤔

NotSpaghetti Sat 21-Sept-24 11:37:45

Some black bin bags smell disgusting- but not all.

shoppinggirl Sat 21-Sept-24 11:17:21

Funny you should say that about black rubbish bags Elusivebutterfly. Every time I put a new one in the bin, I can smell cigarettes -it's so weird. And no, neither of us smoke!

Thank you for your replies.

I promise I wasn't setting you all up, but I did have a chortle at the thought of everyone going around sniffing their fruit bowls👃🍏🍇😄
I hope no one saw you?

I've just asked my H to put his nose 👃directly over the notes which are in an envelope, again and, he said yes a sickly floral scent.

I juiced all the oranges bought yesterday, so I will have to wait to check the next ones
Someone mentioned the packaging might be to blame?

Thank you for the NHS link M0nica

BTW the vitamins were algae in veg capsules delivered in an airtight ziplock bag. As they smelt so sickly floral, I attempted to empty a capsule, and the contents smelt very fishy and unappetising as one might expect.
I initially wondered if the scented smell was added to cover this.

I will in future keep an eye 👀 on my schnozzle👃though, (as long as that doesnt send me cross eyed!) and check if any other items set it off.

So, next time you go to the shops, if you see a slightly mad 🤯 looking woman constantly sniffing her purchases, be assured it is me and I don't need an intervention. 🤣🤣

M0nica Fri 20-Sept-24 19:13:11

What does this scent smell like? Is it floral, citrus, pine? Anyway, why on earth would citrus fruit have any kind of scented product put on them? I know some have wax on them to keep them fresh, but that has been happening for decades, and I cannot see that being scented.

I have just been and smelled the easy peeler oranges in my fruit bowl and they smell - well like oranges - and then the bank notes and vitamin pills............. I went to the cash machine yeterday, my bank notes were odourless and my vitamin pills also arrived yesterday and they again are odourless..

I have never ever bought or smelled in a supermarket, any foodstuff, fresh or manufactures that had any kind of scent on it

I am afraid, I am like others, I think you may be suffering from Phantosmia, namsnanny. www.nhs.uk/conditions/lost-or-changed-sense-smell/

Gotellthebees Fri 20-Sept-24 19:05:37

I'm wondering if it's more to do with the packaging? A lot of netting used to contain fruit and veg is made from plastic, so perhaps the smell is transferring onto the fruit, and you're particularly susceptible. It becomes more puzzling when you're smelling it from vitamin capsules though, so....🤷‍♀️ When washing fruit and veg with peel, if it's not organic I use acv and bicarbonate of soda, then rinse.

BlueBelle Fri 20-Sept-24 18:15:17

I ve never noticed fruit smelling of different perfumes to what I expect are you sure it s not your sniffer Namsnanny

crazyH Fri 20-Sept-24 18:14:55

I’m lazy, so I buy easy peel satsumas. No strange smell noticed. As a matter of fact, I deposit the peels in my Living Room Bin, so that there’s a faint orangey smell in the room.

eazybee Fri 20-Sept-24 18:05:17

Phantosmia, smelling phantom smells that are not there. It goes away in time.

NotSpaghetti Fri 20-Sept-24 18:05:00

I only buy organic oranges and lemons which have fewer allowed "treatments" in the first place.

You could try that.
They won't "keep" as long though.
Mine are bought loose or in nets.

AreWeThereYet Fri 20-Sept-24 16:46:49

I bought a bag of lemons this morning so I just went to have a sniff 😁

Can't say they smell of much, there is a very faint scent which I have to say doesn't smell lemony to me but that may be my faulty snozzle. Although when I cut them I can definitely smell the lemon.

None of my vitamins smell of anything, but that is probably down to who makes them and what they are coated in.

Oreo Fri 20-Sept-24 16:33:50

Haha, so not a faulty schnozz then😄
Let’s see what others say, should be interesting.

MissInterpreted Fri 20-Sept-24 16:32:20

I can't say I've ever noticed unnecessary perfume smells on any products like that.

Namsnanny Fri 20-Sept-24 16:28:43

So the mystery grows🤔

Namsnanny Fri 20-Sept-24 16:27:56

No I dont think it is just me with a faulty snozzle😄.
My husband notices it too.

Oreo Fri 20-Sept-24 16:04:16

No.
Are you sure it isn’t you? It’s possible to smell all sorts of scents that aren’t actually there.
Oranges and lemons just carry the scent of themselves to me, not perfumed in any way.
