Decluttering

It’s that time of year.

Who is looking to get rid of extraneous items and declutter their houses ready for winter and associated upcoming festivals?

I have two boxes of books waiting to be collected on Tuesday, and hope to add a few bags of clothing before they get here. My decorator is coming to do various bits and bobs, and I need to clear the decks ahead of that, which is my motivation for starting now.

I also need to clear out a huge kitchen cupboard which will become a walk-in larder if the carpenter ever gets back to me.

What’s on your declutter list? Record your successes and difficulties on this thread and support one another.

No lectures on why we shouldn’t need to declutter, please? We know grin. Start another thread about people who are disorganised or who shouldn’t buy too much in the first place and we can choose not to engage with it. This one is for support, encouragement and celebration of clearing ‘stuff’ from our lives.

That sounds like great progress, MissA

I have six bags to go to the charity collection grin. I hope to add to them over the weekend. I found old curtains and duvet covers from years ago, and have sorted through coats and clothes that don't fit. Considering how much has gone into the bags there isn't a huge amount of space created, but there must be more than I realise.

I plan to add to them before the collection on Wednesday, and am aiming for ten bags. I feel quite pleased with myself.

My cupboard cleaning halted, as my neighbour took me shopping, so now I've a kitchen full of paint, no more nails, saucepans, tupperware, and shopping. 😬

Your house will be empty at that rate, Doodledog.
We are all making progress, but you're doing brilliantly. smile

I went to a hardware shop to buy something today, saw some double sided tape and thought of you!

grin
My whole flat is a mass of it.
Peel one edge and I think my home would unravel.

MayBee70 Fri 15-Nov-24 21:26:50

I’m a frog tape gal myself…

MissAdventure Fri 15-Nov-24 21:29:19

grin
I haven't tried that.

Perhaps I should get some.

It’s wonderful. A lady in Homebase introduced me to it. I use it to label stuff because you don’t get a sticky residue when you remove it. Great for painting edges as it doesn’t peel the plaster off. Comes in yellow, green and, I think, pink. Someone came round to sell me window glass replacements. We spent ages eulogising about frog tape because his young assistant hadn’t heard about it. I use it to label all of the boxes I’m storing my clutter in. I’ve usually got a bit stuck to my clothing in the way that, when I was a young mother I’d have a nappy pin attached to me.

Today has been a total wash out for me.
I'm just out of bed, and still feel tired. (And grumpy)

MayBee70 Sat 16-Nov-24 22:19:51

I woke up realising I had to go to my sons to look after the kids. The gardeners had cleared away most of the rubbish but I’d cut back more ivy and there were bits of pyracantha lying around. Was going to put it off ( as I do) but it was going to rain so I had a quick clear up. Back from my sons earlier than I thought so, given that the dog is having a sleepover at my partners I’m thinking about doing as much as I can before I get tired. Tempted just to crash out on the sofa.

MissAdventure Sat 16-Nov-24 22:27:25

I'm still painting inside the blasted cupboard of doom.
I swear I'll stick my head in there one day, and disappear clean inside it, never to be seen again.

It doesn't help having my grandson having the audacity to start cooking, in the middle of all the stuff that's out, either.

I think a few more bĺobs of emulsion, a dollop or two extra of no more nails, and it'll be done, though.

You’ve put me to shame. I’m going to get started….

MissAdventure Sat 16-Nov-24 22:56:32

Ah, but I've been in bed all day.
I think I'm turning into a hamster - asleep all day, running around on a wheel that gets me nowhere late at night.

MayBee70 Sat 16-Nov-24 23:08:07

I sat up most of the night and then sleep till early afternoon. When I look at my clutter I just want to curl up and go to sleep.

Your cupboard sounds like Narnia, MissA! When you start refilling it you will have loads of space.

It’s all progress though. I often find that the stage just before I see results is the worst. Stuff everywhere, no end apparently in sight, and wishing I’d never started. Then all of a sudden it falls into place and whoosh! Like dawn after the darkest hour I can see the benefit.

Keep plugging away, everyone. We’ve got about six weeks to get it done 🎄

I don't have access to a car and this makes life so difficult. I have loads of books which need to go to a charity shop, and things which need to be taken to the re-cycling. I have taken good usable clothing to the Salvation Army but still have clothes I hardly ever wear.
It's amazing how many coats I have. My neighbour only seems to possess one coat, but I like variety!

Doodle, my husband collected everything and when he died I couldn't bring myself to sort it, now years later after collecting my own store and realising if I move I have no room to take most of it I have begun. It's liberating, I love the space. A lot of things that could have been sold I donated it to the charities that would be bothered. I've been lucky with jobs and life and I wouldn't have got anything if it was stuck in cupboards and when I die my family wouldn't want it or the bother. Now if it's not useful or pretty it's out. All my clothes I now wear and like. It's very addictive once you start.

I have now got the whole of downstairs sorted, tidied, clean and redecorated. So much easier with much less stuff. That leaves the garage and two rooms upstairs, probably harder than what I have already achieved.

Anglo doorstep collections will pick up donations. They are sold, and some of the proceeds go to a charity of your choice. They don’t take furniture or bedding (well, no duvets) but will take books, clothes and most other items. Look on their website for a list. You book online and they come and get it. You can leave things outside if you’re going to be out when they call.

MissAdventure Sun 17-Nov-24 10:43:23

I think the dratted cupboard is done.
Well, as done as it's ever going to be.

I need to wo4k out how to put the saucepans and stuff back.

I seem to have real difficulty working these things out.

I can't even organise my handbag.

MayBee70 Sun 17-Nov-24 12:29:45

After my disaster with buying plastic storage boxes from a disreputable company I check out the website of the good company; they sell everything you could imagine to store things in. I do miss Wilko’s for that sort of thing. In the end I just went to sleep but I did spend ages trying to work out why my Humax box wasn’t recording anything.

MissAdventure Sun 17-Nov-24 12:47:49

Did you manage to work out why?
Wilco is online now, i think.

My table and chairs came from there, around 40 years ago (?) and they're still going strong.

The best £69 I ever spent!!

MissAdventure Sun 17-Nov-24 14:53:40

Taaaa daaaaa!!!
Just noticed, though, that the paint on the bottom edge needs neatening up.

Doodledog Sun 17-Nov-24 14:57:28

Excellent work, MissA. Aren't we an industrious bunch? We'll be able to hire ourselves out as professional declutterers at this rate😎.

MissAdventure Sun 17-Nov-24 14:58:30

The empty (apart from 2 identical gravy boats) is ready for any tupperware.

Do l need even one gravy boat, considering I don't use them?
