Bucket list.

I decided I would like to do something exhilarating before my time on this earth is done. I ran it past my daughter and we both agreed to do a parachute jump. We looked for a centre near to where we live and read all the info’, but because I have epilepsy (well controlled for over 60yrs) I wouldn’t be allowed. I completely understand their safety measures etc. but I’m still disappointed. It would have been fun.
Just that really.
Have any other grans had the urge to do something they wouldn’t normally try?

I’m not into ‘dangerous sports’ but I always wanted to go on the Orient Express which we did for our silver wedding. Just between Venice & Rome though - by then I didn’t want to give up an en-suite whilst travelling! My husband always wanted to go on Concorde which we did some years before the Orient Express. Travel wise, my biggest wish was to visit Petra & his was the Pyramids. We managed both for his 50th birthday.
My bucket list is full of destinations rather than doing anything too dangerous. Every time I watch Race Across The World (I’ve seen them all), I add a few more. Most recently, Patagonia.

I'm sorry you weren't allowed to do your jump.

I am half way through my bucket list. Nothing very exciting really, just things that I wanted to do. My last thing was visiting the school my mother attended in Wales.

I surprised my family a few years back when I went with them to Disneyland in Florida. I fully expected to be chief bag minder while they all screamed their way round the exciting rides. No, not at all. I went on everything because my GD encouraged me. Loved it all !

I have a bucket list but also a non bucket list. To see orangutans and gorillas in the wild are on my bucket list. Parachuting and bungee jumping are on my non bucket list.

For my 70th birthday, my family clubbed together and gave me a lesson on an HGV - 45 ft artic!! Because of Covid, it didn't happen until I was 72, but it was fabulous and a bit scary at the same time. I came away feeling I had missed my vocation grin

I've done a parachute jump, abseiled, flown in a helicopter and done many other 'adventurous' things over the years, but I would love to visit Istanbul again and see Cappadocia. I would also love to go riding again - I've loved horses ever since I was a toddler but unfortunately my weight wouldn't allow me to do it these days.
Oh, and Whiff, my husband and I competed in car rallies for many years. I once broke my collar bone after our Mini did a triple somersault! I've also gone round a rally course in a car driven by the original Stig from Top Gear, which was a great experience.

Once covid travel restrictions were lifted we decided to get a move on and get on with visiting all the places we have talked about visiting for years. Last year we visited the Galapagos and hiked in both the Andes and the Grand Canyon. This year we’ve been on the Panama Canal, visited Costa Rica and returned yesterday from an incredible trip to Nepal and Bhutan. Last Monday we did the hike up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery in Bhutan.
The only problem is that the more we travel and talk to other people, we keep having more ideas for places to visit. We’re both mid-60s and making the most of our fitness while we have it.

I would have liked to see the northern lights, but not that fussed, these days.

It's all too much effort.

Oh the trip along the Silk route sounds wonderful. Did you watch the very first series of Race Across the World on BBC? That’s the route they took.

I don't like heights either so many typical bucket lists are not for me.
It's our 50th anniversary next year and my husband wants me to decide where to go, I've wondered about sailing to New York then going across America to San Francisco. I really don't like airports much.

a train journey across sounds fabulous CC and you'd get to meet so many different types of Americans.. seeing the Rockies and Death Valley had long been a dream of mine.. and New Mexico..

No bucket list, but I’d like to see Norway and Switzerland.
A small ship cruise sounds lovely, but costs megabucks, alas

Romola Mon 23-Sept-24 12:41:25

My DH was an adventurous "do it anyway" sort of person, and I think he married me because I've been pretty much up for stuff too. We had some great adventures.
I have a blank bucket list, and agree with others about sky-diving, potholing, cruising in a huge ship like a skyscraper.
I did have an idea about sailing on a cargo ship to Australia. But they'd probably say I'm too old at 79

I’d like to spend time in every county of the UK. They are all so different. I’ve been to many but there are lots I haven’t visited. I find our culture and history absolutely fascinating.

Taking redundancy has enabled me to tick off loads on my bucket list ! To dance the salsa at the Rio Carnival, New Orleans Jazz tour, tour Italy and learn to speak Italian ….. a South Sea Island cruise seeing Tahiti, Bora Bora and Hawaii …. And actually today am ticking off another one, going to Niagara Falls ! I know I’ve been so lucky and treasure every moment.

Applegran Mon 23-Sept-24 11:50:40

No bucket list for me though I can see why people have them. I do want a challenge - and am actually taking on one which is making me do lots of thinking and reflection - but am very happy not to do any daring things like parachute jumps!

Some of you have done amazing things.
Imarocker, DIL did Everest basecamp. Her then boyfriend carried on to the top and left a photo of them both.
Crossstitchfan, I too am afraid of heights hence me wanting to challenge myself, but it’s not to be. Like Henetha I don’t think I could manage a mountain anymore, but I’ll have a look at what I could maybe do.

NotAGran55 Sun 22-Sept-24 12:39:37

That’s lovely Crossstitchfan that you faced your fear and have your treasured memories.

Doing the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb was top of my bucket list. I never thought I would ever go to Australia, but met up with our 19 year old son there when he had been travelling for 6 months. It surpassed all my expectations and I’d love to do it again.

That sounds like a wonderful and unforgettable experience! Lucky you!
Not at all as remarkable, but as a person who is terrified of heights, I felt wonderful after my late husband gently persuaded me to go up the Eiffel Tower a few years ago. It turned out to be a moment I will treasure for the rest of my life, especially now that he has died.

I still like a challenge but my ancient bones would let me down now. If I could think of something easy and that I can afford, I would still like to do it.

JackyB Sun 22-Sept-24 10:14:42

I have no desire to do anything like that. I have been on a roller coaster so I know what that's like.

I've done a bit of travelling and, as was discussed in a recent thread, sometimes it's enough to see the places on YouTube or the TV.

I am happy to experience things vicariously through my children and grandchildren.

Imarocker Sun 22-Sept-24 09:46:11

I managed Antarctica last year and that was a lifetime dream come true. I would love to trek to Everest Base Camp but accept that it’s beyond my capabilities now.

In insomniac moments I have been known to compile a mental “bucket list” of things I have never done and frankly have no desire to do - ever! It’s much more fun.
Bungee jumping and pot holing feature, climbing high mountains, cruising on one of those monstrosities the height of an office block, jungles, deserts - and, I’m afraid, parachute jumping!

My ‘non-Bucket list’ would be very much the same as yours!

I climbed mount Sinai in my much younger days, we did it at night with guides lighting the way, too hot during the day, took hours and arrived at dawn to see the sunrise. Spectacular. Now is understandably off limits, so glad we got to do it. Would now love to climb Snowdon or Ben Nevis but my knees and hips aren’t up to it, am ok rambling/walking on flatter terrain or gentle hills but a mountain would floor me.
Would love to write a crime novel though so that would go on my bucket list.

keepingquiet Sun 22-Sept-24 09:16:08

I don't have a bucket list- I don't even have a bucket!

Just one day at a time and enjoying my good health, family and friends.
