I decided I would like to do something exhilarating before my time on this earth is done. I ran it past my daughter and we both agreed to do a parachute jump. We looked for a centre near to where we live and read all the info’, but because I have epilepsy (well controlled for over 60yrs) I wouldn’t be allowed. I completely understand their safety measures etc. but I’m still disappointed. It would have been fun.
Just that really.
Have any other grans had the urge to do something they wouldn’t normally try?

I don't have a Bucket list now but when DH was alive we managed quite a few things we had always wanted to do. We took a train to Cornwall on our 50th wedding anniversary. Whilst there we went to the Eden Project, the Lost gardens of Heligon, St Ives Tate Gallery and stayed at the Egyptian House in Penzance. It was the loveliest time.
He died the following year from cancer.
I didn't believe I would ever enjoy things without him but this year I travelled alone to NZ to stay with DS and family after being invited by my 11 yr old DGS. I had a wonderful month with them, swimming in the sea most days and soaking up the scenery.
Oh yes, there are always things in this world to love.
Fabulous photos from Bhutan Ali Bee

I'd have enjoyed seeing a galapagos tortoise in the flesh.

@Grandmattie I visited Iran once in the 1970s and later in the 1990s after it becamse an Islamic Republic. A fascinating country but sandly rather unsafe to visit with such tensions now in the region.

I also visited Nepal twice (but not the base camp as I am not a hiker) and loved it.

The one place on my bucket list I regret not having visited is the Galapagos islands. I have a thing about reptiles but particularly tortoises, turtles and large lizards like iguanas. Alas they are volcanic islands with not many facilities for disabled tourists and my mobility is poor. I doubt I would stand the flight to Equidor where you change planes (or take a boat).

I was thinking the firewalking was done in Scotland ❤

There must be something wrong with me because I don’t have any great yearnings to do anything. Just reading this thread though I would now rather fancy driving an HGV or tractor. No jumping, caving, leaping or anything dangerous.

Tuaim it was spectacular! We walked in and out of cloud on the way up until the sun burned it off.

How spectacular and what stunning photos! Out of this world! Thank you for sharing them first hand - made my day!

We went to Tromso in Norway last November for a long weekend and we did see the lights, they gave us snow suits it was around -10C, we went self catering because Norway is excruciatingly expensive.

That sounds like a marvellous present. (Not that I'd want to go in it!!)

I have always wanted to see the Northern lights. I never have, despite having been to Canada and Alaska .......... Maybe one day.
In his eighties, the one thing still on my husband's bucket list was to fly a plane. I treated him to a trial lesson at a local airfield. I took him to the airfield in advance, to make sure he was capable of actually climbing into the plane. By this stage he realised what I was up to and he was overjoyed . I paid in advance for the lesson while we were there and booked a four seater so that I could go in the back. We picked a sunny day to actually go up. It exceeded all his expectations. The pilot took off, let him take the controls and only took them back for landing.

In the past ,I've done a lot of travelling and thoroughly enjoyed it .
I still have a bucket list, but would opt for less strenuous more relaxing holidays .

Once covid travel restrictions were lifted we decided to get a move on and get on with visiting all the places we have talked about visiting for years. Last year we visited the Galapagos and hiked in both the Andes and the Grand Canyon. This year we’ve been on the Panama Canal, visited Costa Rica and returned yesterday from an incredible trip to Nepal and Bhutan. Last Monday we did the hike up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery in Bhutan.
The only problem is that the more we travel and talk to other people, we keep having more ideas for places to visit. We’re both mid-60s and making the most of our fitness while we have it.

Nooo! Not the Tiger's Nest monastery in Bhutan. I am reading a lovely book by David Michie called The Secret Mantra which is partially set up there. Glad you are making the most of it as that is one place I would love to go to.

I had always wanted to see the Great Barrier Reef but it never happened and won't now. I can't dive so I guess that the best I could have hoped for was a glass bottomed boat.

You could snorkel, you don't have to dive.

I hope you manage to go one day.

David49 Mon 23-Sept-24 22:13:52

I’ve had a pretty exciting life and for the last 10 yrs adventure travel has been wonderful, now that Travel insurance is becoming an issue it’s time to be less ambitious.

MissAdventure Mon 23-Sept-24 16:58:18

I'd have liked to spend time grooming and making a fuss of tapirs.
