Is everyone having these dreadful storms?

They started yesterday afternoon and have continued. I have honestly not seen so much lightning in my whole life. The sky is pink. We have had hailstones like gob stoppers, crackling lightning almost constantly through the night, rain drops like golf balls. The thunder vibrates so much it is setting off car alarms. It has flooded main roads and feels almost apocalyptic (I must stop watching all those trending films on netflix!)

I'm sorry if there has been another thread about this....I did look

On Monday at the top of our river catchment they had 4 inches of rain but it’s fairly hilly and ran straight off. 15 miles downstream we now have all that water, fields flooded a few minor roads too, no reports of widespread damage.

Here it was a wet day on Monday we probably had around 2 inches spread over all day so the drains were not overwhelmed.

Woke up to pouring rain. Even though the Met Office forecast was saying no more rain for the rest of this week.

That sounds really grim, I hope everybody is safe there.

our house is fine but not everyone's is and loads of roads have flooded and still are, then places that aren't flooded are getting excess water flooding in now. I seems there was just so much rain at once rather than anything else, it just had no chance to drain properly. Loads of roads closed.

Casdon Tue 24-Sept-24 18:01:35

Oh no JaneJudge, I hope your home isn’t affected.

Driving towards my village (no I didn’t take the picture while I was driving!) and the centre of my friends village- she had to move out this morning after being marooned upstairs from yesterday

sad

Oh dear, has your house been flooded? Are you ok?

We have always had extreme weather events, very hot, very cold, very wet and so on, they are certainly reported more often. Usually as the “ hottest for 50 yrs” or “wettest this century”.
So I don’t take too much notice because I’ve seen most before, in 2002 locally we had 6 inches of rain in one day a lot of damage was done.

It is a bit cloudy here in SW Wales but dry
I have two loads of washing on the line. Hopeful it will dry

We had a few periods of heavy rain on Sunday and yesterday with some thunder on Sunday but nothing major. We are in Shropshire and seem to miss most of the extreme weather thankfully.

Our road is unde 6 inches of water today, causing problems for parents dropping children off at the primary school opposite. Neither the school nor the houses are flooded.

When we moved here nearly 30 years ago the last 2 times the village had flooded were 1892 and 1947. Since then it has flooded in 2007, 2009, and annually since about 2020. We have had a lot of new houses built on the flood plain in the last 10 years and roads are now flooding that had never done so before they were built. We are also threatened by a vast reservoir that will flood most of the parish and raise the water table by over a metre. Given that the water table is already very close to the surface, they might as well extend the resrvoir to cover the village.

Us in the North had it all earlier in the year.

Just back from three dull days in Northumberland but no rain. Some downpours here in West Yorkshire today but got the shopping done in the dry sessions.
Feel lucky for once!!

M0nica Mon 23-Sept-24 17:10:35

The puddles are meeting across our road and several others in the village and water is spouting out of manhole covers. Thankfully in my post code the road is several feet lower than the houses, so we stay dry, but elsewhere in the village sandbags are already being put in place outside front doorss

Rain during Saturday night but the thunder & lightning forecast for yesterday didn’t arrive although the sun did! Warm & muggy today, still no ‘weather’ but a spot of drizzle just now. Tomorrow should be fine too. I think we’ve got off lightly in East Devon

We sat in the conservatory and just watched the lightening on Friday afternoon. Torrential rain showers on and off since.

I usually get out the Werthers originals when there’s a thunderstorm. My grand pop used to give me three creamline toffees to suck with the promise that the storm would be gone by the time I’d finished them. He was never wrong.

I'm in Essex, we've had a couple of days of light rain intermittently, but no storms, despite being warned of them.

Mynamestaken Mon 23-Sept-24 14:35:28

I'm on the south coast, Isle of Wight, not had any thunder or heavy rain, a bit through the night but nothing like the yellow weather warning was saying.

RosiesMaw2 Mon 23-Sept-24 14:35:04

Time to get this out?

Hello fellow Bristolian Nightsky!

Hi flappergirl.

Havnt had any rain for a while, despite it being forecast yesterday. South edge of London.

FindingNemo15 Mon 23-Sept-24 13:41:28

I could have written RosiesMaw2 post. I think we must live near each other. I live near all the villages she mentioned. The thunder and lightning was terrible and so much has been affected by the floods.

Tove Mon 23-Sept-24 13:27:27

We had a lot of rain in Hastings but today is sunny. Some occasional lightning but nothing unseasonal, trees are loving the rain though
